An imaging system for an object such as human or animal tissue applies acoustic vibrations localized in two or three dimensions and simultaneously illuminates the object with an illuminating electromagnetic wave. A transmitter or receiver is provided that has an antenna with at least one coil that surrounds an axis along which at least a portion of the acoustic vibration is output.

Investigation of physical properties of an object

An imaging system for an object such as human or animal tissue applies acoustic vibrations localized in two or three dimensions and simultaneously illuminates the object with an illuminating electromagnetic wave. The acoustic vibration comprises a carrier wave that is amplitude modulated by an AM waveform. The carrier wave is selected to provide the localization of the acoustic vibration, whereas the AM waveform includes a frequency component selected to provide a vibration of the object of greater magnitude than the carrier wave. To detect a Doppler component shifted by the frequency of said frequency component of the AM waveform, a signal processing apparatus comprises a phase locked-loop locked to the EM frequency, producing a frequency-demodulated signal comprising the set of the Doppler components, and a lock-in amplifier configured to extract a signal at a reference frequency equal to the frequency of a frequency component of the AM waveform.

Acousto-electromagnetic investigation of physical properties of an object

A common communications device comprising an array of near-field coupled resonant elements, the elements each comprising a coupling portion comprising a loop portion with free ends, the device being provided in combination with a data transmission unit and a data reception unit, each unit having a coupling portion, the units being arranged to communicate with one another by means of the coupling portion of each unit and the common communications device, the coupling portion of the data transmission unit comprising a resonant element comprising a loop portion arranged to be near-field coupled to the loop portion of a first resonant element of the device, the coupling portion of the data reception unit comprising a resonant element comprising a loop portion arranged to be near-field coupled to the loop portion of a second resonant element of the device not being the first resonant element.

Common communications device

An imaging system for an object such as human or animal tissue uses scattering of an illuminating electromagnetic wave by acoustic vibrations to generate a scattered electromagnetic wave including Doppler components shifted from the frequency of the illuminating electromagnetic wave by frequencies of the acoustic vibration and multiples thereof. An acoustic transducer apparatus applies acoustic vibrations localized in two or three dimensions in a plurality of regions. A transmitter simultaneously illuminates the object with an illuminating electromagnetic wave that has a frequency in the range from 100 MHz to 100 GHz, the vibration direction of the acoustic vibration having a component parallel to the propagation direction of the illuminating electromagnetic wave. A receiver receives the scattered electromagnetic wave. A signal processing apparatus derives characteristics of the Doppler components, and stores image data representing the derived characteristic.

A resonant assembly for identification of a buried asset comprising first and second resonant members each configured to resonate at a respective different resonant frequency when excited by an electromagnetic field. The resonant assembly is arranged to cause a near-field coupling of transmit and receive antenna of a detector at the first and second resonant frequencies such that identification of the resonant assembly is performed at least in part according to the frequencies of the coupling.

Resonant assembly, system and method for identification of a buried asset

A resonant radar reflector assembly comprising first and second reflector members (A,B), the first and second and reflector members each being configured to resonate at their respective resonant frequency when irradiated by radio frequency (RF) radiation of a corresponding frequency, wherein the first member has a portion (A) responsive to an electric field applied parallel to an electric polarization axis of the first member, the second member having a corresponding portion (B) responsive to an electric field applied parallel to a corresponding electric polarization axis of the second member, the first member also having a portion (A) responsive to a magnetic field applied parallel to a magnetic polarization axis of the first member, the second member having a corresponding portion (B) responsive to a magnetic field applied parallel to a corresponding magnetic polarization axis of the second member, the first and second members being arranged such that at least one electric or magnetic polarization axis of the first member is substantially not parallel to the corresponding electric or magnetic polarization axis of the second member.

Resonant reflector assembly and method

A tripolar antenna is described having at least two electromagnetic signal transmitting/receiving elements arranged such that their axes of signal transmission/reception sensitivity are not parallel, wherein said elements are provided on or at least partially in a substrate of dielectric material so portions of said at least two elements are coplanar and dielectrically isolated from one another. In a preferred arrangement, two dipoles are provided on the substrate in perpendicular orientation and in the plane containing of the surface of said dielectric material. Most preferably a further third element is provided so as to render the antenna tripolar, said third element comprising a first circular disk element secured to an upper surface of the dielectric material, and a second slightly larger circular disk element, concentrically positioned on the corresponding opposite and lower surface of the dielectric.

Planar tripolar antenna

An optical wireless local area network using line of sight optical links. The base station and terminal stations are provided with optical transceivers which include a transmitter array and detector array. The transmitter array consists of an array of resonant cavity light emitting diodes integrated using flip-chip technology with a CMOS driver circuit. The driver circuit includes constant bias, current peaking and charge extraction. The driver circuitry is compact and can be confined within a region underlying the corresponding light source. The detector array consists of an array of photo diodes, provided with sense circuitry consisting of a pre-amplifier and post-amplifier. The diodes and sense circuitry are also integrated using a flip-chip technique. The light emitter and the detector may include adaptive optical elements to steer and/or focus the light beams.

Solid state light detector

A vehicle positioning and tracking radar system includes a rotating antenna with a pair of spatially separated transmit feeds for simultaneously transmitting a pair of frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) electromagnetic signals having a first polarisation and a pair of spatially separated receive feeds for receiving an electromagnetic signal having a second polarisation, wherein the first and second polarisations are different from one another, such that the transmit feed and receive feed at the rotating antenna are isolated from each other; and a coded modulated transponder receives transmit signals from the rotating antenna with the first polarization and transmits a receive signal to the rotating antenna with the second polarization.

A wave device for supporting electromagnetic waves, the device including a first pair of inputs for setting up a first standing wave therebetween a second pair of inputs for setting up a second standing wave therebetween and positioned such that the input signal of each of the first and second pairs of inputs is unaffected by the other of the first and second pairs of inputs and an output positioned so as to receive power from both the first and second standing waves.

Degenerate mode combiner

A communications device such as a personal identity card is in the form of a badge or label worn on the outside of the wearer's clothing. The badge includes a first layer of a transparent material having an inner surface that is contoured with a retroreflecting repeating pattern. A second layer also of a transparent material has an inner surface with a reciprocating retroreflecting pattern. Sandwiched between the two layers is a layer of liquid crystal material the refractive index of which can be varied through the application of an electric field. When the refractive index of the layer is close to that of the first and second layers, incident radiation passes through the device with little scattering. However, as the refractive index of the layer is varied by application of an electric field, incident radiation is retroreflected from the contoured interface of the first layer with the layer. The communications device is capable of retroreflecting incident radiation and modulating the radiation, by altering the refractive index of the layer, so that the reflected beam is capable of delivering information to a receiver. In this way information can be delivered in a non-contact environment using a device that requires very little power to operate.
