A head up display arrangement for a motor vehicle includes a head up display producing a virtual image that is visible to a driver of the motor vehicle when he is sitting in a driver's seat and his eyes are above a first vertical level and below a second vertical level. An eye tracking system detects a vertical level of the eyes of the driver and transmits a height signal indicative of the detected vertical level of the eyes of the driver. A motorized seat height adjustment module adjusts a vertical level of the driver's seat. An electronic controller is communicatively coupled to the eye tracking system and to the motorized seat height adjustment module. The electronic controller controls the motorized seat height adjustment module based on the height signal to move the driver's eyes to a vertical position above the first vertical level and below the second vertical level.

A head up display arrangement for a motor vehicle includes a head up display module having a picture generation unit emitting a light field. A plurality of linear polarizers are arranged in a stack. A first of the linear polarizers receives the light field from the picture generation unit. A last of the linear polarizers emits the light field. A windshield reflects the light field from the last linear polarizer such that the reflected light field is visible to a human driver of the motor vehicle as a virtual image.

A head up display arrangement for a motor vehicle includes a source of a first video signal. A driver monitor system detects a location of at least a portion of a human driver of the motor vehicle. An electronic processor is communicatively coupled to the first video signal source and to the driver monitor system. The electronic processor produces a second video signal that is dependent upon the first video signal and that includes parallax information. The parallax information is based on the detected location of the portion of the driver. A head up display projection device produces a virtual image that is visible to the driver and that is based upon the second video signal.

A combiner is positioned and configured to reflect the light field such that the light field can be viewed by the human occupant as a virtual image. A motor vehicle includes a head up display projector producing a light field based upon image data such that the light field is reflected off of a windshield of the motor vehicle and is then visible to a driver of the motor vehicle as a virtual image. First means determines locations of physical objects visible to the driver through the windshield. Second means determines locations of eyes of the driver. An electronic processor receives first data indicative of the determined locations of the physical objects, and receives second data indicative of the determined locations of the eyes of the driver. The electronic processor produces the image data dependent upon the first data and the second data such that a symbol in the virtual image appears to be in a predetermined position relative to a selected one of the physical objects.

A head up display arrangement for a motor vehicle includes a head up display projector including a lens with a polarizer. The head up display projector emits a linearly polarized light field via the lens. A windshield reflects the light field such that the reflected light field is visible to a human driver of the motor vehicle as a virtual image. The windshield includes an outer plastic layer sandwiched between a half-wave plate and an outer glass layer. An inner plastic layer is sandwiched between the half-wave plate and an inner glass layer.

A liquid crystal display arrangement for a motor vehicle includes a plurality of light emitting diodes positioned to backlight a liquid crystal display. A plurality of electrical conductors are each electrically connected to, and provide electrical power to, a different respective subset of the light emitting diodes. An electronic controller is electrically coupled to each of the conductors and individually controls conduction of electricity through each of the conductors to thereby change a brightness of at least one of the subsets of the light emitting diodes relative to a brightness of at least one other subset of the light emitting diodes during operation of the motor vehicle.

A head up display arrangement for a motor vehicle includes a body that is at least partially transparent and that has a plurality of outer surfaces. An image source emits an illuminated image into a transparent portion of the body such that the illuminated image is internally reflected off the outer surfaces a plurality of times within the transparent portion of the body before leaving the body and then being reflected off of a windshield of the vehicle such that the illuminated image is visible to a driver of the vehicle.

Variable disparity three-dimensional (3D) display system and method of operating the same

A contoured display that includes a faceplate configured to propagate an image in a collimated manner from an interface surface of the faceplate configured to receive the image from a display device to a display surface of the faceplate. The display surface is contoured to provide a three-dimensional (3D) contoured surface that provides designers with artistic freedom when designing a display shape, and a convenient way to contour a display surface to reduce the effects of glare on the display surface.
