An integrated activation system for an implantable medical device (IMD) sharing a power source, the activation system comprising a switching circuit having first and second inputs and having an output coupled to the acute use device, a gating element coupled to the first input and configured to gate power from the power source to the switching circuit, and a sensing element coupled to the second input of the switching circuit. The sensing element is configured to sense an activation condition, enable an operation interval of the switching circuit, and transmit a signal to the switching circuit during the activation condition. The switching circuit is configured to transmit power to the acute use device upon receipt of a pre-determined number of signals from the sensing element.

System and apparatus for controlled activation of acute use medical devices

An implantable neurostimulator device for implantation in a head of a patient includes a housing adapted to be implanted beneath a patient's scalp, and a cardiac monitoring element, a brain monitoring element, and a processor. The processor is configured to receive a cardiac signal from the cardiac monitoring element, identify cardiac events in the cardiac signal, receive a brain signal from the brain monitoring element, identify neurological events in the brain signal, and indicate a relationship between the neurological events and the cardiac events.

System and method for monitoring or treating nervous system disorders

A medical device system includes a housing, the housing at least partially supporting a therapy module and a processor, and a respiratory monitoring element coupled to the processor. The processor is configured to activate the therapy module upon detection of a respiratory event in a respiratory signal. In some embodiments, the system may further comprise a brain monitoring element, and the processor may be configured to monitor a brain signal and change the therapeutic output based upon the brain signal.

System and method for regulating cardiopulmonary triggered therapy to the brain

A system for communicating with a medical device implanted in an ambulatory patient and for locating the patient in order to selectively monitor device function, alter device operating parameters and modes and provide emergency assistance to and communications with a patient. The implanted device includes a telemetry transceiver for communicating data and operating instructions between the implanted device and an external patient communications control device that is either worn by or located in proximity to the patient within the implanted device tranceiving range. The control device preferably includes a communication link with a remote medical support network, a global positioning satellite receiver for receiving positioning data identifying the global position of the control device, and a patient activated link for permitting patient initiated personal communication with the medical support network. A system controller in the control device controls data and voice communications for selectively transmitting patient initiated personal communications and global positioning data to the medical support network, for initiating telemetry out of data and operating commands from the implanted device and transmission of the same to the medical support network, and for receiving and initiating re-programming of the implanted device operating modes and parameters in response to instructions received from the medical support network. The communications link between the medical support network and the patient communications control device may comprise a world wide satellite network, hard-wired telephone network, a cellular telephone network or other personal communications system. Methods and apparatae are also described that enhance the ability of the medical system to find patients and to get reports on patient and medical device status, and even update medical device programming using such facilities, and others described in detail within.

World wide patient location and data telemetry system for implantable medical devices

Subcutaneous Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (SubQ ICDs) are disclosed that are entirely implantable subcutaneously with minimal surgical intrusion into the body of the patient and provide distributed cardioversion-defibrillation sense and stimulation electrodes for delivery of cardioversion-defibrillation shock and pacing therapies across the heart when necessary. The SubQ ICD is implemented with other implantable and external medical devices and communicates to provide drugs and therapy in a coordinated and synergistic manner.

A method and apparatus for determining vulnerable plaque in a cardiovascular lumen is disclosed. In one embodiment, a guide member comprising a temperature sensor and a distance sensor are inserted into the cardiovascular lumen. The temperature of the cardiovascular wall is measured with the temperature sensor, and the distance from the temperature sensor to the cardiovascular wall is determined. The cardiovascular wall temperature is adjusted based on the distance determination, and the vulnerable plaque is determined based on the adjusted wall temperature measurement.

A device to determine the level of a substance of interest in a patient's body and provide a therapeutic amount of medicament is disclosed. The level of a substance of interest in the patient's body is determined by iontopheretically sampling the patient's blood and then analyzing the resulting sample to determine the level of the substance of interest. The information about the level of a substance of interest is transmitted to an implanted drug pump in the patient's body. In the preferred embodiment, the substance of interest sensor is an external sensor applied to the user's skin.;: In an alternate embodiment, the sensor may be implanted. The preferred method of transmitting information about the level of a substance of interest determined by the sensor is transmitted to an implanted drug pump in the patient's body is via a so called 'body bus'. The 'body bus' is a telemetry system where the patient's own body provides the interconnection between the iontopheretic device and the implanted drug pump.

