An imaging apparatus includes a controller and a media detection device mechanically engaged with a stack of print media. The media detection device has a movable indicator having a surface with distinct reflectance characteristics. A reflectance sensor is communicatively coupled to the controller. The reflectance sensor reads a reflectance of the surface and outputs a signal to the controller indicative of at least one characteristic of the print media.

Print media detection in an imaging apparatus

A modular print engine assembly for a peripheral comprises an upper paper support, a tray base, the upper paper support pivotally connected to one of the tray base or an extender disposed between the upper paper support and the tray base. The extender allows the modular print engine to be utilized across multiple print models or platforms with housings of various shape and size.

Automatic sheet feed extender for paperfeed modularity

A multifunction machine user interface has a minimal number user inputs, such as only one or two buttons. When a user places a media item, such as a printed sheet, in the scanner and activates a first user input, the machine scans the media item and assesses or determines whether the media item is to be treated for printing purposes as a color document, a color photograph, a monochrome (i.e., black-and-white) document, or a monochrome photograph. The machine then causes the media item to be printed in accordance with that assessment or determination. The assessment or determination can be made automatically by the machine or a host computer in communication with the machine in response to an evaluation of chrominance and luminance of the scanned pixels. Alternatively, the determination can be made by the user selecting corresponding settings through a user interface on the host computer.

A trough support rib for improved edge-to-edge printing having a media feedpath extending in a first direction, a printhead reciprocally movable in a second direction, the second direction defining a print zone, an ink trough, at least one support rib beneath the print zone within the ink trough, the at least one support rib having an upper angled edge for engaging print media defined by two beveled surfaces, the rib further including a notch for removal of overspray ink to the ink trough.

An imaging apparatus includes a printhead carrier for mounting a printhead cartridge. The printhead carrier includes a carrier back wall having an upper portion. A back portion of a printhead cartridge cradle is connected to the carrier back wall. A first proximal end of a latch lever is pivotably attached to a front portion of the printhead cartridge cradle. The latch lever has at least one cam follower, with each cam follower being located near the first distal end of the latch lever. A second proximal end of a carrier lid is pivotably attached to the upper portion of the carrier back wall. Each cam of the carrier lid is formed near a second distal end of the carrier lid, and each cam is positioned for progressive engagement by a corresponding cam follower as the latch lever is moved from an open position toward a latched position.

Printhead carrier for an imaging apparatus

A printer apparatus includes a frame and a print/scan assembly. The print/scan assembly includes a carriage assembly movably mounted on the frame. The carriage assembly includes a printhead carriage and a scanner carriage. The printhead carriage is adapted to hold a printhead and the scanner carriage is adapted to hold a scanning assembly. The scanner carriage is joined to the printhead carriage for movement therewith as the carriage assembly moves relative to the frame. A printhead may be mounted on the printhead carriage for movement therewith. A scanning assembly may be mounted on the scanner carriage for movement therewith.

Print/scan assembly and printer apparatus and methods including the same

A scanner is obtained having a subscan axis and having a scan bar including sensor elements positioned in at least one substantially linear array. Each array lies substantially in a plane defined by the subscan and scan-bar longitudinal axes. Each array is tilted with respect to a reference axis at a substantially nonzero angle which is fixed during any image scanning of the image used to create the final scanned image. The reference axis lies in the plane and is substantially perpendicular to the subscan axis. Image scanning the image is performed by relatively moving the scan bar over the image along the subscan axis. One embodiment of the scan bar includes a scan bar body and includes sensor elements supported by the scan bar body and positioned substantially in a common plane in multiple substantially linear arrays, wherein each array is tilted with respect to the scan-bar longitudinal axis.

A power supply keying method for use with an electrical apparatus includes defining a plurality of power supply classes; associating with the plurality of power supply classes a plurality of power supplies, each of the plurality of power supplies including a power supply housing having a unique keying arrangement corresponding to one power supply class of the plurality of power supply classes; and providing in the electrical apparatus a power supply receptacle for receiving at least one power supply of the plurality of power supplies, the unique keying arrangement of the power supply housing in conjunction with the power supply receptacle permitting reception of a particular power supply of the plurality of power supplies into the power supply receptacle only if the power supply class associated with the particular power supply has power supply electrical characteristics that satisfy electrical power requirements of the electrical apparatus.

Power supply keying arrangement for use with an electrical apparatus

An ink jet printer jets ink onto a section of a front side of a print medium. The ink jet printer includes an ink jetting printhead facing the front side of the print medium. A media support apparatus opposes the printhead. The media support apparatus includes a substantially flexible body having an outer surface engaging a back side of the print medium such that the section of the print medium receiving the ink is substantially flat. A substantially rigid elongate element engages the body and has a length direction substantially perpendicular to a feed direction of the print medium. The elongate element provides at least a portion of the outer surface of the body with a predetermined degree of straightness.

Precision writing line control platen for high resolution ink jet printing

An imaging apparatus provides a machine frame including a first side frame and a second side frame. A first plurality of platen mounting members is provided which are spaced apart and extend from the first side frame. A second plurality of platen mounting members is provided which are spaced apart and extend from the second side frame. A platen is positioned to extend between the first side frame and the second side frame. The platen has a first end including a first plurality of engagement members and has a second end including a second plurality of engagement members. A biasing assembly is coupled to the machine frame, wherein the biasing assembly applies a biasing force to the platen to move the first plurality of engagement members into respective engagement with the first plurality of platen mounting members and to move the second plurality of engagement members into respective engagement with the second plurality of platen mounting members.

Imaging apparatus having a biased platen

A print media handling system for an imaging apparatus having a media feed path includes a pair of media support members, each have a first wall defining a media contact surface and a support portion defining a media support surface. The pair of media support members are pivotally mounted to the imaging apparatus for symmetrical operation with respect to a centerline of the media feed path. The pair of media support members define a media bin for receiving printed media. The print media handling system further includes a drive system for operating the pair of media support members between a first position wherein the media support surface of the pair of support members carries a printed media sheet and a second position wherein the printed media sheet is released to fall into the media bin. The drive system further controls the pair of media support members such that the contact surface of each of the pair of media support members contacts opposing edges of the printed media to align the printed media in the media bin.

Print media handling system and method of using same

Disclosed is a replaceable media guide for use with a sheet feeding mechanism. The media guide includes a support plate, an edge guide projecting substantially at right angles from the support plate, and a first sheet engaging friction pad engaged with the support plate. The guide is designed so that the first friction pad faces a friction roller of a sheet feeding mechanism when the guide is mounted on the sheet feeding mechanism. A sheet feeding apparatus is also provided in which the media guide is inserted into the sheet feeding mechanism.
