A system, method, and computer program product for self-identification of a device. The disclosure utilizes generation of a public/private key pair, within the device itself, and completes at least a portion of an authentication process within the device itself using a securely stored private key that never leaves the device. By not transferring the private key away from the device, potential vulnerabilities of known systems due to transfer of identification information during or after manufacturing is effectively eliminated.

Secure self-identification of a device

Aspects provide methods to discretely and intelligently make a user aware of a service or product offered by a subscriber without distracting the user with a full advertisement. More specifically, aspects provide methods and systems for selectively outputting an audio chime in response to a trigger event, wherein the audio chime provides an indication of a service or product offered by the subscriber. In response to a user's acceptance of the audio chime, a second chime, further engaging the user, is output.

Various implementations include approaches for authenticating user identity with audio-based verification. Certain approaches include: receiving a request to authenticate a user of an audio device; prompting the user of the audio device to speak a verification word or phrase in response to receiving the request; detecting an acoustic response at the audio device or a connected smart device; comparing the detected acoustic response with an acoustic signature of a known user associated with the audio device and the verification word or phrase, wherein the audio device is registered as an authentication device prior to receiving the request to authenticate the user of the audio device; and sending a confirmation response indicating the user of the audio device is the known user in response to the acoustic response corresponding with the acoustic signature and the verification word or phrase.

A joystick for generation of directional control signals for computers, video games, remote controllers, and other electronic devices and instrumentation. The present invention comprises a resistive membrane sensor and an actuator for coupling directional forces onto the membrane sensor. The resistive membrane sensor is comprised of two insulating substrates with resistor rings on each substrate, conductive leads, and a pressure-variable resistor. Increasing pressure on the actuator and membrane sensor decreases the resistance of the pressure-variable resistor in series with the resistor rings. An electronic circuit measures the membrane sensor and converts the resistances into the X and Y components of the force vector acting on the joystick. An alternative membrane sensor comprises a resistive ring, a conductive ring, and a pressure-variable resistor.

A remote control system for control of an external device from a remote location is disclosed that comprises a remote controller 11 and a receive and display unit 16. The remote controller employs a touch fader 10, which the user touches to activate a visual feedback system 14, such as menus and bargraphs, in the receive and display unit. Changing the position of the touchpoint will change the selection, allowing the user to easily scroll through many selections or a hierarchy of menus. Releasing the touch fader will signal the user's acceptance of a selection. Commands are sent to control the external device according to the user selections which follow from a predefined command structure.

Touch sensitive user interface for television control

A touch sensor is disclosed that senses the two-dimensional position and pressure of an object 34, such as a stylus or finger, that is touching its surface. The sensor is comprised of two insulating substrates 28 and 29 which extend over the area to be sensed. A first fixed resistor 33 establishes a potential gradient over the first substrate 29 in a first, or X, position dimension. A second fixed resistor 32 establishes a potential gradient over the second substrate 28 in a second, or Y, position dimension. Between the substrates is a force variable resistor 42 that changes its local resistance under the touch point as a function of the touch pressure. Two touch controllers are also disclosed that comprise the touch sensor 50 and an electronic circuit that accurately measures the resistance values of the touch sensor. The touch controllers output three signals: the X position, the Y position, and the pressure of the touch point. The first touch controller uses a current regulator 51 to supply a constant current through the touch sensor. The second touch controller uses a voltage regulator 67 to supply a constant voltage across the touch sensor.

A touch controller is presented that comprises a touch sensor employing a resistive membrane, and an analog electronic circuit that accurately measures the touch position and the touch pressure on the sensor. Several variations of the electronic circuit are presented based on the principle of providing a constant current through the touch sensor, measuring the position with a differential amplifier, and measuring the touch pressure at the output of the current regulator. The touch sensors that may be used include resistive coatings such are used in overlays for computer displays, and force-sensing resistors. The circuits are simple, accurate and low-cost, yet provide measurements of the touch position that are fully decoupled from the pressure measurement, without approximation. The result is that the useful range of touch sensitivity is extended to include very light touches, without sacrificing position accuracy.
