A control system for a harmonic neutralized frequency changer. The control system includes a processor, a narrow band harmonic controller and a fundamental current controller. The narrow band harmonic controller is communicably connected to the processor and is configured to reduce a positive sequence component, a negative sequence component and a zero sequence component of a harmonic generated by a cycloconverter of the harmonic neutralized frequency changer. The fundamental current controller is communicably connected to the processor and is configured to reduce a fundamental frequency component of current flowing in a neutralization inverter of the harmonic neutralized frequency changer.

Harmonic neutralized frequency changer (HFNC) control system and a HFNC including the same

A system. The system includes a first module, a second module communicably connected to the first module, a third module communicably connected to the first module, and a fourth module communicably connected to the third module. The first module is configured for determining an angle. The angle is defined by a first rotating reference frame having an axis aligned with a permanent magnet flux of a permanent magnet motor, and a vector of a motor magnetizing flux of the permanent magnet motor. The second module is configured for defining a second rotating reference frame having an axis aligned with the vector, and for transforming a two-phase set of direct currents from the first rotating reference frame to the second rotating reference frame. The first and second rotating reference frames are synchronized. The third module is configured for generating a first direct current reference signal associated with the second rotating reference frame. The fourth module is configured for generating a second direct current reference signal associated with the second rotating reference frame. The first and second desired direct current reference signals are orthogonal.

System and method for controlling an electric motor

Systems and methods for improving the current pulse from multiple pairs of pulsed alternators used for driving large loads such as an electromagnetic launcher (i.e., 'rail gun') load. Conventional current pulse ripples are reduced by interleaving pulses from multiple pairs of contra-rotating pulsed alternators. Current pulses supplied by different pairs of pulsed alternators are timed so that they are interspersed between one another to provide more pulses for a given launch time. The interleaved current pulses increase the frequency and reduce the magnitude of the ripple on the average load current.

Ripple reduction in electromagnetic launcher current from pulsed alternators

A linear motor system including compartmentalized stator sections provides an interchangeable and serviceable alternative to other linear motors. The stator sections may be individually-energized so that power is only sent to stator sections adjacent to the thrust plate or rotor of the linear motor. A sufficiently long thrust plate is used to cover any gaps in the linear stator, and additional compensation stator sections are used to provide additional motor force to the thrust plate adjacent to these gap sections. If utilized onboard a ship, additional compensation stator sections may be incorporated into the face of deck hatches. The linear motor system can also be used to counteract gravitational effects in a large hanging door system implementation.

Modular linear electric motor with limited stator excitation zone and stator gap compensation

A control system for a linear motor adapted to accurately supply a moving window of power to the stator coils. A plurality of individually switched stator coils run the length of a linear motor to move a rotor down the long axis of the stator. Accurate inductive-based position sensors continuously provide position data for the moving rotor. A processing unit calculates a proper time delay from a source voltage peak in order to apply power to the next stator coil in the moving direction of the rotor such that no DC offshoot/undershoot occurs. The linear motor control system optionally includes a failure prevention switching scheme in which pairs of individual stator coils on opposite sides of a double-sided stator are switched together.

Linear position sensing system and coil switching methods for closed-loop control of large linear induction motor systems

A system and method for electromagnetically arresting an aircraft landing on an undersized runway, as on an aircraft carrier. The system preferably comprises a cross-deck pendant cable coupled to two purchase cables that are wound around low inertia purchase cable spools on opposite ends. The shafts of the purchase cable spools are mechanically coupled to one or more low inertia induction machines used to arrest the landing aircraft. As the aircraft contacts the cross-deck pendant cable and extends the purchase cables down the runway, power electronics in the system apply a torque based on closed-loop feedback to the induction machine acting as a generator, and the mechanical energy of the aircraft is converted to electrical energy at the generator and is dissipated as heat in an attached resistor. The one or more induction machines are preferably cup-type generators, and the generators may be briefly run as motors to initially reduce the tension on the purchase cables.

