Identification of aromatic interactions, e.g. π-interactions, of mesophase formation, and methods related thereto, including the use of fluorescent light and optical imaging and/or detection schemes for the identification of π-interactions of mesophase formation, and methods related thereto. Methods include interacting fluorescent light with a pitch composition; receiving fluorescent light emissions from the pitch composition; and detecting the onset of mesophase formation upon detecting a normalized fluorescence intensity (I/I) of the fluorescent light emissions in the range of about 0.4 to about 0.7 at a wavelength in the range of about 430 nm to about 470 nm for an exposure of about 1.5 seconds.

Downhole tool is provided that includes a body, an intake port for receiving fluid from external the body, a pump, a filtration device, and an exit port. The pump is in fluid communication with the intake port for withdrawing fluid through the intake port. The filtration device has a particulate removing filter, and a flow line extending from the intake port to the filtration device. The filtration device is contained within the body and is in fluid communication with the intake port. The present application relates sensing reactive components in fluids by monitoring band gap changes to a material having interacted with the reactive components via physisorption and/or chemisorption. In some embodiments, the sensors of the present disclosure include the material as a reactive surface on a substrate. The band gap changes may be detected by measuring conductance changes and/or spectroscopic changes. In some instances, the sensing may occur downhole during one or more wellbore operations like drilling, hydraulic fracturing, and producing hydrocarbons.

A model can be trained for discriminant analysis for substance classification and/or measuring calibration. One method includes interacting at least one sensor with one or more known substances, each sensor element being configured to detect a characteristic of the one or more known substances, generating an sensor response from each sensor element corresponding to each known substance, wherein each known substance corresponds to a known response stored in a database, and training a neural network to provide a discriminant analysis classification model for an unknown substance, the neural network using each sensor response as inputs and one or more substance types as outputs, and the outputs corresponding to the one or more known substances.

The embodiments herein relate to formation testers having reactive filter materials for detecting analytes in subterranean formation operations. The formation include a body having an outlet, a probe extendable from the body and having a sealing pad and a probe snorkel tube, a flow line within the body, wherein the flow line has an entry end connectable to the probe snorkel tube and an exit end connectable to the outlet in the body, a sample chamber fluidically connectable to the flow line downstream of the entry end of the flow line, and a reactive filter material in the flow line. The reactive filter material sorbs an analyte in a wellbore fluid.

A design of an integrated computational element (ICE) includes specification of a substrate and a plurality of layers, their respective constitutive materials, target thicknesses and refractive indices, where refractive indices of respective materials of adjacent layers are different from each other, and a notional ICE fabricated in accordance with the ICE design is related to a characteristic of a sample. One or more layers of the plurality of layers of an ICE are formed based on the ICE design, such that the formed layer(s) includes(e) corresponding material(s) from among the specified constitutive materials of the ICE. Characteristics of probe-light interacted with the formed layer(s) are measured at two or more temperatures. Temperature dependence(ies) of one or more refractive indices of the corresponding material(s) of the formed layers is(are) determined using the measured characteristics. The received ICE design is updated based on the determined temperature dependence(ies) of the refractive index(ices).

Determining temperature dependence of complex refractive indices of layer materials during fabrication of integrated computational elements

Systems and methods are provided to allow for characterization of feeds, intermediate effluents, and/or products during lubricant base stock production. More generally, the systems and methods can allow for characterization of aromatics in various types of hydroprocessed intermediate effluents and/or products. In some aspects, the characterization can include measuring a fluorescence excitation-emission matrix spectrum for a sample, and then generating a representation of the spectrum by fitting the measured spectrum to a linear combination of spectra corresponding to compounds or compound classes. As the hydroprocessing process continues, additional measured spectra and comparing the fit quality of the representation to the subsequently measured spectra. When the fit quality falls below a threshold value, the loss in fit quality indicates a change in the number and/or distribution of aromatics in the sample. In other aspects, fluorescence excitation-emission spectroscopy can be used to characterize the amount of aromatics within a sample that correspond to one or more fluorescence compound classes. Based on this characterization, adjustments can be made to a process to reduce undesirable levels of aromatics, such as undesirable levels of polynuclear aromatics.

Monitoring of hydroprocessed fluids by optical spectroscopy

Methods and systems for using a cooling apparatus comprising an elastocaloric material to reduce the temperature of downhole packages in a subterranean formation are provided herein. In one or more embodiments, the methods of the present disclosure comprise: disposing a downhole package in a wellbore penetrating a portion of a subterranean formation; and disposing a cooling apparatus comprising an elastocaloric material and at least one actuator downhole in the wellbore, wherein the cooling apparatus is adjacent to the downhole package. In one or more embodiments, the systems of the present disclosure comprise: a downhole package having a temperature; and a cooling apparatus coupled to the downhole package, wherein the cooling apparatus comprises an elastocaloric material coupled to at least one actuator, wherein the cooling apparatus is configured to reduce the temperature of the downhole package.
