A weld joins a thin overlay of low carbon steel to a base that contains high carbon steel, at least at its surface along which the weld is formed. The weld may be effected by fusion (melting) or by solid-state diffusion. With either it creates a heat affected zone (HAZ) in the base around the weld. The HAZ contains enough austenite, and perhaps bainite as well, to render the HAZ relatively ductile and also crack resistant. Adjacent to the weld the HAZ has a hardness that does not exceed 58 HRC. The weld may be produced with a high energy beam or with resistance welding equipment.

Welding together low and high carbon steels

A vehicle differential includes a housing having bearing seats and a carrier provided with stub shafts which project into the bearing seats. The carrier is supported in the housing on two single row tapered roller bearings which allow the carrier to rotate, but confine it radially and axially. The housing also contains a beveled pinion which meshes with a beveled ring gear that is attached to the carrier. The two bearings are mounted in opposition and each includes a cup that is located in the bearing seat for that bearing, a cone that fits around the stub axle that projects into that bearing seat, and tapered rollers located between the cup and cone. Each bearing seat contains an internal thread and the bearing cup which fits into the seat has an external thread that engages the internal thread. Each cup also carries a locking ring which is engaged by an adjustment tool to turn the cup, but is later deformed into the housing to secure the cup against rotation. By rotating the cups in their bearing seats, one can adjust the setting of the bearings and the mesh setting of the pinion and ring gear.

Bearing arrangement for a vehicle differential

A hockey stick blade tool comprises a base and a pair of clamp assemblies mounted to the base. One clamp assembly is fixed to the base with the other being movable along the base length. To remove a blade, the shaft of a hockey stick is clamped in the fixed assembly and the blade is clamped in the movable assembly. The movable assembly is translated along the base in a direction away from the fixed clamp assembly to withdraw the blade from the shaft. The base also includes provision to provide heat during blade removal. The base has a pivotal cover which encloses the joint area between the blade end and the shaft end. A source of heat can be directed underneath the cover to heat the joint area to facilitate blade removal.

Hockey stick blade tool

A stainless steel bearing component containing in excess of 11% chromium and between 0.05% and 0.50% carbon is case-hardened by introducing carbon or nitrogen into the surface of the race using a plasma process. The component is heated in a chamber from which air is evacuated. There it is bombarded with hydrogen ions to clean its surface. Next, while the component remains at an elevated temperature, a gas containing carbon or nitrogen or both is introduced into the chamber where it exists at a relatively low pressure on the order of 2-9 torr. A plasma is produced intermittently, and it causes carbon or nitrogen or both to diffuse intio the surface of the component and create a case containing a greater proportion of carbon or nitrogen than the underlying core. Thereafter, the component is cooled and with most stainless steels this may be acheived by quenching in oil. Where the case is enriched in carbon, the component is thereafter reheated to a temperature where its core exists as single phase austenite and held at that temperature to effect a soak. An oil quench follows and it converts much of the austenite to martensite. The quench in turn may be followed by cryogenic cooling to convert retained sustenite into martensite. After assuming ambient temperature, the component is again heated to temper the hardened case.