The voice controlled system of the present invention permits hands-free interactive control of a medical data processing instrument that interfaces with an implanted medical device. In an example embodiment, the system includes a microphone and a speech recognition circuit coupled to the microphone and adapted to recognize an audio signal from the microphone. The audio signal corresponds to one of a subset of commands from a set of commands and each command corresponds to a task to be performed on the implanted medical device. The speech recognition circuit is further adapted to convert the audio signal into a selection code and match the selection code to one of the subset of commands. The system further includes a display device and a processor arrangement coupled to the speech recognition circuit and to the display device. The processor arrangement is configured to receive data indicative of an implanted medical device state and select the subset of commands as a function of the device state. The processor arrangement is also configured to display the device state data and the subset of commands and generate a control signal in response to the selection code match. The system also includes a medical data processing instrument coupled to the processor arrangement that is adapted to, in response to the control signal, execute the one of the subset of commands and to display data generated in response to execution of the one of the subset of commands.

Automatic voice and data recognition for implanted medical device instrument systems

Apparatus and method for managing chronic home care of patients with one or more implanted medical devices (IMDs) includes a mobile portable device for use by a visiting nurse. Specifically, the portable device integrates various systems to enable the nurse to schedule her day and get directions to a first and subsequent visit destination via a GPS system or equivalent. The portable device includes an identification system including a security protocol to identify the nurse/home health care provider. Additionally, the portable device incorporates a communication system such as a cellular phone that would enable the nurse to connect to other clinical support personnel such as a doctor or a specialist. The portable device further includes a wireless communication system that enables communication between the portable device and one or more IMDs in a patient. Upon arrival at the patient's home, the nurse may download data from the one or more IMDs directly into the portable device. This data could in turn be downloaded immediately or later to a remote viewing center via conventional data transmission systems. Other medical data such as blood pressure measurements and vital physiologic signals may be entered into the portable device using a digitizer pen, voice input or equivalent. Similar to the IMD data, this medical data could be transmitted to the remote location from the portable device.

Portable extender for data transmission within a medical device communication system

An automated identification and configuration system for use with an implantable medical device (IMD) is disclosed. The system includes a first communication circuit that is attached to, or otherwise carried by, a detachable component associated with the IMD such as a medical lead. The communication circuit stores data such as model numbers, serial numbers, technical data, and/or calibration information that describes the additional component. This information may be transferred by the first communications circuit to a second communications circuit that is external to the additional component. This transferred data can be used to automatically configure the internal circuitry and connection functions of the IMD to properly interface with, and support, the additional component. For example, the data can be used to automatically adjust amplifier gains or other sensor circuitry, or to configure a connector block to properly couple to the component. The data may further be entered into a patient record on an external programmer, or may be transferred to a central storage location to be generally accessible to health care providers. In one embodiment, the first communication circuit is a passive RF transponder. This first communication circuit may include a receiver as well as a transmitter to allow the circuit to programmably receive data at the time of component manufacture.

Method and apparatus for automatic implantable medical lead recognition and configuration

The invention is directed to a programmer for communication with different medical devices that utilize different telemetry communication techniques. The programmer receives telemetry signals from a given medical device, and selects an appropriate communication mode, which can be pre-programmed into the programmer as one of a plurality of possible communication modes. The programmer can configure itself for communication with a given medical device based on the telemetry signal it receives. Specifically the programmer is implemented as a software based, power efficient receiver/transmitter based upon an inexpensive, simple motor-controller DSP.

A patient monitoring system in cooperation with IMDs provides information, direction and counseling to patients. Specifically, a combination of lifestyle parameters, such as, for example, diet, exercise, weight, medication and environmental factors such as, for example, temperature, UV factor, pollen count, humidity, air pollution index, are integrated to provide a seamless, comprehensive, chronic monitoring system and support for patients. The system includes a home monitor, IMD, and a remote expert station in operable data communications therebetween. Personal data such as weight, environmental data, food data from refrigerators and pantry, type of exercise equipment, medication, physiologically significant events, physician treatment plan and the like are integrated with IMD data to provide continuous patient care, counseling, consultation and notification. The remote expert station enables doctors and other health care providers to review, monitor current and long-term trends of the patient's health status and dispense clinical care as needed.
