Polyester polyol comprising an imide moiety and methods of manufacture thereof

A polyurethane foam composition comprising: (a) an isocyanate compound; (b) one or more isocyanate reactive compounds at least one of the isocyanate reactive compounds comprises an aromatic polyester polyol compound comprising an imide moiety wherein the aromatic polyester polyol is the reaction product of: (i) a cyclic anhydride compound; (ii) a phthalic acid based compound, (iii) a primary amine compound, (iv) an aliphatic diol compound; (v) optionally, a high functionality, low molecular weight polyether polyol compound; (vi) optionally, a hydrophobic compound; and wherein the weight ratio of Component (i) to Component (ii) is from 1:24 to 24:1; and wherein the aromatic polyester polyol is liquid at 25° C. and comprises a hydroxy value ranging from about 30 to about 600; and (c) a blowing agent.

Polyurethane foam composition comprising an aromatic polyester polyol compound and products made therefrom

Aromatic polyester polyols with high functionality, moderate viscosity, and high aromatic content suitable as the sole polyol in the production of polyurethane foams without the use of any polyether polyols are disclosed. This unique combination of properties makes them suit for use as the sole polyol in the production of polyurethane foams. With reduction of flame retardants, these foams based on sole aromatic polyol can have E-84 class one fire properties. The aromatic polyester polyols of this invention are characterized as having a functionality of greater than 2.8 while having a moderate viscosity ranging from 4,000-10,000 cps @ 25 C. A typical high functional polyester polyol of the present invention has a hydroxyl number in the range of 320-400, viscosity of 4,000-10,000 cps @ 25 C, functionality of greater than 2.8 and percent phenyl content greater than 14.75.

Methods and compositions for forming polyurethane foam. A method for manufacturing an aromatic polyester polyol comprises heating a glycol, a dicarboxylic acid or ester, functionality enhancing agent, and a natural oil to about 480&#xb0; F. to form a reaction product, allowing the reaction product to cool to about 140&#xb0; F., and adding additional glycol to form an aromatic polyester polyol composition, wherein the total glycol comprises less than about 36 weight percent of the polyol composition. An aromatic polyester polyol composition comprises a glycol, a dicarboxylic acid or ester, functionality enhancing agent, and a natural oil, wherein the total glycol comprises less than about 36 weight percent of the aromatic polyester polyol composition. An aromatic polyester polyol composition comprising a cyclopentane solubility of at least about 25 percent, a hydroxyl number of at least about 150, the natural oil comprising less than about 25 weight percent, and/or the dicarboxylic acid or ester comprising more than about 29 weight percent of the polyol composition.

Methods of making aromatic polyester polyols that are suitable for use with hydrocarbon and hydrofluorocarbon blowing agents. The polyols are made by reacting polyethylene terephthalate, dissolved in a solution comprising a plurality of glycols, with a natural oil. The natural oil reacts into the polyol backbone at a specific temperature. Aromatic polyester polyols that are suitable for use with hydrocarbon and hydrofluorocarbon blowing agents. The polyols are made from polyethylene terephthalate and a natural oil. The polyols exhibit low hydroxyl numbers and low viscosities, and hydrocarbons and hydrofluorocarbons blowing agents are soluble in these polyols. A method for making foam using the polyols of the present invention. The method includes reacting a polyol of the present invention, mixed with other polyol components, with an isocyanate component.

Aromatic polyester polyols made from a natural oil

Two methods for preparing polyester-polyether polyols from polyalkylene terephthalates are disclosed. The first method comprises reacting the polyalkylene terephthalate with a solution of low molecular weight polyols and ethoxylated methyl glucoside at a suitable temperature, generally between about 370.degree. and 450.degree. F., and under vacuum distillation. The second method comprises dissolving the polyalkylene terephthalates in a mixture of low molecular weight polyols at a suitable temperature and under vacuum distillation to form the polyester polyol component. The polyether polyol component is made by reacting ethoxylated methyl glucoside with an alkylene oxide in the presence of a suitable catalyst. The final product is made by blending about 80-95% by weight of the polyester component with about 5-20% by weight of the polyether component.
