The disclosure is directed to a chemically strengthened glass having antimicrobial properties and to a method of making such glass. In particular, the disclosure is directed to a chemically strengthened glass with antimicrobial properties and with a low surface energy coating on the glass that does not interfere with the antimicrobial properties of the glass. The antimicrobial has an Ag ion concentration on the surface in the range of greater than zero to 0.047 &#x3bc;g/cm. The glass has particular applications as antimicrobial shelving, table tops and other applications in hospitals, laboratories and other institutions handling biological substances, where color in the glass is not a consideration.

Coated, antimicrobial, chemically strengthened glass and method of making

A photochromic glass that includes a base glass and a photochromic agent is described. The base glass is a modified boroaluminosilicate glass and the photochromic agent is a nanocrystalline cuprous halide phase. The photochromic glass exhibits a sharp cutoff in the UV or short wavelength visible portion of the spectrum along with an absorption band at longer wavelengths in the visible. The nanocrystalline cuprous halide phase includes Cu, which provides states within the bandgap of the cuprous halide that permit the glass to absorb visible light. Absorption of visible light drives a photochromic transition without compromising the sharp cutoff. The nanocrystalline cuprous halide phase may optionally include Ag.

A 3-D glass enclosure comprises a generally planar glass base member, an encircling glass side wall member connected to the base member, and a generally planar glass cover member connected to the side wall member to form a unitary glass enclosure, the base, sidewall and cover members being made by reforming softened glass sheet preforms and subjecting the reformed members to ion-exchange strengthening, thus providing strong transparent enclosures for electronic devices such as tablet computers, cellphones, media players and televisions.

A method for managing the use of flow-through monolithic sorbents for the sorption of a trace contaminant from a fluid stream, which comprises: providing two or more flow-through monolithic sorbents having a trace contaminant sorbed thereon, wherein the flow-through monolithic sorbents are positioned in an initial series to allow for passing a fluid stream from an upstream inlet end of the series to a downstream outlet end of the series; removing an inlet end portion of the flow-through monolithic sorbents from the inlet end position of the series; moving a downstream portion of the flow-through monolithic sorbents from a downstream position in the series to the inlet end position of the series; and placing a replacement flow-through monolithic sorbent portion in a downstream position of the series.

The present invention describes a composition, method and article for a photomachinable glass having a coefficient of thermal expansion from less than 6&#xd7;10/&#xb0; C. in the temperature range of 0&#xb0; C. to 300&#xb0; C. The photomachinable glass composition is a low expansion glass having an amorphous glass phase and crystalline phases selected from the group consisting of spudomene and lithium disilicate.

A method of writing a pattern, such as a waveguide, in a bulk glass substrate. The bulk glass substrate can be formed from, for example, borosilicate or sulfide or lead glass. A pulsed laser beam is focused within the substrate while the focus is translated relative to the substrate along a scan path at a scan speed effective to induce an increase in the refractive index of the material along the scan path. Substantially no laser induced physical damage of the material is incurred along the scan path. Various optical devices can be made using this method.

Anamorphic lenses or lens arrays are formed in photosensitively crystallizable glass by selective exposure of the glass surface and thermal treatment to cause the crystallization of the glass surrounding the lenses. The lenses, which have elongated cross-sections in the plane of the exposed glass surface and raised curved surfaces resulting from the densification of the surround material, exhibit different surface curvatures over their major and minor transverse axes and thus anamorphic light-focusing properties.
