This invention relates to fiber surface treating agnets containing a pyromellitate nucleus which have fungicidal, anti-microbial and anti-static properties, and blends of such agents with other types of surface modifiers.

Fiber surface modifiers

The present invention is directed to a copolymer of a fluoromonomer having the formula R.sub.1 R.sub.2 C.dbd.CR.sub.3 F wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are selected from H and F, and R.sub.3 may be Cl when R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are F; and a vinyl monomer having the formula H.sub.2 C.dbd.CHR.sub.x, wherein R.sub.x is a radical having the formula --O.sub.2 CR.sub.y, wherein R.sub.y is a radical selected from CH.sub.3 and C.sub.2 H.sub.5. The resulting copolymer comprises fluorinated units having the formula (R.sub.1 R.sub.2 C--CR.sub.3 F) wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are selected from H and F, and R.sub.3 may be Cl when R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are F, and corresponding amounts of vinyl units having the formula (H.sub.2 C--CHR.sub.x), wherein R.sub.x is selected from --CH.sub.3 and C.sub.2 H.sub.5. In an alternate and preferred embodiment the copolymer is hydrolyzed so that R.sub.x becomes --OH.

Novel polycarboxy benzene dianhydrides useful as surfactants are disclosed. The novel compounds of this invention are pyromellitate tetraesters wherein two ester moieties characteristically contain fluorinated alkyl groups or saturated hydrocarbon alkyl groups and wherein two ester moieties contain alkylene moieties having a terminal halogen.

This invention relates to novel fluorinated compounds derived from 3,3',4,4'-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride that are useful as surface modifiers for various fibers. The novel compounds contain two fluorinated ester derived from fluorinated alcohols and two esters derived from oxirane compounds.

Pyromellitate diester-diacid chlorides are disclosed that are useful as intermediates in the synthesis of a variety of soil and water repelling compounds. The pyromellitates of this invention characteristically contain two ester moieties wherein said ester moieties contain a fluorinated or saturated hydrocarbon alkyl moiety. The pyromellitates additionally contain two acid chloride moieties which are capable of reacting with various compounds to produce various products useful as surfactants.

Pyromellitate tetraesters are disclosed that are useful as water repellents. The pyromellitates of this invention characteristically contain two ester moieties wherein said ester moieties contain a fluorinated or saturated hydrocarbon alkyl group. Oligomers containing pyromellitic rings, divalent linking groups, pendant fluoroalkoxy or hydrocarbon alkoxy groups and pendant polar groups of various kinds impart soil repellency to fibers that persists after repeated laundering. An exemplary material is prepared by the reaction of pyromellitic difluoroester/diacid chloride with 1,4-butanediol (the linking group) and 3-chloro-1,2-propanediol (the pendant polar group).
