An internal combustion engine including an engine block including a cylinder head defining a combustion chamber and having therein an opening communicating with the combustion chamber, and a combined fuel injection pump and nozzle including a housing fixed to the cylinder head and defining a high reluctance gap and a low pressure fuel chamber having an axis, a tubular member extending in the housing into the low pressure fuel chamber in coaxial relation to the axis, having therein an axial bore communicating with the low pressure fuel chamber, and at least partially defining a high pressure fuel chamber, and a nozzle assembly fixed to the housing, extending into the opening, communicating with the combustion chamber and with the axial bore, and including a valve member moveable to an open position in response to a fuel pressure in the high pressure fuel chamber above a predetermined level.

An outboard motor comprising a propulsion unit adapted to be mounted on a boat for pivotal movement relative thereto about a generally horizontal axis, the propulsion unit including a propeller shaft, and an engine drivingly connected to the propeller shaft, and the outboard motor further comprising structure for pivoting the propulsion unit about the generally horizontal axis, the pivoting structure being adapted to be mounted outside the boat, and the pivoting structure comprising a housing having an interior and an exterior, an electric motor in the interior, and a first quick-disconnect connector portion which is electrically connected to the motor and which is accessible from the exterior of the housing for selective mating with another quick-disconnect connector portion.

A shock absorber adapted for use with the swivel bracket assembly of an outboard motor or the like, is disclosed, which swivel bracket assembly permits rotation of the motor to clear an underwater object if and when a boat strikes such an object. The shock absorber has a two stage operation in that it permits a swivel bracket assembly to rotate and provides a counterforce that is initially lower, and after some degree of rotation, preferably sufficient to have the drive shaft housing clear the object, provides a higher counterforce to continued rotation.

An outboard motor comprising a transom bracket which is adapted to be mounted on the transom of a boat and which includes first and second generally horizontally spaced apart portions, a tilt tube which extends through the transom bracket portions and along a generally horizontal tilt axis and which includes a first end portion extending outwardly of the first transom bracket portion and a second end portion extending outwardly of the second transom bracket portion, a swivel bracket mounted on the tilt tube for pivotal movement relative to the transom bracket about the tilt axis, a propulsion unit mounted on the swivel bracket for common movement therewith about the tilt axis and for pivotal movement relative thereto about a generally vertical steering axis, the propulsion unit including a propeller shaft adapted to support a propeller, and a steering arm adapted to be connected to a remote steering system, and structure on both of the tilt tube end portions for permitting the remote steering system to be alternatively connected to the first end portion or to the second end portion.
