An apparatus includes a fan having a fan housing with guidance members extending from opposing sides of the housing, wherein the fan housing has a depth that is less than a height and width. A handle is pivotably coupled to the fan housing, and guidance tracks are positioned on opposing sides of an open channel. Each of the guidance tracks has a first track portion extending from a first face of a chassis in a first direction into the chassis and a second track portion extending from the first track portion in a second direction. The guidance members move along the corresponding guidance tracks, wherein the fan housing moves along the first track portion in a sideways orientation and reaches an operating orientation in the second track portion.

Embodiments of the invention relate to a system and method to enable and support vertical installation of a rack server midplane. The system is comprised of two primary components, including a guide and a bracket. The guide is secured to a server chassis, and is sized to receive the bracket. Upon receipt of the bracket, the bracket is held in position by the guide. The bracket is configured to frictionally hold the midplane in position. Installation of the bracket with the midplane within the chassis includes a direct installation of the bracket to the guide and an indirect installation of the midplane to the guide.

Vertical installation of a server midplane

An apparatus with a specific connector configuration is disclosed. A system that includes the connector configuration of the apparatus is also disclosed. The apparatus includes a first connector having a first guide pin insertable into a first guide socket of a first mating connector. The first guide pin is blocked from being inserted into a second guide socket of a second mating connector. The second guide socket has a different shape than the first guide socket. The apparatus includes a second connector having a second guide pin with a different shape than the first guide pin. The second guide pin is insertable into the first guide socket of the first mating connector and insertable into the second guide socket of the second mating connector.

Mid-plane connector configuration

In a computer system, airflow through first and second cooling regions are normally separated by a chassis wall, and are independently controlled by respective first and second fan modules. The internal chassis wall includes a bypass opening that is normally blocked by the second fan module. In response to removal of the second fan module, the bypass opening is unblocked, to fluidly couple the two cooling regions. A redundant fan module is optionally included in fluid communication with the first cooling region, to either generate airflow through the first cooling region in response to failure or removal of the first fan module, or to supplement the airflow capacity of the first fan module in response to removal of the second fan module.

A method includes securing a midplane to a bracket disposed between a first and second ends of a chassis, wherein a first surface of the midplane engages the bracket and faces the first end of the chassis. A first electronic device is secured within the first end of the chassis with a first device connector coupled to a first midplane connector on the first surface of the midplane and a first device latch secured directly to a first slot in the chassis adjacent the first end. A sub-chassis is secured within the second end of the chassis, wherein the sub-chassis has a proximal end that engages a second surface of the midplane. Furthermore, a second electronic device is secured within the sub-chassis with a second device connector coupled to a second midplane connector on the second surface of the midplane and a second device latch secured directly to a slot in the sub-chassis adjacent the distal end of the sub-chassis.

Method of securing electronic devices within a sub-chassis

An apparatus comprises a chassis securing a midplane at a known distance from the first end of the chassis, wherein a first electronic device is securable within the first end of the chassis in connection with a midplane connector on a first surface of the midplane. A sub-chassis is receivable within the second end of the chassis with a proximal end of the sub-chassis engaging a second surface of the midplane. A distal end of the sub-chassis has a sub-chassis latch that secures the sub-chassis in the second end of the chassis with the proximal end engaged against the second surface of the midplane. A second electronic device is securable within the sub-chassis with a second device connector coupled to a midplane connector on the second surface of the midplane and a second device latch secured to a sub-chassis slot adjacent the distal end of the sub-chassis.

A method and circuit for implementing an enhanced availability personality card for a chassis computer system, and a design structure on which the subject circuit resides are provided. The personality card includes a first erasable programmable read only memory (EPROM) and a second EPROM, each EPROM storing Vital Product Data (VPD) and a first temperature sensor and a second temperature sensor sensing temperature. A primary bidirectional bus and a redundant bidirectional bus are respectively connected between the first EPROM and the first temperature sensor and the second EPROM and the second temperature sensor, and a pair of chassis management modules. Each chassis management module includes a switch connected to both the primary bidirectional bus and the redundant bidirectional bus providing redundant paths, enabling continued function with failure of any critical personality card component.

