A top-emitting subpixel structure may include at least one bank structure defining a plurality of emissive areas, and an emissive structure located in each emissive area. The subpixel structure may have a subpixel length and a subpixel width less than the subpixel length, a ratio of the subpixel length to the subpixel width defining a subpixel aspect ratio. Each emissive area may have an emissive area length and an emissive area width shorter than the emissive area length, a ratio of the emissive area length to the emissive area width defining an emissive area aspect ratio. The subpixel length may define a primary axis when the subpixel aspect ratio is greater than the emissive area aspect ratio; otherwise, the emissive area length may define the primary axis. At least a majority of the emissive areas may be arranged successively widthwise along a secondary axis perpendicular to the primary axis.

Display subpixels having multiple emissive areas with high aspect ratios

A light-emitting structure includes a substrate, a sub-pixel stack over a surface of the substrate, and a bank including a first bank portion and a second bank portion. The sub-pixel stack has an emissive stack including an emissive layer between a first transport layer and a second transport layer, a first electrode layer coupled to the first transport layer, and a second electrode layer coupled to the second transport layer. The second bank portion is between the first bank portion and the sub-pixel stack, and the bank surrounding at least the emissive stack and the first electrode layer forms an interior space above the sub-pixel stack.

Dual bank structure for improved extraction from an emissive layer

A light emitting structure comprises a substrate, a sub-pixel stack over a surface of the substrate, a bank surrounding the sub-pixel stack and forming an interior space above the sub-pixel stack, a first material filling the interior space and having a first refractive index, and a second material over the first material and having a second refractive index substantially higher than the first refractive index. The sub-pixel stack comprises an emissive layer between a first transport layer and a second transport layer, a first electrode layer coupled to the first transport layer, and a second electrode layer coupled to the second transport layer. A light emitting structure includes a pixel layer having at least one subpixel, a microlens layer having at least one microlens, the at least one microlens aligned with the at least one subpixel for providing a narrowly-confined on-axis emission profile along an on-axis direction, a first filler material layer and a second filler material layer between the pixel layer and the microlens layer, an interface between the first filler material layer and the second filler material layer configured for reflecting a portion of off-axis emissions from the at least one subpixel by total internal reflection (TIR).

A composite lens system may include one or more first optical elements configured to provide a first focal length selected from a first continuous range of focal lengths, as well as one or more second optical elements configured to provide a discrete focal length selected from a plurality of discrete focal lengths. The one or more first optical elements and the one or more second optical elements may be configured in series such that the composite lens system provides an output focal length based on a combination of the selected first focal length and the selected discrete focal length.

A light-emitting structure includes a substrate, a sub-pixel stack, a cover layer over the sub-pixel stack, and at least one interface between the substrate and the cover layer. The at least one interface has an interface roughness. The sub-pixel stack includes an emissive layer between a first transport layer and a second transport layer, a first electrode layer coupled to the first transport layer, and a second electrode layer coupled to the second transport layer. The sub-pixel stack is over the substrate and configured to emit light including a scattering component caused by the interface roughness and a cavity component separate from the scattering component. A ratio of a luminance of the scattering component to a luminance of the cavity component increases with a viewing angle relative to a display normal. An optical power of the scattering component is a fraction of an optical power of the cavity component.

Layered light-emitting structure with roughened interface

An optical system and, specifically an HMD, is disclosed for increasing brightness efficiency of light transmitted from a display. By including one polarization selective mirror between a half mirror and a display and another polarization selective mirror between the half mirror and a lens, brightness efficiency is increased without a substantial increase in thickness.

A wide field of view display includes a curved display device; a first curved lens having a display side and an exit side, wherein the display side is facing the curved display device; a first plurality of Fresnel facets disposed on the display side of the first curved lens; a second curved lens having a display side and an exit side, wherein the display side is facing the exit side of the first curved lens; and a second plurality of Fresnel facets disposed on the display side of the second curved lens, wherein the first plurality of Fresnel facets is configured to focus light from the curved display device on the second plurality of Fresnel facets, and wherein the second plurality of Fresnel facets is configured to focus light from the first plurality of Fresnel facets on a central image point.

Compact high field of view display

An LCD apparatus includes a first substrate and a second substrate. A first TFT array is deposited on the first substrate. A first array of drive electrodes is also deposited on the first substrate. A second TFT array is deposited on the second substrate. A second array of drive electrodes is deposited on the second substrate. The first TFT array, the second TFT array, the first array of drive electrodes and the second array of drive electrodes are configured to enable pixels or sub-pixels of the LCD apparatus to modulate light. The first TFT array may at least partially overlap the second TFT array, and the first array of drive electrodes may at least partially overlap the second array of drive electrodes, from an LCD viewing perspective.

