An autonomous biobuoy system and methods for detecting characteristics of a marine environment, the system involving: a light source comprising a blue light emitting diode; a detector assembly for detecting the at least one characteristic of the marine environment, the detector assembly having a single photodiode configured to detect stimulated bioluminescence and transmissivity in response to the light source, the detector assembly configured to generate at least one detector assembly output signal responsive to at least one detected characteristic; and a transmitter coupled with the detector assembly for transmitting the at least one detector assembly output signal.

Autonomous biobuoy systems and methods

A system for testing the toxicity of a test sample comprising: an aqueous suspension of dinoflagellates; a test chamber configured to contain the aqueous suspension of dinoflagellates and the test sample; an optical signal generator configured to emit an excitation signal for exciting the dinoflagellates to emit a fluorescence signal if the dinoflagellates are alive; a first optical transducer configured to produce a first data signal in response to detecting the fluorescence signal; a stimulator configured to introduce a gas into the aqueous suspension for stimulating the dinoflagellates to emit a bioluminescence signal if the dinoflagellates are alive; a second optical transducer configured to produce a second data signal in response to detecting the bioluminescence signal; and a processor configured to compare the first data signal and the second data signal to a control data to generate an output representing the toxicity of the test sample.

Portable profiler for profiling a marine biosphere and method of assembling the profiler

A system for measuring toxicity levels of a solution includes a water proof sample container transparent to visible light which holds an aqueous test solution containing bioluminescent organisms. A light tight chamber has a cavity which holds the sample container and includes a light port. A stress generating system positioned in the sample container generates pressure pulses which stimulate the organisms to generate light emissions. A light detector system mounted to the light tight chamber in a light tight manner detects light emissions generated in the sample container which propagate through the light port and are received by the light detector system. The light detector system generates an electric pulse in response to detecting each detected light emission. A controller enables the stress generating system and the light detector system, and then counts the electric pulses within a predetermined period of time. The system may further include a fiber optic bundle for propagating light from the light port to the photodetector element in the light detector system, and an optical attenuator supervised by the controller to limit the intensity of light irradiating the photodetector within the linear response range of the element, and to prevent ambient light from saturating and damaging the photodetector.

A bioluminescent detector is disclosed for detecting and measuring in situ bioluminescence generated by marine microorganisms. The detector includes a laminar flow chamber, a turbulent flow chamber in fluid communication with the laminar flow chamber, and a photon detector network positioned with the turbulent flow chamber. The detector is dropped over the side of a ship which may be underway and sinks at constant velocity. As the detector descends, ocean water flows through the laminar flow chamber and then into the turbulent flow chamber where fluid turbulence subjects any bioluminescent organisms present to shear stress, causing them to generate photons that are detected by the photon detector network.

Bioluminescent detector

A test chamber is disclosed for determining the bioluminescent signatures of planktonic organisms in which a light tight chamber has at least one light port, and preferably two light ports, where photomultiplier tubes are connected to the test chamber for detecting and measuring the flash kinetics of marine organisms. A door is pivotally mounted on the light tight chamber for permitting insertion and withdrawal of an organism sample holder. A vacuum tube is connected to the test chamber and to the sample holder via a passageway such that the organism can be excited by means of drawing off the fluid containing the organism. The bioluminescent characteristics of the organisms in the sample holder can then be detected and measured by means of the photomultiplier tubes. Preferably, a third port is provided on the test chamber where, alternatively, a third multiplier tube may be connected, or one of the two photomultiplier tubes can be connected with a different orientation with respect to the sample holder, or a light tight diaphragm may be placed across the third light port such that chemical irritants may be injected into the sample holder by means of a syringe through the light tight diaphragm without permitting the entry of light into the test chamber. The outputs of the photomultiplier tubes may be used to measure the instantaneous intensity of the bioluminescent flashes of the organisms. The collected data may be recorded to help identify which organisms are responsible for the measured bioluminescence in the surface waters of the worlds oceans.
