A grease formulation containing a thickener and a Fischer-Tropsch derived base oil, in particular a heavy or extra heavy base oil. The use of a Fischer-Tropsch oil results in an increase in thickener concentration and in improved properties such as anti-wear and copper corrosion performance. Also provided is the use of a Fischer-Tropsch derived base oil in a grease formulation, for the purpose of improving its anti-wear and/or copper corrosion performance, and/or for reducing the concentration of an additive in the formulation.

Grease formulations

The present invention provides a lubricating composition for use in the crankcase of an engine comprising a base oil and one or more additives, wherein the base oil comprises a Fischer-Tropsch derived base oil and wherein the lubricating composition has a kinematic viscosity at 100 C (according to ASTM D 445} of below 5.6 cSt and a Noack volatility (according to ASTM D 5800) of below 15 wt. %.

A functional fluid composition comprising a naphthenic bright stock base oil and a Fischer-Tropsch derived base oil, wherein the functional fluid composition has a Viscosity Index (according to ASTM D 2270) of above 95.

Functional fluid composition

Base oil formulation containing (i) a Fischer-Tropsch derived light base oil and (ii) a Fischer-Tropsch derived gas oil. The formulation can be prepared by back-blending a Fischer-Tropsch derived light base oil with a Fischer-Tropsch derived gas oil, for instance derived from the same Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. Also provided is the use of a Fischer-Tropsch derived gas oil in a base oil formulation containing a Fischer-Tropsch derived light base oil, for the purpose of improving the cold flow properties of the formulation while maintaining its flash point above a desired target value, and/or for the purpose of reducing the concentration of a cold flow additive in the formulation, preferably with less of a reduction in the flash point of the formulation than theory would have predicted to occur due to the incorporation of the Fischer-Tropsch derived gas oil.

Base oil formulations

Middle distillate fuel composition is provided containing (a) a middle distillate base fuel, in particular a diesel base fuel, and (b) a Fischer-Tropsch derived paraffinic base oil component with a viscosity of at least 8 mm/s at 100&#xb0; C. In component (b), the ratio of the percentage of epsilon methylene carbon atoms to the percentage of isopropyl carbon atoms is suitably 8.2 or below. Its pour point may be &#x2212;30&#xb0; C. or lower. Also disclosed is the use of a Fischer-Tropsch derived paraffinic heavy base oil in a middle distillate fuel composition, for the purpose of improving the cold flow properties of the composition and/or for reducing the concentration of a cold flow or flow improver additive in the composition.

Fuel compositions

The invention relates to a bright stock base oil blend comprising of a paraffinic base oil component having a viscosity at 100&#xb0; C. of from 8 to 25 mm^/sec and a residual and de-asphalted oil component, and the use of said blend as part of a gear oil or a cylinder oil formulation, and other uses.

A lubricant composition having a base oil and one or more additives wherein the lubricant composition has a kinematic viscosity at 100&#xb0; C. of more than 5.6 cSt; a cold cranking simulated dynamic viscosity at &#x2212;35&#xb0; C. according to ASTM D 5293 of less than 6200 centiPoise (cP); and, a mini rotary viscosity test value of less than 60000 cP according to ASTM D 4684, wherein the base oil has been obtained from a waxy paraffinic Fischer-Tropsch synthesized hydrocarbon.

A lubricating base oil composition having at least 95 wt % saturates, of which saturates fraction between 10 and 30 wt % are cyclo-paraffins and the remainder being n- and iso-paraffins, having a viscosity index of above 120 and a pour point of below &#x2212;15&#xb0; C.

The invention relates to a process to prepare a heavy and a light lubricating base oil from a partly isomerized Fischer-Tropsch derived feedstock, the feedstock having an initial boiling point of below 400&#xb0; C. and a final boiling point of above 600&#xb0; C. by (a) separating the fraction via distillation into a light base oil precursor fraction and a heavy base oil precursor fraction; (b) reducing the pour point of each separate base oil precursor fraction via dewaxing; and, (c) isolating the desired base oil products from the dewaxed oil fractions as obtained in step (b).
