A method of performing a medical procedure (e.g., a cardiac bypass procedure) on a patient comprises introducing at least one medical instrument into a patient (e.g., percutaneously), conveying control signals from a remote controller to a drive unit, and operating the drive unit in accordance with the control signals to actuate at least one tool respectively located on the medical instrument(s) to transversely secure a first anatomical vessel (e.g., a blood vessel) to a sidewall of a second anatomical vessel (e.g., another blood vessel). In one method, the control signals are conveyed from the remote controller to the drive unit in response to user commands. The user commands may be movements made at a user interface that correspond to movements of the medical instrument(s).

Robotic medical instrument system

A robotic medical system comprises a catheter having an elongated shaft with a plurality of flexible segments spaced apart along the catheter, and a drive unit coupled to the catheter. The catheter may have a plurality of cables respectively terminating at the flexible segments, in which case, the drive unit will be coupled to the plurality of cables. The robotic medical system further comprises a user interface remote from the drive unit and configured for generating at least one command, and an electric controller configured, in response to the command(s), for directing the drive unit to independently bend the flexible segments (e.g., three flexible segments).

Flexible instrument

A robotic medical system comprises a medical instrument assembly having a retainer, a serial array of instruments disposed in the retainer, a chamber, and an instrument driver. The robotic medical system further comprises a user interface configured for generating at least one command signal, a drive unit coupled to the first mechanism, second mechanism, and instrument driver, and an electric controller configured, in response to the command signal(s), for directing the drive unit to linearly displace the array of instruments within the retainer, to displace a selected one of the instruments from the retainer into the chamber, and to distally advance the instrument driver within the chamber to engage the selected instrument.

Interchangeable surgical instrument

A surgical instrument system having an instrument member or shaft with a distal portion positionable through an incision of a patient to an internal site and for operation by a surgeon from outside the patient. A tool is carried at the distal end of the instrument shaft controlled by the surgeon in performing a procedure at an operative site of the patient. At least first and second turnable members are spacedly disposed along the instrument shaft distal portion, both disposed within the internal site, and each controlled from outside the patient for providing at least respective first and second degrees of freedom of control of the tool. The turnable members may be either a pivot joint or a bendable section.

Surgical instrument design

A method of performing a medical procedure on a patient comprises introducing a medical instrument into a patient (e.g., percutaneously), conveying control signals from a remote controller to a drive unit, and operating the drive unit in accordance with the control signals to actuate the tool located on the medical instrument to secure a stent to an anatomical vessel (e.g., a blood vessel, such as an abdominal aorta). The tool may be a sewing tool that is controlled to stitch the stent to the anatomical vessel. In one method, the control signals are conveyed from the remote controller to the drive unit in response to user commands. The user commands may be movements made at a user interface that correspond to movements of the medical instrument.

A medical instrument assembly and robotic medical system are provided. The instrument assembly comprises coaxially disposed shafts, and a mechanically drivable interface to which the proximal ends of the shafts are mounted. The drivable interface has first and second actuating elements configured for independently axially rotating the shafts relative to each other, and a third actuating element configured for deflecting the distal end of one of the shafts. The robotic medical system comprises the instrument assembly, a user interface configured for generating at least one command, and a drive unit coupled to the drivable interface. The robotic medical system further comprises an electrical controller configured, in response to the at least one command, for directing the drive unit to drive the first and second actuating elements to independently axially rotate the shafts relative to each other, and to drive the third actuating element to deflect one of the shafts.

A medical instrument assembly and robotic medical system are provided. The medical instrument assembly comprises an outer probe having an elongated shaft, an inner probe having an elongated shaft, coaxially disposed within the outer probe shaft, and a driver interface module having a plurality of actuating elements configured to be driven by a drive unit to independently effect movement of each of the outer and inner probes within at least one degree-of-freedom. The robotic medical system may comprise the driver interface module, a user interface configured for generating at least one command, a drive unit coupled to the actuating elements, and an electric controller configured, in response to the command(s), for directing the drive unit to drive the actuating elements to independently effect movement of each of the outer and inner probes to the degree(s)-of-freedom.

A medical instrument assembly and robotic medical system are provided. The medical instrument assembly comprises an intravascular catheter having an elongated flexible shaft, and a drivable mechanism to which the flexible catheter shaft is mounted. The drivable mechanism has an actuating element configured for effecting movement of the catheter within at least one degree-of-freedom. The medical instrument assembly further comprises a receiver to which the drivable mechanism is configured for being removably mated. The receiver is configured for operably coupling a drive unit to the actuating element. The robotic medical system comprises the medical instrument assembly, a user interface configured for generating at least one command, a drive unit coupled to the receiver, and an electric controller configured, in response to the command(s), for directing the drive unit to drive the actuating element via the receiver to effect movement of catheter to the degree(s)-of-freedom.

A medical instrument assembly and robotic medical system are provided. The medical instrument comprises an outer probe having an elongated shaft, an inner probe having an elongated shaft coaxially disposed within the outer probe shaft, and actuating elements. The robotic medical system comprises the medical instrument assembly, a support on which the medical instrument assembly is slidably disposed, a user interface configured for generating at least one command, a drive unit coupled to the actuating elements, and an electric controller configured, in response to the command(s), for directing the drive unit to drive the actuating elements to independently effect movement of the outer and inner probes within at least one degree-of-freedom, and to linearly translate the medical instrument assembly along the support.

A medical system comprises a rigid support configured for being affixed relative to a patient table, a carriage assembly configured for being removably mounted to the rigid support, a surgical instrument mounted to the carriage assembly, the surgical instrument carrying a distal tool configured for performing a medical procedure on a patient, and a drive unit configured for being coupled to the surgical instrument to control the movement of the surgical instrument within at least one degree-of-freedom.

Surgical instruments

A medical probe and medical system are provided. The medical probe comprises an elongated shaft, a plurality of electromagnetic elements spaced along the elongated shaft, and a plurality of wires extending through the elongated shaft and configured for energizing the electromagnetic elements that actuate a controlled bending of the elongated shaft. The medical system may comprise the medical probe and a controller configured for energizing the electromagnetic elements via the wires to actuate the controlled bending of the elongated shaft. The medical system may optionally comprise a user interface configured for conveying commands to the controller, in which case, the controller will be configured for energizing the electromagnetic elements via the wires to actuate a controlled bending of the elongated shaft in response to the commands.

An object name system (ONS) for locating one or more servers associated with an Electronic Product Code (EPC) is described. The system utilizes translation format strings to translate an EPC to an EPC domain prefix. The ONS server matches the EPC number to the address of a second server which has extensive information about the product. The second server recognizes the incoming EPC's as belonging to a particular object or service.

Object name system

A robotic medical system comprises an instrument driver having a driver shaft, a driver cable slidably disposed through the shaft, and a driver coupling member respectively mounted to the driver cable, and an instrument having an instrument shaft, an end effector, an instrument cable slidably disposed through the shaft for actuating the end effector, and an instrument coupling member mounted to the instrument cable. The robotic medical system further comprises a storage chamber having a passage that stores the instrument, a drive unit coupled to the instrument driver, and an electric controller configured for directing the drive unit to distally advance the instrument driver within the passage of the storage chamber and engage the driver coupling member and instrument coupling member, and for directing the drive unit to proximally retract the instrument driver within the passage of the storage chamber and disengage the driver coupling member and instrument coupling member.
