A magnetically geared apparatus comprising a rotor, the rotor comprising: a ring structure; and at least one pole piece mounted relative to the ring structure; wherein at least a portion of the ring structure forms a continuous ring radially inner to the at least one pole piece, wherein the at least one pole piece is received in a pole piece-receiving portion, the pole piece receiving portion being open at a radially outer end.

Magnetically geared apparatus

A magnetically geared apparatus that includes a first rotor and a stator. The stator can include windings and a first plurality of permanent magnets, where the first plurality of permanent magnets are located between the windings and the first rotor. The stator can also include un-magnetized magnetisable material between circumferentially juxtaposed permanent magnets of the first plurality of permanent magnets.

A magnetically geared apparatus (), a pole piece component () and a plurality of pole pieces () for such apparatus are disclosed. A propulsion device for a marine vessel, the propulsion device comprising an electrical machine with integral magnetic gearing, which comprises three members, namely a first or inner rotor comprising a first plurality of permanent magnets, a second rotor in the form of a plurality of ferromagnetic pole pieces, and a stator which is associated with a plurality of 3-phase windings and to the periphery of which a plurality of second permanent magnets are fixed. The magnetic pole piece rotor is connected to a drive shaft provided with a propulsion means for providing propulsion to the marine vessel. The first or inner rotor is free to rotate about the drive shaft. The pole pieces of the second rotor are arranged to magnetically couple the permanent magnets of the first or inner rotor to the second permanent magnets on the stator.

Electric marine propulsion device with integral magnetic gearing

A flux-switching machine stator comprising two or more C-cores, each C-core having two legs and a back portion joining the legs, and a permanent magnet arranged between legs of adjacent C-cores. Cooling arrangement of an electrical machine

Electrical machine arrangements have advantages with regard to providing local electrical power and starting. Embedding such electrical machine arrangements in machinery such as gas turbine engines is advantageous in removing mechanical linkages and reducing aerodynamic drag. However, the components utilized must be able to withstand harsh environmental conditions and therefore the DC link capacitor used for smoothing of voltage fluctuations are limited to relatively low capacitance densities. Low density DC link capacitors require large sizes which render electrical machines less acceptable for embedded usage. By providing offset of electrical current in inductance elements such as stator windings and stator coils of electrical machines in dead periods of the cycle a reduction in DC link capacitor requirements is achieved reducing the size, weight and complexity of installing electrical machines in gas turbine engines.
