The present invention provides a system and method for producing superconducting joints between superconductive segments of a Bi-2212 high-temperature superconducting (HTS) conductor, thereby eliminating the heat generating resistive joints that are commonly known in the art for connecting two or more smaller Bi-2212 conductive segments to create an Bi-2212 conductor of adequate length.

A device and method for sheathing shrink tubing onto materials such as wire, tape, or cables. The device cannot only sheath short lengths of shrink tubing onto material, but also sheath long lengths shrink tubing onto material. Varying embodiments of this device can insulate whole lengths of material with shrink tubing as well as covering certain sections of material for a more precise application.

An electric joint design to be used in electromagnetic coils made with high-temperature superconducting tape, aspected wire, or cable. A terminal member contains an engraved twist-bend contour, which receives the coil and changes the direction of the coil by about 90 degrees without any hard-bends. A current lead is aligned with terminal section of the coil establishing an electric joint whose length is not limited by the coil geometry. Resistance is distributed along the length of the electric joint to reduce heat generation. The electric joint is placed away from the area where the magnetic forces are high to eliminate the problem of helium gas becoming trapped.

A novel method and structure for creating a high-temperature superconducting tape. The concept of the invention is to use a conductor insulation which not only electrically insulates the conductors of the coil windings from each other, but also mechanically insulates them from the much stronger encapsulant. The insulation material mechanically decouples the conductor from the encapsulant at the boundary between them, thereby preventing damage as a result of thermal and electromagnetic shearing forces. The proposed structure allows the encapsulant to continue performing its functions of preventing coarse motion and stabilizing the coil as a whole, while allowing fine relative displacements of individual coil windings caused by radial stress gradients.

Mechanical decoupling in high-temperature superconducting tapes

A stress-strain test for conductors. A test assembly receives first and second conductive layers and a dielectric layer adjacent each of the conductive layers. The layers are generally ring-shaped and concentric when received by the test assembly and the dielectric layer separates the conductive layers from each other. A magnetic field source provides a magnetic field to the test assembly and a variable current source provides current to the second conductive layer. A circuit measures a change in capacitance between the conductive layers when the current in the second conductive layer is varied whereby the stress and strain characteristics of the second conductive layer are determined as a function of the capacitance change.
