An optical scanning system includes one or more Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) Micro-Mirror Arrays (MMAs) used to scan a field-of-view (FOV) over a field-of-regard (FOR). The MEMS MMA is configured such that optical radiation from each point in the FOV does not land on or originate from out-of-phase mirror segments and a diffraction limited resolution of the optical system is limited by the size of the entrance pupil and not by the size of individual mirrors.

Optical scanning system using micro-electro-mechanical system (mems) micro-mirror arrays (MMAs)

Examples are directed to an approach to specifying design guidelines for fabricating a free-form optical component, and methods of fabricating the free-form optical components. In one example, a family of optical prescriptions is created, and a fabricator may manufacture the free-form optical element to any selected prescription within the family. According to certain examples, the series of prescriptions in the family each describe a very similar optical surface providing the same or similar optical performance, and are layered relative to one another such that the thickness of the optical element at any point is slightly less for each subsequent surface defined by the next prescription in the series.

Methods and apparatus for generating free-form optical components

An ultra-wide band (UWB) radio frequency (RF)/optical aperture includes a substrate having a plurality of regions. The plurality of regions may have varying characteristics and properties. In some embodiments, the plurality of regions includes a first region having a first relative dielectric constant and being transparent to signals having a frequency in a first frequency range, a second region contained in the first region and having a second relative dielectric constant and being transparent to signals having a frequency in a second frequency range, and a third region contained within the second region and having a third relative dielectric constant and being transparent to signals having a frequency in a third frequency range.

Ultra-wideband RF/optical aperture

A thermal detection system for detecting a thermal profile of an optical window may be used in an airborne body that contains a sensor system. The system may include a thermal imager arranged within the airborne body for imaging a portion of the optical window and the portion may coincide with an optical path of the sensor system. The system may further include a processor in communication with the thermal imager for receiving images of the portion and determining a thermal gradient of the portion. The processor may be configured to apply corrections to active optical elements of the sensor system to accommodate for adverse thermal effects on the optical sensor that interferes with the sensor system performance.

Real time correction of optical window thermal gradients

A compact transducer system includes both an antenna subsystem and an optical transducer subsystem. The antenna subsystem may include multiple radio frequency (RF) radiating elements disposed adjacent to a ground plane. The ground plane may also serve as an optical reflector within an optical path of the optical transducer subsystem. A secondary reflector may also be provided within the optical path of the optical transducer subsystem. The secondary reflector may be formed of dielectric material (e.g., meta-material) in some embodiments to prevent undesired coupling with RF circuitry.

Wideband antenna structure with optics reflector as ground plane and associated methods

A radio frequency (RF) module having a plurality of channels includes a heat sink having at least one tapered edge; a substrate disposed over a surface of the heat sink such that the tapered edge of the heat sink extends past a boundary of the substrate. RF, logic and power circuitry is disposed on the substrate and one or more RF signal ports are formed on an edge of the substrate to allow the RF module to be used in an array antenna having a brick architecture. The tapered edge heat sink provides both a ground plane for RF signal components and a thermal path for heat generating circuits disposed in the substrate.

UWB and IR/optical feed circuit and related techniques

An offset aperture two-axis gimbaled optical system comprises a two-axis gimbal and an optics assembly that is mounted on the inner gimbal and offset radially from the rotation axis of the outer gimbal. The optics assembly is suitably offset so that its optical aperture does not overlap the rotation axis of the outer gimbal and its optical aperture is symmetric about the rotation axis of the inner gimbal. In different applications, the offset aperture provides for reduced optical aberrations and improved utilization of the available packaging volume to accommodate multiple offset aperture optics assemblies.

Offset aperture dual-gimbaled optical system

An offset aperture gimbaled optical system comprises a gimbal and an optics assembly that is mounted on an inner gimbal and offset radially from an axis of symmetry (and rotation axis) of a conformal dome. An optical corrector adjacent the inner surface of the conformal dome encompasses the field-of-view of the optics assembly as the inner gimbal rotates about its rotation axis. The corrector is fixed with respect to the inner gimbal's rotation axis while it rotates about the axis of symmetry. The optical corrector comprises an aspheric transparent arch having an optical corrector shape and position responsive to a shape of the conformal dome at the offset position of the optics assembly. In different applications, the offset aperture provides for reduced optical aberrations and improved utilization of the available packaging volume to accommodate multiple offset aperture optics assemblies.

