A method and device for handling an elongate strength member. In the method, an elongate strength member with a plurality of elongate composite rods, or metal wires or plastic fibers are bundled together with the composite rods, or metal wires, or plastic fibers in a generally parallel and untwisted and un-spiraled arrangement when the elongate strength member is extended along a generally straight path, wherein the composite rods are longitudinally and rotatably moveable relative to each other. It is then twisted relative to a longitudinal dimension of the elongate strength member and the path of the elongate strength member is curved, such as by coiling.

Method for handling elongate strength members

A method of prestressing and reinforcing damaged pipes includes using a resin impregnated substrate, or a fiberglass fabric coated with a resin, to wrap a damaged area of the pipe. In order for the substrate to compress the pipe, the pipe is wrapped tightly. The compressed pipe has a negative hoop stress when the pipe is not under internal pressure. This negative hoop stress offsets the hoop stress due to the internal pressure from the fluid flow, so that the maximum hoop stress of the pipe is not exceeded. In an effort to provide this tightness, a pressurized portion of resin is introduced between the substrate and the pipe. A bladder may be inserted between the pipe and the substrate to contain a functional amount of prestressing resin injected under pressure. The resin used for prestressing can be the same as or different from the resin used to impregnate or coat the fiberglass strips.

Method of prestressing and reinforcing damaged cylindrical structures

There is provided an optical-fiber cable construction comprising a ruggedizing core providing at least one channel which contains at least one optical fiber surrounded by a gel. The gel is preferably thixotropic. The channel preferably extends from within the core to the external surface of the core, and the gel is partially contained in the core by means of a skin extending the width of the channel or by an axially oriented plug. The plug may be bonded to the walls of the channel or wedged in the channel.
