Embodiments of systems, methods, and machine-readable media are disclosed for enabling the management of a transit user account of a transit system with a mobile device. Embodiments of a transit system utilizing such transit user accounts are also disclosed. Embodiments for enabling a mobile device to manage a transit user account can include receiving an identification code of a fare media and receiving contact information of the mobile device. The transit user account, which can be used in transactions of the transit system associated with the fare media, can be created using user information and a passcode. Additionally, the mobile device can be authenticated by sending at least one message to the mobile device and receiving at least one message from the mobile device.

Transit account management with mobile device messaging

Embodiments provided herein include techniques for enabling a mobile device to communicate with smart media in a manner that can sidestep the secure element of the mobile device&#x2014;and the costs associated with it. The mobile device can communicate with the smart media using near-field communication (NFC) by creating an encrypted connection with a remote computer while bypassing a secure element of the mobile device. This allows the mobile device to provide point-of-sale (POS) functionality by reading and/or writing to the smart media, without compromising the security of the smart media. Embodiments may further enable the server to provide authentication information to a third party based on the communication between the smart media and the server.

Techniques for concurrent distribution of reloadable prepaid cards and enablement of the reloadable prepaid cards for use at access control points of a transit system. Techniques of enabling of the reloadable prepaid cards for use at access control points of the transit system can include obtaining user information, payment, and communicating card information to a card issuer for activation of the first reloadable prepaid card. A transit user account for managing transactional information of the user of the transit system is also created, reloadable prepaid card is enabled for use as fare media at access control points of the transit system. Thus, once distributed, the prepaid reloadable cards may be used as fare media in the transit system as payment for transit fare, as well as for purchases at locations outside the transit system.

Distribution and enablement of reloadable prepaid cards in transit

A method for facilitating bankless cash payments includes determining that a mobile device is within a threshold distance of a particular retail system and receiving a selection of a transit product or a stored value amount to be added to the virtual account. The method may also include providing the selection to a transit system and receiving, from the transit system, a code based on the selection. The code may include an amount to be tendered for the selection to be added to the virtual account. The method may further include providing the code to the particular retail system and receiving the transit product or the stored value amount on the mobile device from the transit system. The transit product or the stored value amount may be received upon the transit system receiving an indication from the retail system that the amount was tendered for the selection.
