An apparatus for mounting components to a motor vehicle including a frame having a bonding face and a nut coupled to the frame where the nut has a mounting face protruding a distance from the bonding face. The apparatus further includes a plastic body panel having an inner face and an outer face defining a thickness substantially equivalent to the protrusion distance of the nut. The plastic panel further has an aperture extending through its thickness. The nut is disposed in the aperture. The inner face is coupled to the bonding face and the outer face is substantially co-planar to the mounting face. A vehicle component is secured to the frame by a threaded fastener which engages the nut. The vehicle component abuts directly against the mounting face of the nut so that little or no clamping forces are applied to the plastic body panel.

A molded plastic automobile body is bonded to a steel frame by depositing an adhesive layer between the body and frame in a circular pattern, to facilitate thermal expansion of the body relative to the frame. To prevent the body from peeling away from the frame, anti-peeling bolts further connect the body to the frame. To diffuse over a large area the downward force of the bolt heads on the plastic body, thereby reducing scalloping of the plastic body, spring washers having large surface areas are sandwiched between the bolts and the body.

Vehicle door assembly

A door for an automobile having opposed molded plastic sides includes a steel door frame hingedly connected to the body. An outer panel is attached to the door frame, and a unitary injection-molded inner panel is also attached to the door frame to hide from view components such as latching mechanisms and window operators that are disposed between the panels. The inner panel is formed with a depression, and an elastic net covers the depression, to establish a storage compartment.

A headlamp mounting system for an automobile includes respective headlamp housings for holding monofilament headlamps. Also, respective bases are attached to the automobile and each base is pivotably engaged with a respective one of the headlamp housings. An activating shaft extends between the headlamp housings and is connected to each, and an activating rod is connected to a radially protruding ear of the activating shaft. The activating rod is coupled to an operating knob in the passenger compartment, and the knob can be pushed and pulled as desired by an occupant to cause the activating rod to reciprocate and, thus, to rotate the activating shaft and hence pivot the headlamp housings. Thereby, the elevation angle of the headlamp beams is selectively established, with a high angle establishing a high beam orientation and a low angle establishing a low beam orientation. A spool having front and rear ends is pivotably engaged with the activating rod in the passenger compartment. The high beam orientation is established when the front end abuts the automobile and the low beam orientation is established when the rear end abuts the automobile, thereby establishing the limit of travel of the activating rod. The spool can be rotated on the rod as desired to vary the high beam and low beam orientations.

Multidirectional headlamp mount with manually adjustable elevation angle

An automobile has a plastic body bonded to a steel frame and a plastic molded unitary front end pivotably connected to the frame and releasably connectable by means of elastic straps to the body. The single-piece front end establishes the front hood, left and right front fenders, and front fascia of the automobile, thereby minimizing body joints and simplifying assembly. The front end can be pivoted at a pivot point located near the front fascia to a drive position to cover the engine of the automobile. In the drive position, a rear edge of the front end is closely spaced from the body, and the front end can be engaged with the body by means of the elastic straps. Further, the straps can be released from the body and the front end pivoted to a maintenance position, wherein the rear edge of the front end is distanced from the body to permit access to the engine of the automobile.

Unitary one-piece automobile hood, fascia, and front fender assembly

A light-weight vehicle door including, in one form, outer and inner plastic panels bonded together with the inner panel molded with upright forward, aft and intermediate frame portions. The forward and aft frame portions providing opposed side walls formed with L-section mirror image window panel supporting rebates including co-planar fore and aft reveal flanges and parallel opposed fence flanges. An inverted U-shaped trim member having vertically extending leg sections with each leg section received in an associated rebate and defining, with a respective fence flange, opposed guide grooves slidably supporting a window panel. A manual window panel regulating mechanism mounted on a lower edge of the window panel having a regulator adapted for cooperative locking engagement with an intermediate frame portion holding the window panel in a partially or fully raised position.

A lift type tailgate on a passenger van type vehicle body is operated by an electric motor powered actuator with an electronic control circuit utilizing a microprocessor operating under program control to respond to user-initiated opening and closing signals to move the tailgate in the selected direction. In the control circuit, feedback information to the microprocessor indicative of tailgate position is provided by a potentiometer coupled with the actuator motor and the microprocessor is programmed to operate with this information to stop the tailgate at a wide open position, a partially closed position and a fully closed position. Obstruction detection is performed by the microprocessor using an obstruction detection circuit and additionally by monitoring the position signal input from the potentiometer to stop the tailgate on encountering an obstacle. Activation of a tailgate latching mechanism is performed under the control of the microprocessor using a solenoid drive circuit and warning or alerting sounds indicating tailgate closure operation including tailgate stoppage at the partially closed position are provided in accordance with audio data received from the microprocessor.

A passenger van tailgate hinged for swinging movement about a horizontal axis at its upper edge is forced upward to open by a pair of spring devices under the control of a powered actuator operating through cables. The actuator is mounted on the tailgate and includes an electric motor drivingly connected by a worm shaft and worm gear and additional reduction gearing to a pulley on which the cables are wound. The cables are secured at one end to the vehicle structure, extend along side the respective spring devices, and are wound at their other end in the same direction on the pulley. The tailgate is opened by operating the actuator motor to unwind the cables and allow the spring devices to open the tailgate at a rate determined by the speed of the motor. The tailgate is closed by operating the actuator motor in reverse to rewind the cables and compress the spring devices. A clutch maintains a drive connection between the worm gear and pulley to effect normal tailgate operation and is adapted to slip to allow manually applied force on the tailgate to operate same when the motor is not operating. There is also provision for shutting the actuator motor off when the tailgate encounters an obstacle during closure.

Vehicle body with powered lift type tailgate

A tailgate is hinged to a passenger van type vehicle body above a substantially vertical rear access opening for swinging movement about a horizontal hinge axis. The tailgate is counterbalanced through its range of movement by spring devices and is opened and closed by a powered actuator mounted on a rear vehicle body pillar. The actuator includes a reversible electric motor driving a worm shaft that drives a worm gear to pivot a crankarm about an axis parallel to the hinge axis. A roller mounted on the crankarm is received in a guide channel that is fixed to the tailgate and extends at right angles to the hinge axis with the pivoting movement of the crankarm thereby translated into swinging tailgate opening and closing movement. The motor is connected with torque sensing circuitry that detects an excessive motor torque demand when the tailgate encounters an obstacle and stops the motor. A normally engaged clutch maintains drive connection between the worm gear and the crankarm to effect normal tailgate opening and closing by the motor and slips to allow manually applied force on the tailgate to open and close same when the motor is not operating.
