The invention relates to a coating composition demonstrating improved adhesion and method for improving adhesion of a coating composition to metal. The coating and method of the invention provide improved adhesion of a coating when coating is applied directly over metal substrates, especially untreated metal substrates such as galvanized steel, unsanded aluminum and unsanded cold-rolled steel. More particularly, the invention provides a composition comprising (I) an effective amount of a first compound having an acid number of from 70 to 120 mg KOH/g, a hydroxyl number of from 200 to 400 mg KOH/g, a number average molecular weight of from 300 to 700, and which is the reaction product of (a) at least one difunctional carboxylic acid, (b) at least one trifunctional polyol, (c) at least one chain stopper, and (d) phosphoric acid, (II) an effective amount of a second compound comprising a carboxy phosphate ester having the formula:wherein R is an C-Caliphatic group in which one or more aliphatic carbon atoms are substituted with lateral or terminal &#x2014;COORgroups, wherein Ris H, metal, ammonium, C-Calkyl, or C-Caryl, M is hydrogen, metal or ammonium and x is a number from 0 to 3, and (III) a compound providing low surface tension and promoting surface wetting of a substrate.

Coating composition with improved adhesion and method therefor

The present invention provides a method for coating bare, untreated metal substrates wherein a coating composition comprising one or more particularly defined additives is applied directly to a bare metal substrate which has not been chemically and/or mechanically altered. The invention provides a method of coating a bare untreated metal substrate. The method requires the steps of (i) providing a bare, untreated metal substrate, the substrate being substantially free of mechanical and/or chemical alterations, (ii) applying a two-component urethane coating composition directly to the bare, untreated metal substrate so as to make a coated metal substrate, and (iii) sanding at least a portion of the coated metal substrate within one hour from the time the two-component urethane coating composition was applied to the bare, untreated metal substrate. The resulting coated metal substrate has an initial adhesion loss of less than 20% as measured by a cross hatch adhesion test per ASTM D-3359 93. The invention further provides a method of refinishing a previously coated substrate. This method requires (i) providing a substrate having thereon a previously applied and cured coating film, (ii) removing substantially all of the previously applied and cured coating film from at least a portion of the substrate so as to make a bare metal substrate substantially free of mechanical and/or chemical alterations, (iii) applying a two-component urethane coating composition directly to the bare, untreated metal substrate so as to make a coated metal substrate, and (iv) sanding at least a portion of the coated metal substrate within one hour from the time the two-component urethane coating composition was applied to the bare, untreated metal substrate, wherein the coated metal substrate has an initial adhesion loss of less than 20% as measured by a cross hatch adhesion test per ASTM D-3359 93.

Method of coating bare, untreated metal substrates

A solvent borne coating composition comprising a resin, a polyether modified dimethylpolysiloxane, and parachlorobenzotrifluoride.

Coating containing adhesion promoting additive

A gravity driven steerable vehicle having wheels, or skis or a combination of wheels and skis for recreational use, most particularly on surfaces such as pavement, artificial hard-pack turf, mountain slopes, dirt roads, grass and hard-packed or non-packed snow. The vehicle has at least three (3) but preferably four (4) wheels, or skis or a combination of wheels and skis which may or may not be on independent axles one from the other and which may or may not be each independently shock suspended. There is also a steering mechanism for steering the vehicle and a driver compartment portion for containing a driver of the vehicle in a prone face-down and face-forward position. The vehicle is steerable by the driver from the prone face-down and face-forward position. The mechanism for suspension of the wheels and/or skis is configured to provide precise control in turns especially the carving of turns, by the skis, while descending on snow covered terrain. The attitude of the skis relative to the snow surface changes upon initiation of a turn and while in the turn to increase the edgeing of the skis thereby enhancing the turning characteristics of the vehicle. The vehicle may further have a braking system for slowing or stopping the vehicle and a harness apparatus for harnessing the driver onto and into the vehicle.

Gravity driven steerable vehicle

The invention provides a coating composition for use with metallic substrates that provides a unique balance of required properties. In particular, the coating composition of the invention simultaneously provides desirable levels of adhesion to metal, sandability without the production of harmful dust, corrosion resistance, and recoatability. The coating composition of the invention comprises a polyurethane or epoxy/amine film-forming component, and a corrosion protection component consisting of aluminum selected from the group consisting of nonleafing aluminum pigments, the corrosion protection component being present in the composition in an amount effective to prevent corrosion of the substrate. A cured film of the coating applied to a steel substrate has a pass rating after 480 hours in salt spray per ASTM B117.

Coating composition for metallic substrates

The invention further provides a method of refinishing a previously coated substrate by a first step of removing substantially all of the previously applied and cured coating film so as to make a bare metal substrate substantially free of mechanical and/or chemical alterations.

Coating compositions having improved direct to metal adhesion

There is disclosed a metallic and nonmetallic water borne base coat compositions exhibiting excellent appearance. A method for long term stability and the introduction of aluminum flake pigments into a water borne coating is also disclosed. The method is based on storing the aluminum flake in a solvent environment with introduction of the aluminum flake in to the aqueous environment just before appling the base coat coating. A water reducible acrylic resin with nonionic and acid functionality derived from vinyl monomers having nonionic and urethane functionality has been disclosed that allows for direct introduction of aluminum flake in to an aqueous environment. The coating vehicle is based on acrylic latex vehicle which exhibits excellent drying and film properties. The rheology control agent employed allows for a wetter application of the coating to the substrate. The coating compositions disclosed are also in compliance with current and proposed volatile organic compound regulations.
