An embodiment provides a method for measuring a component of an aqueous sample using square wave modulation, including: introducing the aqueous sample to a chamber of a square wave modulation apparatus; applying a stimulus voltage step to the aqueous sample, wherein the stimulus voltage comprises a staircase voltage, wherein each step of the staircase voltage defines a group, wherein the group comprises one or more square wave modulation cycles; adjusting a time acquisition window, wherein the time acquisition window is a portion of each of the half cycle of the stimulus voltage; measuring a resultant current output resulting from the stimulus voltage within the time acquisition windows; and averaging the resultant current output across at least one or more cycles of each group. A method for constructing a frequency profile of an emitted signal suitable for use in a non-contact ranging system with multi-scale spectral analysis includes determining N stepped frequency chirps, wherein each frequency chirp of the N stepped frequency chirps has a linear FM modulation of predetermined bandwidth and slope, and wherein a starting frequency for each of the plurality of stepped frequency chirps is chosen so that a non-linear step profile is created which extends over a predetermined total bandwidth, sorting the plurality of N stepped frequency chirps into P sub-sequences, where P is equal to the product of decimation factors to be used in the multi-scale spectral analysis, and ordering the P sub-sequences end to end in time.

A fluid quantification instrument is provided according to the invention. The fluid quantification instrument includes one or more sensor probes and meter electronics in communication with the one or more sensor probes. The meter electronics are configured to receive one or more raw fluid measurements from the one or more sensor probes, process the one or more raw fluid measurements using a predictive system model to produce one or more optimized fluid measurements, and determine one or more fluid quantifications using at least the one or more optimized fluid measurements.

A fluid flow measurement instrument is provided. The measurement instrument includes a sensor producing a time domain signal representative of reflections of an emitted signal; and a meter being coupled to the sensor and configured to: receive the time domain signal; create two or more spectral estimates for the time domain signal, wherein said two or more spectral estimates have different frequency ranges and resolutions; determine a frequency offset value using one or more of the two or more spectral estimates; and convert the frequency offset value into a fluid velocity.
