Technology described herein is related to work coordination through use of a system B-Tree system. An example method can comprise implementing, by a system comprising a processor, an exclusive lock in a lock domain that identifies a data structure representative of a system B-tree (SBT) of an SBT system, updating, by the system, an SBT generation number associated with the SBT, resulting in a first version of the SBT generation number, executing, by the system, in response to execution of a lock loss call back at the SBT, a comparison of the first version of the SBT generation number with a second version of the SBT generation number to determine a change of version of the SBT generation number, and identifying, by the system, a work assignment associated with the change of version of the SBT generation number.

Cluster-wide visible work coordination system using system B-trees

Technology described herein is related to communication by a system B-Tree system using a lock system. An example method can comprise implementing, by a system comprising a processor, an exclusive lock in a lock domain that identifies a system B-tree (SBT) of an SBT system, updating, by the system, the SBT and incrementing, by the system, an SBT generation number associated with the SBT, and generating, by the system, a notification that requests verification of a change to the lock domain. Another example method can comprise applying a lock in a lock domain associated with a system B-Tree (SBT) of an SBT system, caching generation numbers associated with the lock domain, and verifying the generation numbers relative to one another to determine whether the generation numbers match one another.

The technology described herein is directed towards automating the replacement of a virtual machine when the hardware underlying the virtual machine fails, including in a cloud computing environment in which nodes in a cluster map to virtual machines being deployed within that cloud provider. An automated workflow to perform cluster self-healing is started upon detection of an unrecoverable instance failure of a virtual machine, e.g., because of underlying hardware failure. The failed virtual machine is terminated, and a new, replacement virtual machine that matches characteristics of the failed virtual machine is created to join the cluster. Data of the failed node is re-protected, such as by restoring data maintained with a protection scheme to remaining virtual machines of the cluster. When the data is re-protected and the replacement virtual machine has joined the cluster, the data is rebalanced across the cluster nodes, including to the new virtual machine.

Orchestration of automated virtual machine failure replacement in a node cluster

Actual files, which may comprise objects, are stored from a high-performance cluster storage of a first system to a lower performance storage of a remote second computing system as a backup. A set of proxy files, which point to locations of the actual files within the backup, is created that may be stored to a cluster storage system, or to the lower performance storage, at the remote second computing system. A user, or application, of the first system may access an actual file from the backup that is pointed to in a corresponding proxy file. The actual file accessed from the backup may be stored to a new location at a cluster storage to facilitate future access requests made before the actual file is restored from the backup to the first system. The proxy file corresponding to the accessed file may point to the new location of the retrieved file.

Fast disaster recover from backup storage using smart links

Each node of a storage cluster determines its capabilities and advertises the set of capabilities along with respective capability weights to other nodes of the storage cluster. Nodes monitor their systems for capability changes and, as capabilities of the nodes dynamically change, the dynamic changes to the node capabilities are similarly advertised. The advertised capabilities are passed to a cluster service manager which creates capabilities groups based on the advertised capabilities of the nodes. When a service is deployed to the storage cluster or moved within the cluster, the cluster service manager determines the set of required capabilities associated with the service, and uses the capabilities groups to identify nodes of the storage cluster for implementation of the service. Where more than one node has advertised the required sets of capabilities, the weights are used in an election process to determine which node should be used to implement the service.
