A method for reducing atherosclerotic plaques includes administering an effective amount of at least one fatty acid composition to an animal, said fatty acid composition having a carbon chain of at least 16 carbons in length, and wherein at least one pair of double bonds are in a conjugated position. Such a method and article of manufactures facilitating these methods may be useful for reducing atherosclerotic plaques in humans.

Novel compounds which are 7-acylderivatives of ursodeoxycholic acid are described of formula ##STR1## in which R-CO is the residue from a linear, saturated or unsaturated, carboxylic acid of 2-18 carbon atoms or the residue from a cycloalkanecarboxylic acid of 3-7 carbon atoms in the cycloalkane ring. The novel compounds are useful in the therapy of biliary calculosis, biliary diskinesia and hypertriglyceridemia.

Novel derivatives of ursodeoxycholic acid

Novel compounds are described, which are 7-acyl-chenodeoxycholic acid of formula (I) ##STR1## in which R-CO is the residue from a linear, saturated or unsaturated carboxylic acid of 3-18 carbon atoms or the residue from a cycloalkanecarboxylic acid of 3-7 carbon atoms in the cycloalkane ring. The compounds are prepared by selective hydrolysis of the 3,7-diacyl derivatives of chenodeoxycholic acid. The compounds are valuable against biliary calculosis, diskinesia and hypertriglyceridemia.

Derivatives of chenodeoxycholic acid

A bread containing substantial quantities of alfalfa provides a convenient, palatable form of introducing significant quantities of alfalfa into the human diet. The bread, which preferably contains honey, retains bread-like texture, taste and odor despite the presence of substantial quantities of alfalfa. Alfalfa, a nonnutritive fiber, functions as a hypocholesteremic agent.