Display with two thin film transistor substrates

A light emitting structure comprises a substrate, a plurality of sub-pixel stacks over the substrate emitting different colors, a bank surrounding the sub-pixel stacks and forming an interior space above the sub-pixel stacks, a first filler material in the interior space, a second filler material over the first filler material, and an interface between the first filler material and the second filler material. Each of the sub-pixel stacks including an emissive layer between a first transport layer and a second transport layer, a first electrode layer coupled to the first transport layer, and a second electrode layer coupled to the second transport layer. Each of the sub-pixel stacks emits a main emission peak at one direction normal to a top surface of each of the sub-pixel stacks through the interface.

High on-axis brightness and low colour shift QD-LED pixel with equal layer thicknesses between colour pixels

A light-emitting layer structure that maximizes constructive interference for light emission by varying a phase shift introduced by reflective electrodes. The light-emitting layer structure includes a first and second optical cavity including a first and second reflective electrode; a first and second partially transparent electrode; and a first and second emissive layer (EML) disposed between the first and second reflective electrodes and the first and second partially transparent electrodes, wherein the first EML emits light having a first wavelength; wherein the first reflective electrode introduces a first phase shift, depending on the first wavelength, on reflection of light emitted by the first EML; and wherein the second EML emits light having a second wavelength and the second reflective electrode introduces a second phase shift, depending on the second wavelength, on reflection of light emitted by the second EML, and the first phase shift is different from the second phase shift.

High-efficiency QLED structures

A head-mounted display (HMD) has an enhanced optical arrangement that permits high-resolution imaging in a compact device. The HMD system includes an optical arrangement; a first image panel, wherein the optical arrangement directs image light from the first image panel along a first optical pathway having a first length; and a second image panel arranged orthogonal to the first image panel, wherein the optical arrangement directs image light from the second image panel along a second optical pathway different from the first optical pathway having a second length. The first length is equal to the second length, and the optical arrangement is configured such that light from the first image panel and the second image panel are emitted from the HMD system in a combined fashion in a first eye direction. The optical arrangement may include a plurality of mirror components and a plurality of lens components, wherein the plurality of mirror components are configured to direct image light from the first and second image panels along respective optical pathways to the plurality of lens components.

Compact head-mounted display system with orthogonal panels

A light emitting structure comprises a bank surrounding a sub-pixel stack on a substrate, a first filler material in an interior space above the sub-pixel stack, and a second filler material over the first filler material. The sub-pixel stack emits a first emission peak along an on-axis direction substantially normal to a top surface of the sub-pixel stack and through an interface between the first and second filler materials. The sub-pixel stack emits a second emission peak along an off-axis direction that is totally internally reflected by the interface before reaching a sloped sidewall of the bank and is then emitted along the on-axis direction. An emissive area of the sub-pixel stack is configured such that the second emission peak is reflected by the interface not more than once before reaching the sloped sidewall.

Multiple QD-LED sub-pixels for high on-axis brightness and low colour shift

A light emitting structure comprises a substrate, a sub-pixel stack over a surface of the substrate, and a bank surrounding the sub-pixel stack on the substrate. The light emitting structure also comprises a first filler material in the interior space, and a second filler material over the first filler material. The sub-pixel stack emits a first emission peak along an on-axis direction substantially normal to a top surface of the stack and emits a second emission peak along an off-axis direction at an angle to the on-axis direction. The first emission peak is emitted through an interface between the first filler material and the second filler material substantially without total internal reflection. The second emission peak is totally internally reflected by the interface before reaching a sloped sidewall of the bank and is emitted along the on-axis direction.

High on-axis brightness and low color shift QD-LED pixel

A light-emitting device has enhanced light output by employing a reflective optical cavity along the bank structure to improve light extraction. The light-emitting device includes a bank structure; an emissive cavity disposed within the bank structure; a filler material layer disposed within the bank structure and on a light-emitting side of the emissive cavity; and a reflective optical cavity disposed along an inner surface of the bank structure facing the filler material layer. The reflective optical cavity is configured to out-couple light that is internally reflected by an emitting side surface of the filler material layer and is incident on the reflective optical cavity. The reflective optical cavity incudes a first conductive layer and a second conductive layer that are separated by a non-conductive dielectric layer. The first conductive layer is disposed against the inner surface of the bank structure, and the second conductive layer is disposed against the filler material layer opposite from the inner surface of the bank structure. The emissive cavity includes an emissive layer disposed between a first electrode layer and a second electrode layer, and the first conductive layer may be configured as an extension of the first electrode layer and the second conductive layer may be configured as an extension of the second electrode layer.
