Described herein are lubricant compositions that include combinations of lubricant additives that are effective at improving the surface finish of a range of manufactured materials and equipment. In particular, friction modifiers and antiwear additives are employed to decrease surface roughness of additive manufactured (AM), e.g., 3D printed, materials and equipment in concert with maximizing energy efficiency.

Lubricant compositions for surface finishing of materials

A method for improving wear control in an engine or other mechanical component lubricated with a lubricating oil by using as the lubricating oil a formulated oil. The formulated oil has a composition including a lubricating oil base stock as a major component, and encapsulated boron-containing microscale particles, as a minor component. The minor component preferably contains no metal or sulfur, and preferably no phosphorus. The encapsulated boron-containing microscale particles include an encapsulating material and a boron-containing compound encapsulated by the encapsulating material. The boron-containing compound is a boron oxide, a boric acid, or mixtures thereof. The encapsulating material is a carboxylic acid selected from an aliphatic carboxylic acid, a cycloaliphatic carboxylic acid, an aromatic carboxylic acid, and mixtures thereof. The lubricating oils are useful in internal combustion engines.

Lubricating oil compositions containing encapsulated microscale particles

A method for improving wear control in an engine or other mechanical component lubricated with a lubricating oil by using as the lubricating oil a formulated oil. The formulated oil has a composition including a lubricating oil base stock as a major component, and encapsulated microscale particles, as a minor component. The minor component contains no sulfur or phosphorus. The encapsulated microscale particles include an encapsulating material and a core material encapsulated by the encapsulating material. The core material includes at least one metal salt selected from a metal oxide, metal hydroxide, metal carbonate, or mixtures thereof. The encapsulating material is derived from a carboxylic acid selected from an aliphatic carboxylic acid, a cycloaliphatic carboxylic acid, an aromatic carboxylic acid, and mixtures thereof. The lubricating oils are useful in internal combustion engines.

A method for improving wear control, while maintaining or improving fuel efficiency, in an engine or other mechanical component lubricated with a lubricating oil by using as the lubricating oil a formulated oil. The formulated oil has a composition including a lubricating oil base stock as a major component, and (i) at least one transition metal salt of a carboxylic acid (e.g., zinc stearate) or (ii) a mixture of at least one transition metal salt of a carboxylic acid (e.g., zinc stearate) and at least one detergent (i.e., an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt of an organic acid, or an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt of an inorganic acid, or an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt of a phenol, or mixtures thereof (e.g., calcium salicylate and/or magnesium sulfonate)), as a minor component. The lubricating oils are useful in internal combustion engines.

Lubricating oil compositions with engine wear protection

A method for improving wear control in an engine or other mechanical component lubricated with a lubricating oil by using as the lubricating oil a formulated oil. The formulated oil has a composition that includes a lubricating oil base stock as a major component; and at least one phosphazene represented by the formula as a minor component. In the above formula, Q is nitrogen, sulfur or oxygen; a is a value from about 2 to about 6, c is a value from about 2 to about 6, e is a value from about 2 to about 6, g is a value from about 2 to about 6, i is a value from about 2 to about 6, and k is a value from about 2 to about 6; b is a value of 2a+q, d is a value of 2c+r, f is a value of 2e+s, h is a value of 2g+t, j is a value of 2i+u, and l is a value of 2k+v; q, r, s, t, u and v are independently a value of 0 or &#x2212;2; with the proviso that not all of a, c, e, g, i and k are the same value. A lubricating oil having a composition that includes a lubricating oil base stock as a major component; and at least one phosphazene represented by the above formula as a minor component. The lubricating oil is useful in internal combustion engines.

Lubricating oil compositions with engine wear protection and solubility

Lubricating oils of improved initial and long term metal corrosion inhibiting properties comprises a base stock containing one or more hydrodewaxate or hydroisomerate base stock(s) and/or base oil(s), GTL base stock(s) and/or base oil(s), or mixtures thereof, preferably GTL base stock(s) and/or base oil(s), boiling in the lubricating oil boiling range and an additive amount of an anti-corrosion additive.