An electrical weapon system includes a power supply; a control electronics connected to the power supply; and an electrode pair, wherein the control electronics are configured to deliver a voltage having a determined voltage level and modulation across the electrode pair based on the electrode pair coming into contact with a target, and wherein the electrode pair is integrated into clothing or equipment of a user.

Electrical weapon system

A missile includes a radar system that has a radome through which a main antenna sends and receives signals. The radome includes a radome body and a radome tip include different transmissive materials, with for example the radome body primarily made of a lossy optically nontransparent material, and the radome tip primarily made of a lossless (permittivity with low imaginary part) glass material that may also be optically transparent. A laser may be used in conjunction with the radome to send and receive encoded signals. The laser may be located behind (aft of) the main antenna, and one or more optical fibers may extend into and/or along the radome to guide laser signals to the radome tip. The laser may be used to emit encoded signals so as to allow multiple radar systems operating in the same area at the same time to discriminate between different targets.

Antenna/optics system and method

Asymmetric rotating stray light baffles are provided for conformal dome two-axis seekers having arch corrector optics mounted on the outer gimbal. A pair of side skirt baffles are mounted on opposite sides of the arch corrector optics on the outer gimbal extending forward beyond the transparent arch adjacent but not touching the inner surface of the dome and extending aft beyond the forward most receiver optic for all fields of regard (FOR). The optical system may also include: (a) an annular objective baffle mounted on and around the receiver optics on the inner gimbal and between the pair of side skirt baffles, the objective baffle extending forward of the receiver optics without interfering with the receiver optics' FOV and without interfering with the transparent arch as the inner gimbal rotates, (b) a plurality of fin baffles mounted between the side skirt baffles on the outer gimbal that extend forward adjacent but not touching the inner surface of the dome and aft of the transparent arch, each fin baffle positioned to reduce the cross-section seen by the receiver optic when rotated in the direction of that fin baffle and (c) central baffles (short or long) along the axis of symmetry that obscure a portion of the receiver optics' FOV at a zero degree angle of rotation about the second axis.

Stray light baffles for a conformal dome with arch corrector optics

A missile radar system includes a tapered radome covering a front face of a main antenna. A calibration antenna is the combination of a metal tip and an attached one or more radiating or excitation elements (monopole) on the tip. A narrow end (wedge) of the radome may aid in directing planar calibration waves toward the main antenna. The metal tip has a curved inner surface that acts, with the attached radiating element(s), as an aperture antenna. Signals are emitted from the calibration antenna back toward the front face of the main antenna. The signals pass from the tip/reflector to the front face of the main antenna through a substantially-metal-free and substantially-dielectric-free volume defined by the inner surface of the radome. The radar system allows for calibration of the antenna prior to launch and/or during flight of the missile.

Dynamic calibration radar system

A control mechanism pins an optical fiber assembly on and off gimbal and between gimbals to route the assembly from an off-gimbal optical source across the gimbal axis/axes to an on-gimbal optical element so that the fiber assembly moves with the rotation of the gimbals. To accommodate a relatively large range of motion, the control mechanism is suitably configured to route the fiber assembly in a 'U-shaped' loop with one end pinned off-gimbal in a stationary guide track and the other end pinned on-gimbal point in a rotating guide track so that the loose fiber assembly is constrained in the concentric tracks on and off gimbal. As the gimbal rotates, the loop seats onto one guiding track and peels off of the other guiding track while always maintaining its U shape. To accommodate a relatively small range of motion in other gimbal configurations, the control mechanism is suitably configured to pin one end of the fiber assembly off-gimbal and pass the fiber assembly directly over the gimbal where it is pinned on the other side of the gimbal. In a multi-gimbal pointer, the fiber assembly preferably exhibits different mechanical stresses as it crosses the different gimbals.

A radio-frequency-device test range (the Refractive Compact Range) includes a physical space having a source zone for placing an antenna or array of antennas, and a test zone for placing a sensor or other device to be tested. A lens and an apodizer are placed in the physical space between the source zone and the test zone. The lens serves to collimate radiated energy emanating from the antenna toward the test zone. The lens may have a surface treatment, such as an anti-reflective coating or a surface pattern, on one or both surfaces. The apodizer functions to keep energy from diffracting off the edge of the lens and getting into the field of view (the test zone). The sensor or other device to be tested may be placed on a moveable mount to allow it to be moved, to simulate relative movement of the device and a radio frequency source, such as radiated by an antenna.
