An interbody spacer is provided including a body portion, first orifices, and second orifices. The body portion includes a distal end portion, a proximal end portion, first and second side surfaces that extend between the distal and proximal end portions, and top and bottom surfaces configured and adapted to engage vertebral bodies. The body portion includes a cavity defined through the first side surface and the cavity increases in volume at an interior portion of the body portion. The first orifices are defined through the top surface and the second orifices are defined through the bottom surface. One of the first orifices has a cross-sectional configuration different from that of one of the second orifices. A method of use therefor is also provided.

Interbody spacer

A surgical assembly includes a tensioner having a first end and a second end. A tension member extends from the first end of the tensioner. A mounting member is connected to the second end of the tensioner. An arm extends from the first end of the tensioner and includes a series of relatively moveable links that define an axial bore configured for disposal of the tension member. Each link defines a first mating surface and a second mating surface disposed in a configuration such that tensioning of the tension member interlocks the first mating surface with the second mating surface of an adjacent link in the series to selectively fix the links in a selected orientation.

Surgical assembly with flexible arm

A sensor system for sensing a stimulus in vivo includes an implantable sensor. The sensor comprises a passive resonator circuit having a resonant frequency and including at least a pair of generally parallel spirally wound unconnected conductive coils sandwiching a layer of solid dielectric material that manifest a change in property affecting the resonant frequency in response to application of the stimulus to the layer. A resonant frequency of the sensor is modulated by altering the spacing or gap between the coils or altering the overlapping area of the coils. The sensor is energized through application of radiofrequency energy and the responding resonant frequency is detected. The sensor can be advantageously attached to a medical implant to form a practical smart implant for clinical purposes.

Sensor system, implantable sensor and method for remote sensing of a stimulus in vivo

An extender comprises a first extension including a first wall and extending between a proximal end and a distal end. The first wall defines an axial cavity including a distal portion, at least one ramp and a proximal portion. A second extension includes a projection. The projection is disposable in a first position with the distal portion of the axial cavity and the distal end of the first extension is disposed in a non-expanded orientation. The projection is slidably engageable with the at least one ramp for movement to a second position such that the projection is disposed with the proximal portion of the axial cavity and the distal end of the first extension is disposed in an expanded orientation. Methods of use are disclosed.

Spinal implant system and method

A retractor extension is provided comprising a body having a distal end and a proximal end extending longitudinally from the distal end, the distal end of the body comprising a first set of engagement members comprising a first projection configured for attaching the body to a first end surface of the retractor, the proximal end of the body comprising a second set of engagement members comprising a second projection configured for attaching the body to a second end surface of the retractor. In some embodiments, the retractor extension holds tissue away from the surgical incision to enhance the surgeon's field of vision. Methods of attaching the retractor extension to the retractor are also described.

Retractor extensions and methods of use

A spinal implant helps stabilize vertebrae for fusion. The implant includes first and second plates, a brace and a locking mechanism. When installed, the plates extend superiorly-inferiorly along respective lateral sides of the spinous processes. The plates are moved toward one another and relative to the brace by the locking mechanism to clamp the implant to the spinous processes.

One nonlimiting embodiment of the present application is directed to a system for positioning a connecting element adjacent one or more bones or bony portions, such as the spinal column, through a minimally invasive surgical approach. The system generally includes a number of bone anchors engageable to the one or more bones or bony portions and a number of anchor extenders removably engaged to the bone anchors. An inserter instrument is removably positioned adjacent to one of the anchor extenders and is operable to position a connecting element engaged thereto to a location adjacent the number of bone anchors in a minimally invasive surgical procedure. However, in other embodiments, different forms and applications are envisioned.