A system comprises a server chassis and first and second hard disk drive carriers, wherein each carrier supports a hard disk drive. A first hinge rotatably connects a distal end of the first hard disk drive carrier to a first side of the chassis, wherein the first hinge allows the carrier to rotate about a first hinge axis between an open position and a closed position. The first hard disk drive carrier rotates in a first plane between an open position extending beyond the front of the chassis and a closed position within the chassis. A second hinge rotatably connects a distal end of the second hard disk drive carrier to a second side of the chassis that opposite the first side of the chassis, wherein the hinge allows the carrier to rotate about a second hinge axis between an open position and a closed position. The second hard disk drive carrier rotates in a second plane between an open position extending beyond the front of the chassis and a closed position within the chassis, wherein the second plane is parallel to the first plane.

Rotating hard drive installation in a computer chassis

A low profile computer processor retention device, the computer processor including a processor substrate and a heat spreader mounted on the processor substrate. The retention device includes a retention housing. The retention housing is shaped to fit around a socket. The retention device also includes a load frame. The load frame is operatively coupled to the retention housing and is configured to retain the computer processor in the socket of a motherboard with direct contact between the load frame and the processor substrate. The load frame has a cutout. The retention device also includes a heat sink fastening member coupled to the retention housing and configured to fasten a heat sink to the retention housing and configured to couple the heat sink to the heat spreader through the cutout of the load frame.

Low profile computer processor retention device

An apparatus for positioning an electronics module in an equipment chassis with adequate pathways for the flow of cooling air across the module or across one or more adjacent modules, such as one or more blade server. The system includes an electronics module movably secured within a sub-assembly prior to installing the sub-assembly in a bay of a chassis. Ramps disposed within one or more bays of the chassis engage and position the electronics modules within the range of movement permitted by the sub-assembly when the sub-assembly has been installed in the chassis. Two bays having ramps positioned differently can receive the same sub-assembly or an identical sub-assembly and position the module differently. Therefore, the sub-assemblies are interchangeable while maintaining appropriate air flow pathways.

Apparatus for positioning electronic component modules within an equipment chassis

A system, method, and apparatus for distributing air in a blade server are disclosed. Embodiments may include a rotating damper having a damper door, sliding door, and connecting rod. The damper door may be rotatably attached to a blade server having a plurality of blade slots for receiving blades and may rotate between a blocking position and a flat position, where the damper door impedes air through a blade slot when in the blocking position. The sliding door may move between an open position and a closed position, where the sliding door allows airflow through an air opening while in the open position and blocks airflow through the air opening while in the closed position. A further embodiment may include an extension spring to apply a pulling force to the sliding door and a kick up spring to apply a pushing force to the damper door in the flat position.

Methods for distributing air in a blade server

A system, method, and apparatus for preventing exhaust backflow into a blower are disclosed. Embodiments may include a blower system with an invertible blower chassis having a blower exhaust to direct airflow from the blower chassis at an airflow angle. The system may also include a backflow damper frame attached to the blower chassis and positioned to receive airflow from the blower chassis and one or more vertical damper vanes rotatably attached to the backflow damper frame. Each damper vane may freely rotate between a first, closed position and a second, open position. The damper vanes may block airflow into the blower exhaust when in the closed position and may freely rotate to a position where the damper vanes are substantially parallel to the airflow from the blower exhaust. The damper vanes may each include a vane pin to rotatably attach to frame holes of the backflow damper frame.

System, method, and apparatus for distributing air in a blade server

A computer system includes a plurality of blade servers, a midplane, a supplemental midplane, and a peripheral device separate from the blade servers. The midplane includes a plurality of connectors connecting the midplane to the plurality of blade servers. The supplemental midplane is separate from the midplane and includes a body, a plurality of connectors, and a peripheral connector. The plurality of connectors are attached to the body and connect the supplemental midplane to the plurality of blade servers. The peripheral connector is attached to the body and connects the supplemental midplane to the peripheral device. The plurality of connectors of the supplemental midplane communicate with the peripheral connector of the supplemental midplane. The plurality of connectors of the supplemental midplane are configured to be removably connectable to the midplane.
