Provided are octane enhancing additives and methods that improve a liquid fuel composition's octane rating. A liquid fuel composition may comprise a liquid fuel and an octane enhancing additive. The octane enhancing additive may comprise an indoline compound with a bicyclic ring structure, wherein the indoline compound comprises a six-membered aromatic ring and a five-membered aliphatic ring that share a carbon-carbon aromatic bond. The five-membered aliphatic ring may be heterocyclic and may comprise a nitrogen positioned in an alpha position to the six-membered aromatic ring.

Motor gasoline with improved octane and method of use

Methods are provided for treatment of kerosene/jet fuel boiling range fractions, such as previously qualified jet fuel fractions, to allow blending of the kerosene/jet fuel boiling range fractions to produce a jet fuel boiling range blend having a breakpoint that is equal to or greater than the breakpoint of at least one of the kerosene jet fuel boiling range fractions used to form the blend. The breakpoint of the jet fuel boiling range blend can be maintained by treating at least one of the component fractions of the blend and/or by treating the blend to reduce a nitrogen content. The reduced nitrogen content can correspond to a reduced content of total nitrogen and/or a reduced content of unexpected nitrogen compounds.

High temperature antioxidant additives and methods that improve a liquid fuel composition's thermal oxidative stability are disclosed. A liquid fuel composition may comprise a liquid fuel and a high temperature antioxidant additive. The high temperature antioxidant additive may comprise an aromatic carbocyclic ring that is monocyclic and comprises substituents comprising a hydroxyl group and an iminomethyl group positioned in an ortho relationship.

Methods are provided for characterizing the stability of a distillate fraction using a quartz crystal microbalance apparatus, such as a distillate fraction derived at least in part from a pre-refined crude oil. A sample can be aged for an aging period in a quartz crystal microbalance apparatus, and a frequency value for the sample in the quartz crystal microbalance apparatus can be determined before and after the aging period to determine a frequency difference. This frequency difference can be correlated directly with the ability of a jet fuel fraction to satisfy a stability test standard, such as a jet fuel breakpoint stability. The methods can also include using a temperature profile during characterization that can reduce or minimize operator error during the characterization.
