A method of operating a document finishing device is provided. The method includes installing first data relating to physical capabilities of the document finishing device in a document finishing device; connecting the document finishing device to a printer; copying the first data from the document finishing device to the printer; causing the printer to interpret the first data; and causing the printer to adjust its output capabilities based on the first data.

Methods and devices determine the media properties of a sheet of media exiting a printing device. The methods and devices apply the media properties to a predetermined velocity equation to calculate a corresponding sheet exit velocity for the sheet of media that will optimize stack quality in a particular output tray. Then, the methods and devices change process controls sheet movement elements within a media path of the printing device to cause the sheet of media to exit the printing device at the sheet exit velocity.

A method maintains an environment within an interior of a sheet feeder during dead-cycling of an image forming device to which the sheet feeder is operatively connected. The method jets pulses of air into the interior of the sheet feeder that houses two or more pieces of media therein while the image forming device is dead-cycling. Still another feature is a predictive algorithym which is used to increase reliability of printer components by cycling down the printer between jobs in situations where the finishing activity for a current job requires an extraordinarily long time to complete compared with the cycle down/cycle up time of the printer.
