An article having a thermal-spray coating thereon is prepared by thermally spraying a coating material onto a surface of a substrate article. The coated article is nondestructively tested by directing a transmitted ultrasonic signal into the coated article, receiving a received ultrasonic signal from the coated article, and evaluating a near-bondline region of the coated article located adjacent to the surface of the article using the received ultrasonic signal.

Method for preparing and ultrasonically testing a thermal-spray coated article

A multifunctional weld fixture is provided having a base receiving a component and a plurality of locator tabs disposed around its outer edge. A circumferential array of expansion feet are movably attached to the top surface of the base. A disk-shaped wedge is disposed in sliding engagement with the expansion feet. A cover supports a portion of the component and seals against the component to create an enclosed plenum. The same fixture may be used to expand the component to compensate for shrinkage after the weld is compete.

Weld fixture and method for repairing annular components

A method for restoring thickness to load-bearing components of gas turbine engines, and for repairing a honeycomb structured gas turbine engine component. A surface of the component such as the backing surface of a honeycomb component after honeycomb removal is roughened and cleaned. A selected build-up material is deposited onto the substrate by high velocity oxy-fuel deposition or low pressure plasma spray. The component is heat treated to enhance the bond between the deposited material particles, and between the deposited material and the substrate by diffusion.

Restoration of thickness to load-bearing gas turbine engine components

An improved seal design is provided for use in a gas turbine engine. A corrugated facing strip, with a reduced corrugation height, is attached to the exposed end faces of a seal land to reduce windage losses at the exposed end faces. The corrugated facing strip simplifies construction of the seal land and provides a low windage loss surface at seal end faces.
