The present disclosure generally relates to a tape drive comprising one or more tape head modules. Each tape head module comprises 65 data elements disposed in a first row, each data element being a write element or a read element, and at least 5 servo element pairs disposed in a second row, the second row being disposed parallel to the first row. The second row is spaced a distance in a first direction from the first row. One or more data elements and one or more servo element pairs may be unwired and non-operable. The tape drive may comprise three tape head modules, where the second tape head module is disposed between the first and third tape head modules. Each data element of the first tape head module and the third tape head module are write elements, and each data element of the second module is a read element.

The present disclosure generally relates to a tape and a tape drive comprising a tape head and a controller. The tape drive comprises a tape comprising three data bands and four servo tracks, a servo track of the four servo tracks being disposed between adjacent data bands, one or more tape head modules, each tape head module comprising a plurality of data elements and two or more servo element pairs, and a controller configured to control each of the one or more tape head modules to write data to and read data from the tape. The one or more servo heads each individually have a second stripe height extending from the MFS towards the back edge of the module. The second stripe height is about 10% to about 75% less than the first stripe height. By making the second stripe height less than the first stripe height, the area of the servo heads is reduced while the resistance of the sensors of the servo heads is increased.

Each data element of both the first and second data element arrays is coupled to two pads. The pads and the data element arrays of each chip are offset in a first direction such that the pads and data element arrays are offset from a central axis a distance about one-half the span of either the first or second data element array. Either the first data element array or the second data element arrays is centered upon the central axis.

A power supply is configured to apply a first electrical potential to the first and second shields, the side shields, and the second lead, and a second electrical potential to the first lead. The electrical design of each servo head is configured such that only one electric potential is exposed at the MFS, eliminating the possibility that a scratch will short the sensor.

A method, in accordance with one aspect of the present invention, includes forming various layers of a data read transducer structure and of a lower shield layer of a servo read transducer structure in an array with the data read transducer structure in common fabrication steps. The formed dielectric layers of both read transducer structures, coupled with the unique shield structure of the data read transducer structure, work in concert to provide robust resistance to asperity-induced shorting while also lower smaller read gap thickness.
