An optoelectronic light source includes a semiconductor laser configured to produce polarized primary radiation, a converter material configured to absorb at least part of the primary radiation and convert the primary radiation into a secondary radiation of an increased wavelength, a planar multi-layered mirror located between the semiconductor laser and the converter material, the multi-layered mirror configured to transmit the primary radiation and reflect the secondary radiation, and an optical element provided between the semiconductor laser and the multi-layered mirror, wherein the optical element is configured such that the primary radiation coming from the semiconductor laser impinges on the multi-layered mirror at a Brewster angle.

Optoelectronic light source

An optoelectronic semiconductor light source includes a semiconductor chip configured to emit primary radiation, a Bragg mirror, and a luminescence conversion element configured to convert at least part of the primary radiation into secondary radiation having a longer wavelength, wherein the Bragg mirror is arranged between the semiconductor chip and the luminescence conversion element, the Bragg mirror is reflective for the secondary radiation and transmissive for the primary radiation, the Bragg mirror includes reflector layers of at least three different materials with different refractive indices, the Bragg mirror includes at least two different kinds of layer pairs, each kind of layer pairs being made up of reflective layers of two different materials, and the different kinds of layer pairs having different Brewster angles for p-polarized radiation.

Optoelectronic semiconductor light source and Bragg mirror

Microfluidics has made great progress in integrating many aspects of biological analysis and testing into the microscale. One aspect which has proven challenging to miniaturize has been fluorescence testing, as a complete fluorescence system requires an integrated light source, detector and filters to filter out the excitation light (from the light source) from the detector. Here we demonstrate that with polarization filtering of the excitation light and multiple dye sources modulated at different frequencies, a high-sensitivity, multi-dye system with one detector can be realized. Simultaneous detection and quantition of a mixture of two different dyes is demonstrated with no physical change in the measurement setup. The degree of interaction of the dyes is measured. This system is readily adaptable to integrated lab-on-a-chip microfluorescence.

Simultaneous, single-detector fluorescence detection of multiple analytes with frequency-specific lock-in detection

A modulating retroreflector system includes a modulating retroreflector having a plurality of multiple quantum well modulator pixels and at least one transimpedance amplifier. The transimpedance amplifier receives a photocurrent generated by at least one of the plurality of modulator pixels. Each pixel is capacitively coupled to a current driver, which applies a high frequency digital electrical signal to the pixel when the voltage at the output of the transimpedance amplifier exceeds a threshold value. The modulated output of the retroreflector is reflected toward the source of the received optical beam. The system activates high frequency current drivers for only the illuminated pixels, eliminating the need for a separate angle of incidence sensor and reducing power requirements. A low frequency FSK signal can be superimposed on the DC optical interrogation beam and recovered as the unfiltered output of the transimpedance amplifier, to provide simultaneous bidirectional communication without a half-duplex communication protocol.
