Curtain air bag unit for a motor vehicle is provided which comprises an air bag extending parallel to the longitudinal axis of the motor vehicle. Further it comprises fixing means for fixing the air bag in the area of the roof bar of the motor vehicle, whereby the fixing means comprise a tension member, that extends from a first fixing element to a second fixing element. It also comprises tensioning means for influencing the tensile stress of the tension member during mounting of the curtain air bag unit into the motor vehicle. A pre-cut tension member can be used whose length is chosen in a way that the mounting in the vehicle can be carried out simply and conveniently.

Curtain air bag unit

An apparatus for mounting an airbag inflator to a vehicle includes a mounting adapter. The mounting adapter includes a base and at least one slot, wherein the base captures the inflator. A p-bracket that engages the slot is also added, wherein the p-bracket captures the inflator. A mounting tether is also looped around the p-bracket. A tether retainer or a wire harness retainer may also be added to the adapter.

Curtain airbag mounting device

An air-bag has a primary gas flow duct leading from a gas generator to one or more zones within the air-bag which are to be inflated. The air-bag has a separate inner gas flow duct mounted within the outer gas flow duct. The inner gas flow duct and the outer gas flow duct have areas thereof secured together in the region that is to be connected to the gas generator.

The present invention relates to an airbag cushion that is lighter-weight, smaller, and more compact than the previously known airbag systems, yet still capable of providing a vehicle occupant with ample impact protection during a crash. Generally, the airbag comprises a one-piece woven cushion with two or more inflatable chambers. These chambers have a generally flat two-dimensional shape in its uninflated and unfolded configuration. However, once gas is added, the airbag cushion rapidly inflates and converts into a three-dimensional shape capable of providing impact protection to the occupant. Preferably, the three-dimensional configuration of the inflated airbag is generally triangular, V-shaped, or polygonal in shape. One of the inflatable chambers functions as an inflatable impact chamber configured such that when an inflation gas in infused into the airbag cushion during a vehicle crash, the inflatable impact chamber inflates and presents a surface to receive the impact of the body of a vehicle occupant. One of the other inflatable chambers is configured to comprise an inflatable support column that is in fluid communication with the inflatable impact chamber. The inflatable support column is constructed such that if inflatable impact chamber begins to compress or deflate under the stress of a crash, the inflatable support column provides a compression-resisting force to the inflatable impact chamber. Additional inflatable support columns may also be added.

One piece cushion for personal airbag

The tethered airbag system includes an inflatable cushion and an extensible tether. The extensible tether includes an extensible region and is attached to both the inflatable cushion and to a point within a vehicle. For instance, the tether may be attached to the roof of the vehicle. When in use, the inflatable cushion deploys to a location immediately in front of an occupant of the vehicle. Following deployment of the cushion, when a sufficient force is applied to the inflatable cushion, the extensible region is released so that the extensible tether may extend to its full length and the inflatable cushion may extend further away from the point where the tether is attached to the vehicle.

Extensible tethered airbag system

An enhanced overhead airbag assembly is provided. The overhead airbag assembly has an airbag module designed to be attached to the roof of a vehicle, rearward of the header. The airbag module is concealed from vehicle occupants via a headliner assembly that includes a headliner, header trim, central console, and sun visors. The header trim covers at least a portion of the header and overlaps the forward edge of the headliner on the passenger's side. The passenger's side headliner is shaped to form a deployment door to permit emergence of the inflating airbag cushion. The headliner is tethered to the roof via a frangible fastener so that the headliner does not interfere with inflation or strike the occupant.

Overhead airbag deployment apparatus and method

An airbag tether retainer is disclosed that is of minimal size to accommodate vehicle safety and styling requirements and yields to conform to contours of a vehicle pillar. The tether retainer is interchangeable with left or right vehicle pillars thus reducing fabrication costs. The tether retainer imposes minimal stress on a worker attaching the retainer. In certain embodiments, the tether retainer includes a body and one or more tabs and corresponding tab locks which extend from the body. An airbag tether is positioned on the body and each tab is looped around the tether and secured to the body by a corresponding tab lock. The body may then be secured to a vehicle pillar.

Airbag tether retainer

A tether assembly attachable to an inflatable cushion airbag module is disclosed that is usable in vehicles including trucks, SUVs, and other vehicles with abrupt rear surfaces. The tether assembly does not require that the rear tether be extended back from the rear edge of the airbag. The tether assembly may be used in connection with an inflatable cushion airbag secured to the front portion of the vehicle using a standard front tether system. The tether assembly is attached via a sliding mechanism to a rear tether used to secure an inflatable cushion module airbag to an anchoring point within the vehicle. The sliding mechanism is also connected to a retractor, preferably through a flexible connector made of the webbing material used in seat belts. The tether assembly is configured so that when the inflatable cushion airbag deploys during an accident, the retractor supplies rearward tension on the airbag by causing the sliding mechanism to move along the path of the tether. This tension on the airbag prevents it from shifting from the position designated to give the occupant optimal protection against lateral impact and rollover. Preferably, the retractor does not supply tension to the airbag until after it has deployed. A locking mechanism can be attached to the retractor to prevent a reduction in the tension applied to the inflatable cushion by restraining motion of the sliding mechanism in a direction away from the retractor.

Rear tether retractor for an inflatable cushion

The present invention provides a system and method for tethering that may be used to keep a cushion properly positioned for side impact protection, particularly in vehicles in which space rearward of the cushion is limited. A tether attachment assembly according to the invention may include a tether attached to the cushion and to an anchoring point within the vehicle. An intermediate portion of the tether may pass within a tether restraint assembly that includes a tether restraint member attached to a vehicle surface. The tether restraint member may be a flexible strap, rigid bar, or the like. When the cushion deploys, the tether slides along the tether restraint member such that the tension exerted by the tether on the cushion is in the longitudinal direction.
