An upholstery tack strip includes a metal ribbon and a thermoplastic sleeve covering at least a portion of the ribbon. The sleeve includes at least one, and possibly a pair of, lengthwise removed strip section(s) so as to expose a corresponding lengthwise surface of the metal ribbon. The metal ribbon integrally includes nail sections which protrude outwardly from said tack strip. At least one, and preferably both, lateral edges of the metal ribbon are knurled or serrated so as to assist in anchoring the ribbon to the sleeve.

Upholstery fabric tack strips and methods of making same

Protective strips for use in the manufacture of upholstered furniture include a fastening strip portion, a cover strip portion and a hinge portion which flexibly connects the fastening and cover strip portions to one another. In use, the protective strips may be positioned such that a portion of the upholstery fabric is sandwiched between the fastening strip portion thereof and a portion of the furniture frame to which the fabric is to be attached. Suitable fasteners (e.g., staples, tacks, nails, brads and like fasteners) may then be physically driven through the fastening strip portion and the underlying fabric portion into the furniture frame and thereby fasten the fabric portion physically to the frame. Once the fastening strip portion has been fastened to the furniture frame, the remaining fabric portion may be doubled over the fastened tail portion which in turn causes the cover strip portion to be folded over the fastening strip portion. In such a manner, the heads of the fasteners are physically covered by the cover strip portion so as to prevent contact with the overlaid fabric. As such, rubbing of the fabric against the fastener heads is prevented so as to thereby preclude (or at least substantially minimize) fabric abrasion and wear.

An upholstery tack strip includes a thermoplastic sleeve and a metal ribbon embedded within the sleeve. The sleeve itself includes a plurality of removed material sections forming opposed pairs of sleeve windows, while the metal ribbon integrally includes nail sections which protrude outwardly from the tack strip through respective ones of the sleeve windows. Most preferably, the sleeve is extrusion-coated onto the metal ribbon stock using a cross-head die. The thus-coated metal strip preform may then be transferred to downstream fabrication operations whereby the sleeve windows and nail portions are formed. Since the nail portions protrude outwardly from the tack strip through the sleeve windows, relative lengthwise slippage between the metal ribbon stock and the sleeve is prevented.

Method for making an upholstery tack strip

Extrudable anti-static polyvinyl chloride (PVC) compositions include a quaternary ammonium compound as an anti-static agent, and a barium-cadmium-zinc component as a stablizing agent. The barium-cadmium-zinc component has been found to be critically required in order for the compositions to be processable (e.g., via extrusion) while retaining their desired anti-static characteristics. Shaped articles (e.g., floor mats, door strippings, and the like) may be formed from the compositions of this invention, and use in environments where static-charge dissipation is desired (e.g., computer rooms, hospitals, and the like).
