A multilayer, unitary gasket including at least one inner layer of expanded PTFE disposed between a first substantially air impermeable outer layer and a second substantially air impermeable outer layer, and a substantially air impermeable region bridging the first and second substantially air impermeable layers. The inventive gasket forms a substantially air impermeable seal when compressed at low stress.

A composite fluoropolymer material contains outer layers consisting essentially of conformable porous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and interior layers consisting essentially of rigid fluoropolymer material which may be a densified expanded PTFE, wherein the composite layers may optionally contain electrically conductive fillers. The composite is bonded together to form a sheet material that is sufficiently conformable to provide good seal between surfaces and is sufficiently rigid to make the material easy to handle and install. The material of the present invention is particularly suitable for use as a gasket where rigidity is needed, customization or modification of gasket shape is desirable, and/or where a wide, even sealing surface is sought.

Rigid sheet polytetrafluoroethylene material

The present invention is an improved gasket for use in a wide variety of sealing applications. The gasket comprises a continuous, form-in-place gasket element, comprising layers of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene, that has significant tensile strength in both the longitudinal and the transverse directions. As such, the gasketing element of the present invention provides all of the operational advantages of PTFE, while being dimensionally stable, resistant to creep relaxation and providing form-in-place dimensions, thus satisfying a wider range of sealing applications than conventional sealing materials.

An improved, chemically resistant gasket is constructed from a composite containing outer layers consisting essentially of conformable expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and interior layers consisting essentially of a densified expanded PTFE, wherein the composite layers may optionally contain electrically conductive fillers. The composite is bonded together to form a sheet material that is sufficiently conformable to provide good seal between surfaces and is sufficiently rigid to make the material easy to handle and install.
