Presented is a telephone calling party announcement system which stores telephone numbers and associated voice messages provided by a user. When an incoming telephone call occurs, and a telephone number of a calling party matches a stored telephone number, an associated stored voice message is played back. Calling party information is provided by Caller ID information transmitted between a first and a second ring signal. If a stored telephone number matches the telephone number portion of the Caller ID information, a stored voice message associated with the telephone number is played back between (or in place of) subsequent ring signals. The stored voice message is typically the name of the calling party, and in this case the name of the calling party is announced between ring signals. A first embodiment includes a voice message unit which receives, stores, and plays back voice messages provided by the user. A caller ID decoder decodes the Caller ID information and provides the decoded Caller ID information to a control unit. The control unit compares the telephone number portion of the decoded Caller ID information to telephone numbers stored in a control memory unit. If a match is found, the control unit asserts a playback control signal which causes the voice message unit to play back an associated stored voice message. In a second embodiment, a digital signal processor (DSP) performs the many of the functions of the voice message unit and the caller ID decoder of the first embodiment.

Telephone calling party announcement system and method

A monolithic integrated circuit for providing enhanced audio performance in personal computers. The monolithic circuit includes a wavetable synthesizer; a full function stereo coding and decoding circuit including analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion; data compression, and mixing and muxing of analog signals; a local memory control module for interfacing with external memory; a game-MIDI port module; a system bus interface; and a control module for compatibility and circuit control functions.

Monolithic PC audio circuit

A communications device is presented which is able to detect a ring signal without the need for dedicated ring signal detection circuitry. The communications device includes a hookswitch coupled between a telephone line and a communications circuit. In an open mode of the hookswitch, an electrical resistance of at least 25 megohms exists between two switch terminals of the hookswitch, and the communications circuit is essentially disconnected from the telephone line at d.c. A capacitor positioned between the switch terminals of the hookswitch couples a.c. signals from the telephone line to the communications circuit when the hookswitch is in the open mode. A DSP of the communications circuit performs ring signal detection when the hookswitch is in the open mode using electrical power provided by a power supply. The input impedance of the communications circuit is substantially equivalent to a series combination of an inductance and a resistance. The series combination of the capacitor and the equivalent inductance and resistance of the input impedance of the communications circuit effectively forms an R-L-C highpass filter. The value of the capacitor is operably chosen such that: (i) the amplitudes of 20 Hz ring signals are reduced to below a 1.0 Vp-p maximum allowable input voltage range of common analog-to-digital converters, and (ii) the amplitudes of a.c. signals at Caller ID frequency shift keying frequencies of 1,200 Hz and 2,200 Hz are not increased or attenuated to a degree which would impair Caller ID circuit operation.

Communications device with improved ring signal detection

A digital wavetable audio synthesizer is described. The synthesizer can generate up to 32 high-quality audio digital signals or voices, including delay-based effects, at either a 44.1 KHz sample rate or at sample rates compatible with a prior art wavetable synthesizer. The synthesizer includes an address generator which has several modes of addressing wavetable data. The address generator's addressing rate controls the pitch of the synthesizer's output signal. The synthesizer performs a 10-bit interpolation, using the wavetable data addressed by the address generator, to interpolate additional data samples. When the address generator loops through a block of data, the signal path interpolates between the data at the end and start addresses of the block of data to prevent discontinuities in the generated signal. A synthesizer volume generator, which has several modes of controlling the volume, adds envelope, right offset, left offset, and effects volume to the data. The data can be placed in one of sixteen fixed stereo pan positions, or left and right offsets can be programmed to place the data anywhere in the stereo field. The left and right offset values can also be programmed to control the overall volume. Zipper noise is prevented by controlling the volume increment. A synthesizer LFO generator can add LFO variation to: (i) the wavetable data addressing rate, for creating a vibrato effect; and (ii) a voice's volume, for creating a tremolo effect. Generated data to be output from the synthesizer is stored in left and right accumulators. However, when creating delay-based effects, data is stored in one of several effects accumulators. This data is then written to a wavetable. The difference between the wavetable write and read addresses for this data provides a delay for echo and reverb effects. LFO variations added to the read address create chorus and flange effects. The volume of the delay-based effects data can be attenuated to provide volume decay for an echo effect.