Electromagnetic aircraft arrestor system

A plurality of methods of analysis of images of eyes of a subject taken by a reflex photometer are disclosed. In this methods, a computer coupled to the reflex photometer is programmed to locate the pupil of at at least one eye, crop an image array containing the pupil from the total image and perform analyses on the cropped array to determine whether conditions are present indicative of disease processes in the eye. In essence, parameters of the subject eye are developed, and these subject pararmeters are compared to the same parameters developed by a normal eye. In addition, indications of strabismus are examined by comparing the area of the white portion of the eye on one side of the iris with the white portion on the other side of the iris.

Optical recognition methods for locating eyes

A multi-stranded superconducting coil includes compensation windings for use in detection of quenches in the coil. The compensation windings are formed as an integral part of the coil by co-winding a non-superconducting strand along with the superconducting strands in the cable manufacturing process. The non-superconducting strand is cut and electrically connected to the coil at selected locations.

Arrangement for detecting quenches in superconducting coils

A superconducting energy storage inductor having two D-shaped coils with their flat sides being adjacent and facing one another. The coils are restrained from moving relative to one another and are immersed in a cryogenic fluid. The coils are connected in series and when provided with current, the resulting magnetic fields of the coils oppose one another.

Energy storage inductor apparatus

An electromagnetic propulsion system based on an extremely low frequency (elf) radiating antenna structure driven by a matched high current pulsed power supply is described. The elf antenna structure resembles a modified three dimensional multiple-turn loop antenna whose geometry is optimized for the production of reaction thrust rather than the radiation of electromagnetic energy into space. The antenna structure is current driven rather than voltage drive. Rigid three dimensional geometric asymmetry, made up of flat electrical conductors that form a partially closed volume in the loop antenna structure, trap magnetic flux thereby causing a magnetic field density gradient along a single axis. This magnetic field density gradient then causes an imbalance in the magneto- mechanical forces that normally result from the interactions of the loop antenna's internal magnetic field with the current in the conductors of the loop antenna structure, as described by the Lorentz Force Law. The pulsed power supply is designed to provide the proper waveform to the antenna structure at an impedance matching the load impedance of the antenna. The rise time and shape of the input current waveform is crucial to maximizing the production of reaction thrust. Input voltage is at a nominal value sufficient to allow the desired high input current.

Nonlinear electromagnetic propulsion system and method

An electronic reflex game wherein one of a plurality of switches is manipulated by a player to deactuate one of a plurality of light bulbs. An actuation device randomly actuates one of three light bulbs. Three corresponding switches are situated below the lights wherein each switch deactuates the light above it. The actuation device includes a variable frequency oscillator which generates pulses to trigger one of three lights. The variable frequency oscillator also determines the amount of time within which the switches can deactuate the lights. Each time a correct switch is pressed during a limited time period, a counter indicates the correct hit and a new light is actuated at random. A timing device gradually increases the frequency of the variable frequency oscillator as the game progresses so the time period when a switch can deactuate the light gradually shortens as the game progresses. The random actuation of lighting continues until a light is not deactuated within the limited time period or when two switches are pressed simultaneously during the limited time period.

Electronic reflex game

A coordinate indicating and plotting system wherein compass heading signals are periodically integrated at frequencies related to the distance traveled by a water, air or land vehicle to obtain coordinate change signals for visual indication of vehicle coordinates. The coordinate change signals can be applied to a plotting system to record the path followed by the vehicle or applied to a counter to indicate the unit changes for the vehicle in each direction. Desirably, the compass heading signals are digitized by converting the heading signals into frequencies and the signals are integrated by summing the pulses for each output direction during each sampling period. A novel crescent-shaped opening whose width approximately follows a sine function between zero and 180.degree. is positioned angularly on the compass card about the center of rotation thereof. Linear light sources on one side of the card and photometric detectors positioned in alignment with the light sources on the other side of the card measure the light passing through the crescent-shaped opening to produce signals representative of the heading components of the vehicle in each direction.
