A self-illuminating solid-state color image capture device, includes: an array of light emitting elements and light sensing elements formed on a common substrate; the light emitting elements including first color elements adapted to emit light of a first color and second color elements adapted to emit light of a second color, and the light sensing elements being responsive to all emitted colors; and electronics coupled to the light emitting and light sensing elements for sequentially causing the first and second color elements to emit light and sensing the light reflected from a scene being captured with the light sensing elements.

A method of manufacturing a display module, including the steps of: providing a substrate; and forming on the substrate using the same manufacturing process an image display having an array of addressable display pixels and pixel driver circuitry responsive to control signals and image data for driving the pixels; and a digital signal processing circuit having an input interface over which image data and control signals are received; a frame buffer for storing image data and from which image data is read during a display refresh; a display matrix driver circuit for receiving image data from the frame buffer and supplies control signals to the pixel driver circuitry; a control circuit for coordinating storage, retrieval, and display operations, such that the display module is capable of display refresh independently of external control; and an image processing circuit for improving the visual perception of the displayed image.

System for integrating digital control with common substrate display devices

A mulitchannel optical waveguide page scanner has a diode laser and a primary optical channel waveguide. Light is coupled from the diode into the primary channel waveguide. Multiple secondary side channels each have a thin-film electro-optic waveguide modulator. A series of T-branch connectors distribute light from the primary channel to the secondary side channels. Each of the electro-optic waveguide modulators is addressable individually.

A fully integrated electro-optic page-scanner comprises an optically-transparent waveguide made from an electro-optic polymer formed as a Langmuir-Blodgett film, and a linear array of electrically-addressable, spaced, parallel electrodes for selectively altering the refractive index across pixel-sized portions of the polymeric waveguide. Parallel addressing of the electrodes in accordance with the intensity pattern of a line of pixels to be recorded acts to modulate the phase front of an optical wave propagating within the waveguide in accordance with such line intensity pattern. Schlieren optics, also integrated with the page-scanner, convert the phase-front-modulated wave to an intensity-modulated pixel pattern which can be imaged onto a moving photosensitive recording element to record a two-dimensional (page) of image information. By using an electro-optic polymer formed as a Langmuir-Blodgett film as the waveguide, certain disadvantages of prior art scanning devices are eliminated.

Langmuir-Blodgett film in an integrated electro-optical scanner

An organic electroluminescent multicolor image display device is disclosed containing an image display array made up of a plurality of light emitting pixels arranged in intersecting files (rows and columns). Each pixel contains a light transmissive first electrode, an electroluminescent medium overlying the first electrode, and an overlying second electrode. The electrodes connect the pixels in an X-Y addressing pattern. The organic electroluminescent medium emits in the blue region of the spectrum. Each pixel is divided into at least two sub-pixels. The electrodes of one set of parallel files is divided into at least two laterally spaced elements each of which joins and forms a part of one sub-pixel of each pixel in the same file. A fluorescent medium capable of absorbing light emitted by the electroluminescent medium and emitting at a longer wavelength is positioned to receive emitted light from the first electrode means. The fluorescent medium is confined to only one of the sub-pixels of each pixel.

Organic electroluminescent multicolor image display device

An optical article is disclosed comprised of an organic layer unit exhibiting a second order polarization susceptibility greater than 10.sup.-9 esu and means for providing an optical input to and an optical output from the layer unit. The organic layer unit exhibits a transmission attenuation of less than 2 dB/cm and is comprised of a Y type Langmuir-Blodgett assembly having superimposed oriented monomolecular layers of first and second polymeric amphiphiles each containing repeating units comprised of a hydrophilic moiety and a lipophilic moiety. Repeating units of one or both of the first and second amphiphiles each contain an organic molecular dipole, and repeating units of one or both of the first and second amphiphiles each contains a branched lipophilic moiety of up to 9 carbon atoms.

Transparent optical article exhibiting high second order polarization

An optical article is disclosed comprised of a support including a portion adjacent one major surface which is transparent to the electromagnetic radiation sought to be propagated, an organic layer unit capable of converting a portion of polarized electromagnetic radiation of a selected wavelength to its second harmonic wavelength, means for optically coupling into said organic layer unit polarized electromagnetic radiation of a selected wavelength in its zero order transverse magnetic mode, and means for receiving from the layer unit a portion of the electromagnetic radiation in the form of a first order transverse magnetic mode. The organic layer unit has a thickness which is at least 70 percent cf the wavelength of the zero order transverse magnetic mode and differs by less than 100 .ANG. from the thickness required for identical propagation constants of the zero and first order transverse magnetic modes. The organic layer unit is comprised of a Y-type Langmuir-Blodgett assembly of amphiphiles forming a first Langmuir Blodgett layer unit containing noncentrosymmetric organic molecular dipoles of a first orientation providing a second order polarization susceptibility to the first layer unit in excess of 10.sup.-9 electrostatic units, and a Y-type Langmuir-Blodgett assembly of amphiphiles forming a second Langmuir-Blodgett layer unit adapted to be coated on the first Langmuir-Blodgett layer unit containing noncentro-symmetric organic molecular dipoles of a second orientation providing a second order polarization susceptibility to the second layer unit in excess of 10.sup.-9 electrostatic units, but of opposite sign to that of the first layer unit.

A photorefractive device is disclosed capable of optically coupling intersecting beams of electromagnetic radiation comprised of first and second electrodes for establishing a potential gradient between first and second spaced locations and, interposed between the electrodes, a photorefractive medium comprised of a homogeneous charge neutral organic photoconductor containing organic noncentrosymmetric molecular dipoles capable of imparting to the photorefractive medium a second order polarization susceptibility of greater than 10.sup.-9 esu, the molecular dipoles each containing an electron donor moiety linked through a conjugated .pi. bonding system to an electron acceptor moiety.

Conversion efficiency second harmonic generator

A fully integrated electro-optic page-scanner comprises an optically transparent waveguide made from an electro-optic polymer, and an electrode structure including a linear array of electrically-addressable, spaced, parallel electrodes for selectively altering the refractive index across pixel-sized portions of the polymeric waveguide. According to the invention, the addressable electrodes are disposed on a photoconductive substrate which facilitates poling of the polymer waveguide to rander it electro-optic in nature. During the poling process, the photoconductive substrate is made electrically conductive by flood illumination, while a uniform electric field is established between the substrate and a transparent electrode which overlies the waveguide layer, opposite the addressable electrodes. Preferably, the photoconductive substrate comprises undoped silicon which enables certain electrode-addressing circuitry to be integrated within the scanner structure.

A fully integrated electro-optic page-scanner comprises an optically-transparent waveguide made from an electro-optic polymer, and a linear array of electrically-addressable, spaced, parallel electrodes for selectively altering the refractive index across pixel-sized portions of the polymeric waveguide. Integrated electro-optical scanner

A photorefractive device is disclosed comprised of a first and second electrodes for establishing a potential gradient between first and second spaced locations and, interposed between the first and second electrodes, intermediate means capable of producing in a readout beam of electromagnetic radiation an image pattern corresponding to that present in a spatially intersecting writing beam of electromagnetic radiation when a potential gradient is applied to the intermediate means by said first and second electrodes. The intermediate means consists of a photorefractive layer capable of internally storing the image pattern of the writing beam created by its interference with an intersecting reference beam of electromagnetic radiation, the photorefractive layer being comprised of a homogeneous organic photoconductor containing organic noncentrosymmetric molecular dipoles capable of imparting to the photorefractive layer a second order polarization susceptibility of greater than 10.sup.-9 esu.
