A method of killing or controlling unwanted plants by applying to the plant on to a locus thereof an effective amount of a compound of formula (I) ##STR1## or a salt thereof: wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are independently selected from hydrogen, hydroxy, alkyl, alkoxy, alkylcarbonyl, halogen, cyans, nitro, haloalkyl and haloalkoxy; R.sup.6 is hydrogen, hydroxy, amino, lower alkyl, halogen, cyano, haloalkyl, nitro, aryl, or a group C(O).sub.m R.sup.10, wherein R.sup.10 is hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl or phenyl any of which may be optionally substituted and m is 1 or 2; R.sup.7 is hydrogen, lower alkyl, haloalkyl, C(O).sub.m R.sup.10 or halogen; or R.sup.6 and R.sup.7 together form an optionally substituted alkylene chain of 2 or 3 carbon atoms; R.sup.8 is hydrogen, lower alkyl or halogen or the group R.sup.7 or R.sup.8 together form an oxo group; and the group CZR.sup.9 is carboxy or an ester thereof, or R.sup.9 is a group SR.sup.10 or NR.sup.11 R.sup.12 wherein R.sup.11 is hydrogen or alkyl and R.sup.12 is hydrogen, alkyl, S(O).sub.n R.sup.10 wherein n is 0, 1 or 2; or R.sup.9 is a group NR.sup.11 NR.sup.13 R.sup.14 wherein R.sup.11, R.sup.13 and R.sup.14 are independently selected from hydrogen or alkyl; or R.sup.9 is a group --N.sup..sym. R.sup.11 NR.sup.13 R.sup.14 R.sup.20 x.sup..crclbar. wherein R.sup.11, R.sup.13, R.sup.14 and R.sup.20 are each hydrogen or alkyl, and x.sup.- is an agricultrually acceptable anion, and Z is oxygen or sulphur. Herbicidal compositions containing compounds of formula (I) are also claimed together with certain novel sub groups of compounds of formula (I) and processes for their preparation.

Herbicidal compositions

The invention relates to amide derivatives which are histamine H-2 antagonists and which inhibit gastric acid secretion. According to the invention there is provided a guanidine derivative of the formula I: ##STR1## in which R.sup.1 is a hydrogen or 1-10C alkyl, 3-8C cycloalkyl, 4-14C cycloalkyl, 3-6C alkenyl, 3-6C alkynyl, 1-6C alkanoyl, 6-10C aryl, 7-11C aralkyl or 7-11C aroyl, the aryl, aralkyl and aroyl radical being optionally substituted; ring X is a heterocyclic ring as defined in the specification; A is phenylene or 5-7C cycloalkylene, or a 1-8C alkylene into which is optionally inserted one or two groups; D is O or S; and R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are hydrogen or a variety of radicals described in the specification: and the pharmaceutically-acceptable acid-addition salts thereof. Manufacturing processes and pharmaceutical compositions are also described.

Guanidine compounds useful as histamine H2-antagonists

The invention relates to guanidine derivatives which are histamine H-2 antagonists and which inhibit gastric acid secretion. According to the invention there is provided a guanidine derivative of the formula I: ##STR1## in which R.sup.1 and R.sup.2, same or different, are hydrogen or 1-10C alkyl, 3-8C cycloalkyl or 4-15C cycloalkylalkyl, each alkyl, cycloalkyl or cycloalkylalkyl optionally carrying one or more F, Cl or Br atoms, provided that one of R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 is halogen substituted, or R.sup.2 is hydrogen and R.sup.1 is R.sup.5 --E--W in which W is 2-6C alkylene optionally substituted by 1 or 2 1-4C alkyls, E is O,S or NR.sup.6 in which R.sup.6 is H or 1-6C alkyl, R.sup.5 is H or 1-6C alkyl optionally substituted by 1 or 2 1-4C alkyls, or R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 are joined to form a pyrrolidine, piperidine, morpholine, piperazine or N-methylpiperazine ring; ring X is a heterocyclic ring as defined in the specification; A is phenylene or 5-7C cycloalkylene, or a 1-8C alkylene into which is optionally inserted one or two groups; D is O or S; and R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are hydrogen or a variety of radicals described in the specification: and the pharmaceutically-acceptable acid-addition salts thereof. The invention relates to carbonyl derivatives which are histamine H-2 antagonists and which inhibit gastric acid secretion.
