A vehicle system includes a fuel separation system, a combustion engine, and a computer control system. The fuel separation system includes one or more fuel separation units, the vehicle system is configured to recover from the fuel separation system and maintain vapor fuel fractions as vapor throughout the vehicle system, and the combustion engine is configured to receive a vapor fuel feed and a liquid fuel feed. A method for operating the vehicle system includes separating a vehicle fuel with a fuel separation system into a plurality of fuel fractions, recovering and maintaining the vapor fuel fractions as vapor throughout the vehicle system, producing a vapor fuel feed and a liquid fuel feed, and introducing at least one of the vapor fuel feed and the liquid fuel feed to a combustion engine.

Vehicle system with fuel separation system and method of using same

An internal combustion engine includes a cylinder block that defines a cylinder and a cylinder head mounted to the cylinder block. A reciprocating piston is arranged inside the cylinder for compressing an air and fuel mixture at a geometric compression ratio of at least 10:1. A crankshaft is arranged in the cylinder block and rotated by the piston. An intake valve is operatively connected to the cylinder head and controls delivery of air to the cylinder for combustion therein. A mechanism provides a constant peak lift of the intake valve over an angle of rotation of the crankshaft that is at least 5 degrees, i.e., an extended dwell at peak lift. A multi-stage boosting system having first and second gas compressors is selectively controlled to pressurize air that is received from the ambient for delivery to the cylinder. A vehicle having such an engine is also disclosed.

Elevated compression ratio internal combustion engine with multi-stage boosting

A continuously variable transmission includes a first pulley, a second pulley, and an endless rotatable device operatively interconnecting the first and second pulleys. The endless rotatable device includes a device body and a plurality of device teeth protruding from the device body. Each of the first and second pulleys includes a first sheave, a second sheave, and a pulley axle operatively coupled between the first sheave and the second sheave. The pulley axle defines a pulley center. The first sheave is movable relative to the second sheave along the pulley axle. Each of the first and second sheaves includes a sheave body and a plurality of sheave teeth protruding from the sheave body. The sheave teeth are annularly arranged around the pulley center. The sheave teeth are shaped to mate with the device teeth.

A method to operate an internal combustion engine having a fuel delivery system and a heat exchanger located to affect a fuel temperature within the fuel delivery system includes monitoring a desired heat transfer between a flow through the heat exchanger and fuel within the fuel delivery system, determining a required flow through the heat exchanger based upon the desired heat transfer, and controlling a flow control device for the heat exchanger based upon the determined required flow.

Method for improving engine performance using a temperature managed fuel system

A cylinder deactivation system comprises a fuel injection module and a cold start control module. The fuel injection module injects a desired amount of fuel into a cylinder of an engine during engine cranking. The cold start control module maintains an intake valve and an exhaust valve associated with the cylinder in respective closed positions while the desired amount of fuel is injected when at least one of an air temperature and a coolant temperature is less than a predetermined cold start temperature.

Operation of a spark ignition, direct injection engine having an aftertreatment system including an oxidation catalyst and a selective catalyst reduction device is described. The method includes controlling to a stoichiometric air/fuel ratio and retarding spark ignition timing. Engine fueling is then controlled to a lean air/fuel ratio and spark is retarded. The engine is then operated to generate ammonia reductant. Engine operation then comprises operating at a preferred air/fuel ratio and controlling spark ignition timing to a preferred timing.

An internal combustion engine includes a crankshaft and first and second cam actuated intake valves. A method for operating the engine includes providing a first intake cam configured to actuate the first cam actuated intake valve, and providing a second intake cam configured to actuate the second cam actuated intake valve. The second intake cam is phase adjustable relative to the crankshaft independently of the phase of the first intake cam relative to the crankshaft. A controller is provided and configured to selectively retard the phase of the second intake cam to effect later closing of the second cam actuated intake valve sufficiently to reduce the effective compression ratio of the engine. Additionally, the first intake cam may be phase adjustable relative to the crankshaft independently of the phase of the second intake cam relative to the crankshaft and the controller may additionally be configured to selectively advance the phase of the first intake cam to effect earlier opening of the first cam actuated intake valve sufficiently to increase internal exhaust gas recirculation.
