This invention relates to a method, a computer program, a computer program product, a system, a sender, a receiver and a session description protocol for transmitting common data from one sender () to a plurality of receivers () within a transmission session, comprising communicating () at least one session parameter, which is related to said transmission of said common data within said transmission session, to said plurality of receivers () via a communication protocol; and transmitting said common data from said sender () to said plurality of receivers () within said transmission session. The invention particularly relates to broadcast/multicast transmission of common data in a wire-bound and/or wireless network, wherein a File Delivery over Unidirectional Transport FLUTE protocol is used.

Conveying parameters for broadcast/multicast sessions via a communication protocol

A system and method for transmitting protected real-time content from one user to another is described. In a first aspect, a user sends a Rights Object to another user. In a second aspect, a user sends a Rights Object to another user via an intermediate server for a multiparty communication. In this second aspect, the users may be able to switch between designated Rights Objects as needed.

The invention relates to the generation of error correction data for available data packets and to the reconstruction of missing data packets based on available data packets and available error correction data. In order to enable an efficient error correction, the data packets are distributed at an encoding end to at least one block of data symbols, each data symbol being of equal size. Then all data symbols of a respective block are used in an encoding operation for forming a respective one of at least one error correction symbol for this block. At a decoding end, received data packets are distributed again to a block of data symbols and missing data packets are reconstructed based on these data symbols and on error correction symbols associated to the block.

A method and system for adaptively controlling level of a receiver buffer in a client in a multimedia streaming network. The multimedia streaming network has a server for providing streaming data to the client. The server is responsible for adapting the transmission rate to the reception rate or congestion control, and for adapting the sampling rate to the transmission rate. Thus, the server manages the shift and keeps it within the rate adaptation operating range. The client is responsible for compensating for the packet transfer delay variation, which is also known as network jitter. The client is also responsible for setting parameters of the server rate adaptation operating range. The client chooses and sends the shift parameters to the server, but it is up to the server to adapt its encoding rate or transmission rate when responding to the parameters.

A method to provide to a sender of RTP packets the actual receiver buffer fullness level in a receiver of the RTP packets at a certain time instant represented as remaining playout duration in time. The receiver sends in an RTCP report the sequence number of a selected RTP packet in the receiver buffer and the time difference between the scheduled playout time of this packet and the current time. Based on this timing information, the sender calculates the amount of time it would take for the receiver buffer to empty if the receiver continues to playout at normal speed and no further RTP packets arrive to the receiver buffer. This receiver buffer fullness level information can be used at the sender to adjust the transmission rate and/or nominal playout rate of the RTP packets in order to maintain a targeted receiver buffer fullness level.

To support a forward error correction scheme, in which a code of the forward error correction scheme is employed at a transmitting end for encoding data for a transmission to a receiving end, the transmitting end compresses at least one binary parity check matrix associated to the employed code of the forward error correction scheme. The transmitting end then provides the compressed binary parity check matrix for a transmission to the receiving end. The receiving end receives the compressed binary parity check matrix and decompresses it for use in a forward error correction based on encoded data received from the transmitting end.

A method for the client in a multimedia streaming network to control the receiver buffer fullness by way of effectively shifting the transmission clock in the server who provides streaming data to the client. In order to avoid buffer underflow or overflow, the client sends a message to the server requesting the shift of the transmission clock either forward or backward depending on whether the client wants to increase or decrease the receiver buffer. Based on the message, the server adjusts the data transmission amount by effectively shifting its transmission clock. The request from the client can be sent through RTCP or RTSP.

Rate adaptation method and device in multimedia streaming

In a multimedia streaming network where a client has a receiver buffer to store a plurality of packets received from a server so as to compensate for the difference between data transmission amount by the server and data usage amount by the client, the server should be able to adapt the data transmission rate based on the status of the receiver buffer. For rate adaptation purposes, server reconstructs a list of packets in the receiver buffer based on information provided by the client. The information signaled to the server is indicative of the next packet to be decoded in the client. The information can be the sequence number of the next packet to be decoded, the DON number of the next NAL unit to be decoded, or the sequence number of the packet carrying the next NAL unit to be decoded and the DON indicative of the decoding order of that next NAL unit.

Buffer level signaling for rate adaptation in multimedia streaming

A method, system, device, and computer code product is disclosed in which a sender transmits data to a plurality of receivers via a point-to-multipoint session. The receiver sends data repair requests to the sender requesting data expected but not received and the sender retransmits the expected but not received data via the point-to-multipoint session. The sender can also schedule point-to-point data repair sessions with individual receivers if the retransmission via the point-to-multipoint session does not correct all errors. The sender can be configured to delay point-to-point repair sessions using a randomization mechanism based on the number of receivers using the point-to-multipoint session.
