Methods, systems, and computer program products are provided that automatically scale an application between private and public cloud computing platforms, while simultaneous enforcing policies ensuring private data is persistently stored on the private cloud computing platform, but not the public cloud computing platform. A traffic manager on the public platform routes traffic to instances of a web app executing on a private platform. A traffic monitor on the private platform monitors performance criteria of the private platform, and reports traffic telemetry to the traffic manager. Based on the traffic telemetry, the traffic manager may instantiate one or more instances of the web app on the public platform to handle traffic. Private data gathered by such instantiated instance(s) is persisted to storage in the private platform, but not in the public platform.

Automatic application scaling between private and public cloud platforms

A method includes acts for establishing a subscription for an entity. The method includes receiving, at a cloud service provider, a request from an entity to establish a subscription. The request includes credentials for the entity that are not proper credentials for an organization associated with the entity that the entity should use to access services for the organization. The method further includes performing a corrective action based on detecting one or more factors to determine that the entity is associated with the organization. The method further includes providing services based on the corrective action.

Multi cloud policy enactment via organizations to cloud-provider partnerships

Embodiments described herein are directed to reinitiating an application on a target computing cloud and to evaluating potential target cloud computing systems. In one scenario, a computing system receives an indication that identifies a target cloud for application migration. The target cloud computing system includes a specified set of hardware and/or environment specifications, associated configuration settings and an assigned rating that indicates how well the application will perform on the target cloud computing system. The computing system determines that the application is to be reconfigured for compatibility with the target cloud computing system and reconfigures some or all of the application to comply with the hardware and/or environment specifications and configuration settings of the target cloud computing system. The computing system also identifies and transfers specified portions of the application to the target cloud, and indicates that the application is to be re-instantiated using the transferred application portions.

Application migration between clouds

Embodiments are directed to bursting application portions to different types of cloud computing systems, managing distributed applications distributed over a plurality of different cloud types and to creating a cloud bursting target in a specified cloud. In one scenario, a computer system provides an indication of available cloud computing systems including at least a first and a second cloud computing system of different types. The computer system receives a selection indicating that a portion of a software application currently hosted on the first cloud computing system of the first type is to be bursted onto the second cloud computing system. The computer system then, in response to the selection, bursts the software application portion from the first cloud computing system of the first type to the second cloud computing system of the second, different type.

Cloud bursting and management of cloud-bursted applications

A workflow design system provides user interface controls that allow a workflow author to focus on the steps of the workflow before deciding on how to control the flow of the workflow. With the system, an author can change the control flow of a workflow without re-ordering the sequence of steps within the workflow. The workflow design system allows the author to define a sequence of steps and then drag a control block over these steps to capture them within the control block. The author can also later remove the control block without affecting the sequence of steps if his needs change. In addition, the system presents error-handling workflows side-by-side with the main workflow, so that the author can modify the main workflow and notice the effects and any corresponding changes for error handling workflows at the same time.

Simplified user controls for authoring workflows

Embodiments are directed to providing a structural diagram to collect user input data in a non-linear manner and to managing multiple distributed application models using a structural diagram. In one scenario, a computer system receives a user input specifying a distributed software application that is to be managed across various different computer systems. The computer system determines, based the specified distributed application, which nodes are to be displayed in a structural diagram, where the nodes of the structural diagram represent application properties for managing the specified distributed software application. The computer system then provides a structural diagram that displays the determined nodes. The nodes allow non-linear configuration of the specified application across the various computer systems.

Managing distributed applications using structural diagrams

Aspects of the subject matter described herein relate to model based application management. In aspects, models are defined that include structural and behavioral characteristics, rules, relations, and so forth between entities of an application. An instruction regarding a management function is received. The models are used to generate actions that when executed manage the application in accordance with the instruction.

Model based distributed application management

Described is a technology by which logged events such as in a security event log (e.g., within a defined timeframe) are processed to determine logon times and logoff times, which are then used to determine system usage. Logoff times may correspond to an actual logoff event, a shutdown event, or another login. In one example, logon and logoff times determine the combined times that each user of the system was logged on, e.g., a total session time for each user. Multiple users' times may be combined into a total usage time of all users. Each user's combined session time may be evaluated against the total usage time to determine whether any user is a primary user, e.g., by being logged on more than a threshold percentage of the total usage time. A primary user may be identified, or the system determined to be a shared system without a primary user.

Determining computer system usage from logged events

Described is a technology by which directly ascertainable properties of a processor are collected, and used as a key to access other information about the processor, such as age-related information maintained in a separate lookup table. If a matching entry is not found, the property information may be added to an unknown list and/or used to dynamically update the lookup table. A data structure such as a record comprises a set of fields including fields containing data representative of properties of a processor, a key value determined from the data in at least some of the fields and an identifier that identifies the processor relative to other processors of other computing devices. The fields may include manufacturer data, brand identifier data, cache information, normalized processor speed data, mobile chip information and/or CPU model data.

Determining computer information from processor properties

A method for updating a catalog of hardware device and software object identifiers by identifying unknown identifiers and categorizing each of the unknown identifiers. The method further provides the categorized identifiers to a community of users for review and receives comments from the community of users on the provided categorization. The method further determines if the categorized identifiers should be recategorized based upon the received comments. Another method performs a search for an entity associated with an unknown identifier, determines a likely entity associated with the unknown identifier, and verifies the correctness of such determined likely entity. Another method generates a catalog of computer system components, receives information regarding the identity of a computer system component from at least two different sources, and determines the identity of the computer system component based upon the reputation of the sources of the received information.
