A system for delivering ultra-high dose rate irradiation to a target area of a patient, includes a pulsed charged-particle source along a beam axis; a collimator for shaping the beam of radiation; one or more cameras for imaging the target area of the patient; and a dosimetry controller for providing control signals to the charged-particle source one or more dosimeters positioned between an output of the charged-particle source and the collimator in beam fringes for measuring a radiation dosage provided by each pulse; and a beam scanning coil positioned between the collimator and the patient for directing the shaped beam. The dosimetry controller receives feedback from the one or more dosimeters and provides control signals to the particle source and the beam scanning coil that modulate final pulses in the series of pulses in real-time.

Systems and methods for FLASH therapy

A Cherenkov-based or thin-sheet scintillator-based imaging system uses a radio-optical triggering unit (RTU) that detects scattered radiation in a fast-response scintillator to detect pulses of radiation to permit capture of Cherenkov-light or scintillator-light images during pulses of radiation and background images at times when pulses of radiation are not present without need for electrical interface to the accelerator that provides the pulses of radiation. The Cherenkov images are corrected by background subtraction and used for purposes including optimization of treatment, commissioning, routine quality auditing, R&D, and manufacture. The radio-optical triggering unit employs high-speed, highly sensitive radio-optical sensing to generate a digital timing signal which is synchronous with the treatment beam for use in triggering Cherenkov light or scintillator light imaging.

Dosimetry systems for radiation treatment using radiation-detector-triggered cameras to image Cherenkov emissions or thin-sheet scintillators

A monitor for pulsed high energy radiation therapy using a radiation beam passing through a treatment zone, the radiation of 0.2 MEV or greater; has a camera for imaging Cherenkov light from the treatment zone; apparatus for preventing interference by room lighting, the camera synchronized to pulses of the radiation beam; and an image processor adapted to determine extent of the beam area on the patient skin from the images. Additionally an image processor determines cumulative skin dose in the treatment zone from the images. In embodiments, the processor uses a three-dimensional model of a subject to determine mapping of image intensity in images of Cherenkov light to radiation intensity in skin, applies the mapping to images of Cherenkov light to verify skin dose delivered, and accumulates skin dose by summing the maps of skin dose.

Cherenkov imaging systems and methods to monitor beam profiles and radiation dose while avoiding interference from room lighting

A system for providing monitored radiation therapy has a high energy radiation source, apparatus for excluding uncontrolled ambient light, and apparatus for collecting light emitted from a subject. The system has apparatus for spectrally analyzing the collected light, and a processor for determining oxygenation or other metabolic function of tissue within the subject from spectral analysis of the collected light. The system monitors radiation therapy by providing a beam of high energy radiation; collecting Cherenkov and/or photoluminescent light from the subject, the light generated along the beam; spectrally analyzing the light; and determining oxygenation or metabolic function of tissue from the spectral analysis. Beam profile of the system is calibrated by imaging from multiple angles Cherenkov and/or photoluminescent light emitted by a phantom placed in the beam in lieu of a subject, captured images are analyzed to determine beam profile.
