A method for deep-packet inspection of packets flowing through an end unit in a point-to-multipoint network. The method comprises classifying packet flows through the end unit using their flow-identification (ID) to determine which of the packet flows should be deep-packet inspected, wherein the packet flows include incoming packets received from a central unit and outgoing packets sent to the central unit of the point-to-multipoint network; duplicating packets determined to be deep-packet inspected; saving all duplicated packets in a memory; upon collection of a predefined number of duplicated packets belonging to a certain flow-ID, performing deep-packet processing based on at least one deep-packet inspection application; and saving the deep-packet processing results in the memory.

Method and system for performing distributed deep-packet inspection

A method for information transfer allowing for native transfer of voice, data, and any other digital service information over a passive optical network, comprising; the LT transmitting downstream in serially ordered frames broadcast to all of the NT's at a fixed interval; the NT's transmitting upstream in serially ordered frames, said frames being divided into serially ordered time slots, at most one NT transmitting information for at most one service type in each slot; the LT and the NT's exchanging management information, and the LT and the NT's natively transporting service information to each other in both the upstream and downstream directions, according to said management information exchanged between the LT and the NT's.

An apparatus automatically maintains bi-directional communication between an optical network unit (ONU) and a central office (CO) in a passive optical network (PON) when the CO changes from a first PON mode to a second PON mode. The apparatus senses a PON mode relating to downstream data flow from the CO to the ONU; and upon detecting a change in the PON mode from the first PON mode to the second PON mode, synchronizes the ONU to operate according to the downstream and upstream configurations of the second PON mode.

Method and apparatus for automatically upgrading passive optical networks (PONs)

An upstream bandwidth allocation scheduler is provided for use within a Line Termination (LT) unit in a point to multi-point data communications network in order to service multiple Network Termination (NT) units. The scheduler first allocates bandwidth among the several categories of data handled by the network (e.g., voice, IP, and ATM data), and then allocates bandwidth among the several users for each category within the network. A function &#x192; is defined, as part of a 'min-max weighted fairness' scheme, in order to allocate surplus bandwidth among both the categories and users of the network. The scheduler of the present invention, while allocating upstream bandwidth, also supports various quality of service (QoS) categories to subscribers of the network.
