Techniques are described for reducing time to decrypt a next encrypted frame in a content stream by optimizing a license/key acquisition process. When requesting content, a key identifier and/or license identifier may be included within a webpage using a link, script, or similar access point. When a client device sends a request for content, the loading of the webpage within the client device includes the embedded key identifier. Access to the key/license identifier at the client device then may initiate a key/license acquisition process by the client device. The key/license may be obtained from a key management device in parallel with, or prior to, downloading of at least a portion of the content stream.

The disclosed subject matter relates to systems, methods, and media for media session concurrency management with recurring license renewals. A content protection operation or license operation is performed for at least one media object of a web application. Some or all of the objects are then marked as protected. Embodiments are directed towards managing play of at least one stream of digital content to reduce a time to a first frame or seek frame within the content by playing unencrypted portions of the digital content received at a client device at least until key negotiations and decryption actions are completed for corresponding encrypted digital content, at which point play is switched to the decrypted content in a seamless manner. In one embodiment, the unencrypted content is at a lower quality, resolution, or bit rate than the encrypted content. In one embodiment, the at least one stream is a stream of content that includes at least a first portion that is unencrypted, and a second portion that is encrypted. In another embodiment, the at least one stream includes a first stream that is unencrypted and played until a second, encrypted, stream is readied for play.

Method for reducing time to first frame/seek frame of protected digital content streams

Embodiments are directed towards generating an image from a plurality of content layers. The content layers may include secure content that overlaps at least one other content layer. When the image is generated, the secure content may be rendered as a layer below the plurality of content layers. Additionally, each area of content layers that is overlapped by an area of the secure content may be modified to be transparent, where the area of the secure content is visible in the image through each transparently modified area. In some embodiments, an alpha channel value of each pixel in each area of content layers that is overlapped by the secure content may be modified. Secure content and unsecure content at a same layer may be split into different layers, where the unsecure content layer may be rendered at a theoretical secure content layer.

Browser/web apps access to secure surface

This disclosure relates to enhanced user control for content protection solutions. An options component determines or infers a set of digital rights management solutions supported by a content source, and a data component determines or infers information associated with respective digital rights management solutions supported by the content source. The set of digital rights management solutions can further be supported by a client device. A prompt component provides a user a set of digital rights management options based at least in part on the set of digital rights management solutions supported by the content source and the information, and enables the user to select zero or more of the digital rights management options. The content source can enable access for a subset of associated content based at least in part on the selections of the user.

Enhanced user control for content protection solutions

A video is analyzed to identify interest level for a plurality of frames. The interest level is determined based on analysis of the content of each of the plurality of frames or how often other clients view the frames or take actions while viewing the frames. Frames are clustered and key frame locations are determined for each of the clusters. Key frames are given a higher buffering priority than non key frames. Buffering of key frames is prioritized based on key frame interest level. Key frames are also utilized to enable a client to skip forward or backward between key frames and view content that is likely to be of interest to the user.

Determining interest levels in videos

Embodiments are directed towards decrypting encrypted content. A key for decrypting the encrypted content may be provided to a web application executing within a browser. The application may employ a generic cryptography application program interface (GCAPI) to perform actions on the key, including, storing the key, decrypting an encrypted key, generating another key, converting the key to a different encryption type, or the like. The GCAPI may or may not be enabled to explicitly share the key with the browser's media engine. In response to receiving encrypted content, the GCAPI may provide the key to the application, explicitly or inexplicitly to the browser's media engine, or the like. The key may be utilized by the application, the browser, the media element, browser's media engine, and/or the GCAPI to decrypt the encrypted content. The decrypted content may be displayed within the browser to a user of a client device.

Use of generic (browser) encryption API to do key exchange (for media files and player)

A method, apparatus, and manufacture for configuring multiple content protection systems is provided. A client media player is employed to determine whether media content is protected. The client media player includes an application, and further includes a media engine that is a distinct program from the application. At least one type of content protection system supported by the media engine is determined. The application is employed to get a key and/or a license for the protected media content in accordance with the determined type of content protection system. The application is employed to instruct the media engine to play the media content. The key and/or the license for the determined type of content protection system is sent from the application to the media engine.
