This invention relates generally to treads having a configuration and/or properties for improving or preventing irregular wear on the tread of a tire, and, more specifically, to a tire that has a tread with a gradient of properties that helps to prevent or improve irregular wear, especially suitable for tires that are free rolling such as steer or trailer tires used on trucks.

A method and apparatus for balancing a tire during a retreading operation includes measuring the radial runout the buffed tire casing and applying the gum layer and tread strip to compensate for variances in runout. The gum layer is applied so that an overlap or smear is formed at the relative low portion of the casing. The tread strip is applied with the joint at the same low portion in cases where the low portion has a relatively large variance, or at another location if the variance is small or other low portions exist. In addition, the thickness of the gum layer and tread strip may be controlled for further compensation of the runout variance.

Method and apparatus for balancing tires during retreading

A powder circulating apparatus provides a closed loop system for delivering an absorbent media to an area adjacent a tire at which wearing of the tire surface is occurring, conveying away the absorbent media and those materials absorbed by or entrained with the absorbent media, and recirculating the absorbent media to the tire adjacent area. The apparatus advantageously permits the delivery of the absorbent media from one of a pair of spray locations so as to take advantage of the air flow adjacent the tire due to the direction of the rotation of the tire.
