Representative embodiments disclose mechanisms to improve the perceived responsiveness of a search engine. As a user types a query prefix into a browser or other interface to the search engine, the search engine returns query completion suggestions to the browser. The query completion suggestions, user history, user favorites and/or other information are presented to a trained machine learning model on the client device to predict a desired location that the user is attempting to navigate to. When the confidence level of the predicted location surpasses a threshold, content from the desired location is preloaded into a hidden tab in the browser. When the user submits a query, the browser submits feedback to a system responsible for updating and refining the machine learning model. Updated machine learning model coefficients can be received by the browser from the system to make predictions more accurate.

A service maintains information regarding one or more aspects of Web content, such as Web pages, that can be accessed by a computing device. The same service or a different service (e.g., a digital assistant) also maintains information regarding the user of the computing device. When a user navigates to Web content using a Web application, such as a Web browser, the services are accessed to obtain information regarding the Web content navigated to, information regarding the user, and/or user selectable tasks or actions. The Web application displays the obtained information to the user along with the Web content. The Web application displays the obtained information without altering the obtained Web content. Optionally, the Web application displays an indication that additional information regarding the Web content is available, and displays the obtained information (e.g., automatically or in response to receiving a user input request to display that additional information).

Browser storage management techniques are described. In one or more implementations, inputs are received at a computing device that specify maximum aggregate sizes of application and database caches, respectively, of browser storage to be used to locally store data at the computing device. For example, the inputs may be provided using a policy, by an administrator of the computing device, and so on. The maximum aggregate sizes are set of application and database caches, respectively, of browser storage at the computing device to the sizes specified by the inputs.

An edit control permits user modification of metadata values displayed in the window. The user can modify metadata associated with a welcome pane, a selected item, or multiple selected items. A system and method utilizing virtual folders. The virtual folders expose regular files and folders to users in different views based on their metadata instead of the actual physical underlying file system structure on the disk. The virtual folders contain collections of items. The system includes a folder processor that obtains queries from a user and a relational database for storing information about the items. The folder processor first obtains a query from a user and passes the query to the relational database. The relational database provides results back to the folder processor, and based on the results from the relational database, the folder processor provides the results to the user as virtual folders. Users are able to work with the virtual folders through direct manipulation (e.g., clicking and dragging, copying, pasting, etc.).

A system and method for presenting a plurality of items to a user with a contextual display. A computer system is provided which includes a data store. At least a portion of the items in the data store include one or more field entries. An explorer interacts with the data store, selects items having one or more desired field entries, and displays the selected items according to an explorer display schema. A system and method for filtering and organizing items from computer memories based on common elements. In accordance with one aspect of the invention, filters are provided for manipulating the items. The filters are essentially tools for narrowing down a set of items. In one embodiment, the filters are dynamically generated based on the properties of the separate items. The system utilizes virtual folders. The virtual folders expose regular files and folders to users in different views based on their metadata instead of the actual physical underlying file system structure on the disk. In accordance with another aspect of the invention, quick links are provided. In one embodiment, quick links are a set of predefined links (e.g., located on the left side of the display) that can be clicked on to generate useful views of the sets of items. The present invention is directed to a method and system for use on a computer for uploading information from a client to a server by describing on the client side, a text file which identifies and describes files to be uploaded, along with other information to be passed between both systems. The present invention further allows the destination to refine the contents of the text file, to identify the files that the server requires, or to further specify how to transform any other related data. The source, client is then able to read this refined information and accordingly upload information to the server.
