A pyrimidinone compound of formula (IIIA) or (VA): ##STR1## wherein R.sup.13 is hydrogen, halogen or cyano and R.sup.14 is halo or haloalkyl with the proviso that (a) when R.sup.13 is cyano, R.sup.14 is other than chlorine; (b) R.sup.13 and R.sup.14 are not both halo; (c) when R.sup.13 is halo R.sup.14 is other than monofluoromethyl; and (d) when R.sup.13 is hydrogen R.sup.14 is not halo or a halomethyl group; ##STR2## wherein R.sup.10 is hydrogen or C.sub.1-4 alkyl; R.sup.15 is cyano and R.sup.16 is R.sup.6 is defined in relation to formula (V) or R.sup.15 is hydrogen or halogen other than fluorine and R.sup.16 is pentafluoroethyl or difluoromethyl. These compounds are useful as intermediates in the preparation of insecticidal compounds.

Pyrimidine compounds

Compounds of formula: ##STR1## and stereoisomers thereof, wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2, which are the same or different, are optionally substituted alkyl; W, X, Y and Z, which are the same or different, are hydrogen, halogen, hydroxy, optionally substituted alkyl, optionally substituted cycloalkyl, optionally substituted cycloalkylalkyl, optionally substituted aralkyl, optionally substituted aryloxyalkyl, optionally substituted alkenyl, optionally substituted aryl, optionally substituted alkynyl, optionally substituted amino, optionally substituted arylazo, optionally substituted heteroarylalkyl, optionally substituted heteroaryloxyalkyl, optionally substituted acylamino, nitro, cyano, --OR.sup.3, --SR.sup.3, --CO.sub.2 R.sup.4, --CONR.sup.5 R.sup.6, --COR.sup.7, --CR.sup.8 .dbd.NR.sup.9, --N.dbd.CR.sup.10 R.sup.11, --SOR.sup.12 or --SO.sub.2 R.sup.13, or any two of W, X, Y, and Z, in adjacent positions on the phenyl ring, optionally join to form an optionally substituted fused ring, either aromatic or aliphatic, optionally containing one or more heteroatoms; R.sup.3 is optionally substituted alkyl, or cycloalkyl optionally containing a hetero atom in the cycloalkyl ring, optionally substituted alkenyl, optionally substituted aryl, optionally substituted aralkyl, optionally substituted acyl, or optionally substituted heteroaryl; R.sup.4, R.sup.5, R.sup.6, R.sup.7, R.sup.8, R.sup.10 and R.sup.11, which are the same or different, are hydrogen or optionally substituted alkyl, optionally substituted cycloalkyl, cycloalkylalkyl, optionally substituted alkenyl, optionally substituted alkynyl, optionally substituted aryl, optionally substituted heteroaryl, or optionally substituted aralkyl; and R.sup.9, R.sup.12 and R.sup.13 are optionally substituted aryl or optionally substituted heteroaryl. The compounds are useful in agriculture as fungicides, plant growth regulators and insecticides.

Derivatives of alphaphenylacrylic acid and their use in agriculture

A method of killing or controlling insect, mite or nematode pests which comprises applying to the pest or to the locus thereof an effective amount of a compound of formula (I): ##STR1## in which R.sup.1 is hydrogen or alkyl; R.sup.2 is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, heteroaryl, arylalkyl, heteroarylalkyl, aryloxy, heteroaryloxy, arylalkenyl, heteroarylalkenyl, aryloxyalkyl, heteroaryloxyalkyl, arylalkoxy, heteroarylalkoxy, --CO.sub.2 R.sup.5, alkylCO.sub.2 R.sup.6, monoalkylamino or dialkylamino; R.sup.3 is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, hydroxy, monoalkylamino, dialkylamino, --CO.sub.2 R.sup.4 or nitro; and R.sup.4, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 are hydrogen or alkyl; any of the foregoing aliphatic moieties are optionally substituted with one or more of halogen, hydroxy, alkoxy, or haloalkoxy; any of the foregoing aryl or heteroaryl moieties are optionally substituted with one or more of halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, haloalkyl or haloalkoxy.

Insecticides

Insecticidal compounds of formula (I) ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are independently selected from halogen or nitro; R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are independently selected from hydrogen or halogen; R.sup.5 is hydrogen, halogen or cyano; and R.sup.6 is halogen or haloalkyl; provided that R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are not all fluorine.

An insecticidal compound of formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.3 are independently selected from hydrogen; halogen; nitro; cyano; or alkyl, alkoxy, alkylthio or cycloalkyl any of which can be optionally substituted by halogen; R.sup.2 is hydrogen; halogen; nitro; cyano; alkyl, alkoxy or alkylthio any of which may be optionally substituted with halogen; or S(O).sub.n R.sup.8, where R.sup.8 is alkyl, haloalkyl or cycloalkyl and n is 0, 1 or 2; R.sup.4 is hydrogen; halogen; nitro; cyano; or alkyl, alkoxy or alkythio any of which may be optionally substituted with halogen; R.sup.5 is hydrogen; halogen; nitro; cyano; alkyl, alkoxy alkylthio any of which can be optionally substituted with halogen; or NR.sup.9 R.sup.10 where R.sup.9 and R.sup.10 are independently selected from hydrogen, alkyl or cycloalkyl; R.sup.6 is hydrogen; halogen; nitro; cyano; alkyl, alkoxy or alkylthio any of which can be optionally substituted with halogen; or S(O).sub.n R.sup.8 ; R.sup.7 is hydrogen; halogen; nitro; cyano; alkyl; alkoxy or alkythio any of which is optionally substituted with halogen; S(O).sub.n R.sup.8 ; or NR.sup.9 R.sup.10 ; and Z is oxygen or sulphur.

A method of killing or controlling insect, mite or nematode pests which method comprises applying to the insect or to the locus thereof an effective amount of a compound of the formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen or C.sub.1-4 alkyl; and X, Y and Z are independently selected from hydrogen, halogen, or OR.sup.1 where R.sup.1 is optionally substituted aryl or heteroaryl group. Certain of the compounds are new.