Method for improving the corrosion inhibiting properties of lubricant compositions

Disclosed in one embodiment is a hydrocarbon blend made from 0.001 to 10 wt % of at least one poly-&#x3b1;-olefin, by weight of the blend, the at least one poly-&#x3b1;-olefin having a Kvwithin the range of from 10 to 3000 cSt and a molecular weight distribution within the range of from 1.0 to 4.5; and a base stock having a Kvbelow 20.0 cSt; wherein the at least one poly-&#x3b1;-olefin is present in an amount sufficient to lower the pour point of the blend by at least 5&#xb0; C. relative to the pour point of the base stock. In certain embodiments the blend is formed by (a) reacting a catalyst composition and a feed containing at least two sets of &#x3b1;-olefins, wherein the first set of &#x3b1;-olefins is selected from Cto C&#x3b1;-olefins and the second set of &#x3b1;-olefins is selected from Cor larger &#x3b1;-olefins. The &#x3b1;-olefin feed may have a number average carbon number of at least 8 carbon atoms or greater.

Pour point depressant for hydrocarbon compositions

A poly(alpha-olefin/alkylene glycol) copolymer of the following formula: wherein R, R, Ra, and Rb are, independently, any of H, a Cto Cnormal or branched alkyl radical, or a Cto Caromatic radical or aromatic-containing alkyl radicals; wherein n and m, are, independently, integers from 1 to 1000; and wherein x is an integer from 0 to 10. There is also a process for making the copolymer. There is also a lubricant formulation having the copolymer.

Poly(alpha-olefin/alkylene glycol) copolymer, process for making, and a lubricant formulation therefor

The air release rate of lubricating compositions is significantly enhanced when the composition is formulated with one or more vinyl aromatic-olefin block copolymers that forms a micelle-like structure in the oil. Compositions having the specified copolymers retain less than about 2.5% air after 1 min. at 50&#xb0; C. when tested by ASTM D 3427.

Lubricant air release rates

Lubricating base oils/base stocks comprising one or more hydrodewaxate and/or hydroisomerate base stock(s) and/or base oil(s), GTL base stock(s) and/or base oil(s) or mixture thereof, preferably GTL base stock(s) and/or base oil(s) of improved solvency comprise said base stock combined with a Group I base stock/base oil selected from the group consisting of high viscosity Group I mineral oil, preferably Bright Stock. The solvency and the capability to solubilize performance additives of base oils comprising one or more hydrodewaxate and/or hydroisomerate base stock(s) and/or base oil(s), GTL base stock(s) and/or base oil(s) or mixture thereof, preferably GTL base stock(s) and/or base oil(s) is improved by the addition to said base oils of a Group I base oil/base stock selected from the group consisting of high viscosity Group I mineral oil, preferably Bright Stock.

Lubricant composition with improved solvency

The present invention is directed to a lubricant composition comprising GLT base stock with an ashless detergent to improve air release properties. The ashless detergents comprise the products resulting from the reaction of a salicylic acid, organic group substituted salicylic acid, sulfonic acid or organic groups substituted sulfur acid with thiadiazole or organic group substituted thiadiazole or an alkyl primary or secondary amine.

Lubricant and method for improving air release using ashless detergents

The present invention concerns a detergent additive for lubricating oil compositions comprising at least two of low, medium, and high TBN detergents. Preferably the detergent is a calcium salicylate. The present invention also concerns lubricating oil compositions comprising such detergents, and at least one of Group II base stock, Group III base stock, or wax isomerate base stock.

Mixed TBN detergents and lubricating oil compositions containing such detergents

The present invention relates to formulated lubricant oils derived from a highly paraffinic basestock. The lubricating oils of the present invention achieve the extremely stringent viscosity requirements of SAE '0W' crossgraded engine oils and demonstrate an excellent combination of low-temperature performance and biodegradability not achievable by other formulations derived from other classes of basestocks.

Formulated lubricant oils containing high-performance base oils derived from highly paraffinic hydrocarbons

The present invention provides a viscosity index improving lubricant additive which comprises an olefinic oligomer of about 2,000 to about 20,000 number average molecular weight having a viscosity of 75 to about 3,000 cSt at 100&#xb0; C. and a hydrocarbyl aromatic which contains at least about 5% of its weight from aromatic moieties having a viscosity of about 3 to about 50 cSt at 100&#xb0; C. where the weight ratio of hydrocarbyl aromatic component to olefin oligomer is from about 1:2 to about 50:1. In another aspect, the invention provides for a lubricating oil composition comprising a base oil and the instant viscosity index improving additive.

Lubricating oil compositions

The present invention relates to a fully formulated lubicants comprising poly &#x3b1;-olefins (PAOs), prepared from a mixed &#x3b1;-olefin feed, which exhibit superior Noack volatility at low pour points, and methods for preparing the fully formulated lubricants. The fully formulated lubricants include PAOs that include mixtures of 1-decene and 1-dodecene. The PAOs may be prepared by polymerization/oligomerization using an alcohol promoted BFin conjunction with a combination of co-catalysts.
