Provided is a photochromic film laminate including (a) a first polymeric film layer having a first surface and an opposing second surface; and (b) an adhesive layer over at least a portion of and in direct contact with the first surface of the first polymeric film layer (a). The adhesive layer is formed from a composition of a thermoplastic polyol having a number average molecular weight greater than or equal to 30,000 g/mol; a poly(anhydride); and a photochromic material. The thermoplastic polyol (i) is present in the composition in an amount greater than or equal to 60 percent by weight based on total combined weight of solids present in the thermoplastic polyol (i) and the poly(anhydride) (ii). Also provided is an optical article prepared with the photochromic film laminate.

A method of manufacturing an optical article () includes supplying a first coating composition (A) and supplying one or more additional coating compositions (B) to an ultrasonic discharge nozzle () of a coating apparatus (). At least one of the first coating composition (A) and the one or more additional coating compositions (B) is a photochromic coating composition. The method includes mixing the first coating composition and the one or more additional coating compositions at the ultrasonic discharge nozzle () of the coating apparatus (), and applying the mixture (C) of the first coating composition (A) and the one or more additional coating compositions (B) to at least a portion of the optical article () so as to provide a pattern () on the optical article upon exposure to actinic radiation. The mixture (C) of the first coating composition (A) and the one or more additional coating compositions (B) is applied from the ultrasonic discharge nozzle () as a controlled, predetermined pattern of atomized droplets.

Apparatus and method for precision coating of ophthalmic lenses with photochromic coatings

A method of making an optical article having a gradient tint and a gradient polarization. The method includes contacting one or more dye compositions including at least one of a dichroic dye, a photochromic-dichroic dye, or any combination thereof, with an optical element having a continuous coating including at least one alignment zone. At least a portion of the dye composition diffuses into the coating at a predetermined concentration gradient along at least a portion of the coating.

Method of making optical articles having gradient light influencing properties

An optical article that includes an optical element and an anisotropic coating layer formed over at least a portion of the optical element. The anisotropic coating layer can include a first light-influencing zone comprising at least one first anisotropic material and a second light-influencing zone comprising at least one second anisotropic material. Optical article with gradient light influencing properties and method of making the same

A method of producing an optical article includes applying an imbibition composition having at least one dye onto at least a portion of at least one imbibable surface () of a substrate () to form a coated substrate (). The method further includes irradiating at least a portion of the coated substrate with heat from a heat source () to form a heat gradient across the coated substrate () to diffuse the at least one dye into the imbibable surface to form an at least partially imbibed substrate having a dye concentration gradient corresponding to the heat gradient. The method further includes removing a residual component of the imbibition composition from the at least partially imbibed substrate. The dye concentration gradient forms a gradient pattern upon exposure to actinic radiation.

A method for imparting an optical element with at least one light influencing property in a gradient pattern. The method includes (a) providing an optical substrate having first and second surfaces; (b) depositing a first composition over the first surface of the optical substrate so as to provide a first treated surface region and an untreated surface region, the first composition including a material which provides a light influencing property; (c) depositing a second composition over the optical substrate of (b) to provide a second treated surface region over the untreated surface region and over a portion of the first treated surface region to form a first overlap region; and (d) spinning the optical substrate of (c) thereby providing the optical element having a light influencing property in a gradient pattern.

Method for imparting an optical element with a light influencing property in a gradient pattern

Provided is an oriented polymeric sheet comprising a photochromic-dichroic material, wherein the sheet exhibits dichroism in an activated state. Also provided is a multilayer composite comprising at least a support layer; and an oriented thermoplastic polymeric sheet having two opposing surfaces and comprising a photochromic-dichroic material. The sheet exhibits dichroism in an activated state. At least one surface of the sheet is connected to at least a portion of the support layer. The present invention also relates to an optical element comprising the multilayer composite. Related methods also are disclosed.

Oriented polymeric sheets exhibiting dichroism and articles containing the same

The invention provides a multi-layer experiential optical device including at least one polymeric layer having a first side and an opposing second side, and having a light-influencing property; and a low tack pressure sensitive adhesive layer applied on at least a peripheral zone of the second side of the polymeric layer. The experiential optical device is reversibly adherent to an optical lens.

The first photochromic-dichroic layer includes a first photochromic-dichroic compound that is laterally aligned within the first photochromic-dichroic layer, and which defines a first polarization axis of the first photochromic-dichroic layer. The second photochromic-dichroic layer includes a second photochromic-dichroic compound that is laterally aligned within the second photochromic-dichroic layer, and which defines a second polarization axis of the second photochromic-dichroic layer. The first polarization axis and the second polarization axis are oriented relative to each other at an angle of greater than 0&#xb0; and less than or equal to 90&#xb0;. The photochromic-dichroic articles can provide, for example, a combination of increased optical density and increased kinetics when exposed to a given amount of actinic radiation.
